Some controllers immerse you seamlessly in the game but not these.

Developing video games is tough but for all the work that goes into graphics, sound, gameplay and programming, the controller is one’s main gateway to appreciating it all. Even the greatest games can be mired by terrible controllers. So of course, we’re going to be taking a look at 15 of the most horrendous controllers of all time and what made them so uniquely awful.

Xbox “Duke”

For the record: original Xbox controllers were not Frisbees. After all, throwing a Frisbee at someone wouldn’t knock them out cold like “The Duke”, such was the weight and thickness that the OG Xbox controller possessed. If nothing else, it was solid and suited incredibly large hands. And really, there was nothing else. At least Microsoft redesigned the controller to be smaller and more comfortable down the line.

There are some things we look at and immediately recognize as weird experiments doomed to fail, or overpriced products with no real value, or even shoddy implementations of admittedly impressive ideas. Unfortunately, there’s an abundance of those things in the video games industry, which has seen a long, long list of such products enter the market across the years. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at 14 such products.

CTA DIGITAL 6-IN-1 SPORTS PACK

The early 2010s saw Sony and PlayStation buying into the whole motion gaming fad, thanks to the success of the Wii. With the advent of the Move controller, then, came some pretty weird accessories as well. Among these were CTA Packs, which were essentially attachments for your move controller to… to give them the shape of whatever equipment you were holding in the motion controlled sports games you were playing. We all like to be immersed in our games, but perhaps this is taking it a bit too far. You could always just tape your Move controller to your table tennis bat and save yourself some money.
