Fighting games aren’t for the weak of heart. Yes, you could hop into a game like Mortal Kombat, Dragon Ball FighterZ or Street Fighter 5 and get by on some basic inputs. But properly mastering all the different combos and set-ups takes time. Then you have those combos which exist for no other reason than to destroy your motivation. Let’s take a look at 9 of them here.

Leona Trial 10 – The King of Fighters 13

The Trials in The King of Fighters 13 represent a fine line between testing your skill and outright destroying your hand. Leona Heidern’s Trial 10 is a good example. It consists of 16 hits with the need to transition from a Moon Slasher to a Baltic Launcher by canceling out of the latter not once, not twice but three times in a row. Then you have to execute and cancel out of a Grand Saber run, perform the Moon Slasher to Baltic Launcher inputs again, execute a V-Slasher – an in-air Desperation Move that requires one directional quarter circle followed by a half-circle and either Low or High Punch – before ending with a Leona Blade Neomax, which is another quarter circle followed a half-circle into a Low or High Punch. Got all that? Naturally, you need to be frame perfect, especially with the cancels, to pull it off properly.

Certain locations in video games are obviously based on the real world. But what about the not so obvious ones? Take a look at 11 of them here.

The amount of work that goes into creating video game worlds can’t be overstated and as such, many of them take inspiration from real-world locations. This is done rather obviously in games like Grand Theft Auto 5, L.A. Noire, Sleeping Dogs, and many more. However, some titles are a little less obvious about their inspirations. Let’s take a look at 11 video game locations that fit into that category.

Parliament Of Serbia in Belgrade – Half-Life 2

City 17’s European-inspired architecture and aesthetics are fairly easy to recognize, though the Overwatch Nexus is perhaps the closest to being based on an actual building. As the main building for the Overwatch forces, the Nexus was formerly a political building before the Combine invaded. It turns out that it’s actually inspired by the Parliament of Serbia in Belgrade. The similarities between the two buildings, from their general structure to the opening archway are noteworthy, though the signature dome isn’t as defined on the Nexus. Though it’s not outright confirmed in-game, browsing through the texture files reveals the word “parliament” which further hints at the inspiration.

Castlevania Resurrection was announced at E3 1999. A build was shown to press and VIPs behind closed doors. It was quietly canceled less than a year later, and the world mostly forgot about it. The game was said to have been around 25% complete when it was canceled, but about the only proof that the game ever existed, aside from a demo pretty much nobody saw, is an old preview article from IGN and assorted magazine pieces.

Until now, that is. After more than 22 years, Colby Laurent, the owner of the Sega Dreamcast Info Preservation Games website, got his hands on a copy at auction and released a ROM image that can be played on both Dreamcast emulators and the original hardware.

The game features five levels (though one is only accessible via emulation) and lets players control Sofia Belmont, the first member of the legendary vampire hunting family. While the levels would likely have been connected in-game, this is an incomplete build. Players can move through the levels using the debug menu, which is accessed by pressing start.

Because the build is so early in development, large sections of it don’t work. Sonia’s roll hasn’t been properly implemented, the game’s lock on system doesn’t work, and there are a number of other bugs and several crashes.

Castlevania Resurrection is the latest of several unreleased games that have leaked recently. In February, a nearly complete build of the canceled GoldenEye 007 remaster that was in development at Rare leaked. That leak was followed by a fully playable leak of a prototype of Rare’s canceled Dinosaur Planet, which would later become Star Fox Adventures.

Some controllers immerse you seamlessly in the game but not these.

Developing video games is tough but for all the work that goes into graphics, sound, gameplay and programming, the controller is one’s main gateway to appreciating it all. Even the greatest games can be mired by terrible controllers. So of course, we’re going to be taking a look at 15 of the most horrendous controllers of all time and what made them so uniquely awful.

Xbox “Duke”

For the record: original Xbox controllers were not Frisbees. After all, throwing a Frisbee at someone wouldn’t knock them out cold like “The Duke”, such was the weight and thickness that the OG Xbox controller possessed. If nothing else, it was solid and suited incredibly large hands. And really, there was nothing else. At least Microsoft redesigned the controller to be smaller and more comfortable down the line.

RAGE 2’s marketing has put a lot of emphasis on the game’s colorful look, crazy variety of weapons, and its over-the-top, bizarre humor. This trailer, in particular, highlights that, but so does the fact that you can unlock the old NBA Jam announcer to dictate the action also tips you off to the type of offbeat attitude the game wants to convey. In keeping with that vein, it also seems Bethesda has decided to give away a special RAGE 2-themed Sega Dreamcast, able to play the game.

You read that right. The contest runs from today, May 1st, to May 3rd, and they are giving away a Dreamcast, the infamous console whose failure was a leading factor to Sega going from a hardware producer to a third party software publisher. The system is apparently modded in some way to where it can actually play the game. You can see the Twitter account below for contest details and proof that the system plays RAGE 2. It’s not clear if the system can play other Dreamcast titles or if this is more of a Dreamcast shell over unrelated hardware. Most likely the latter, but honestly, who the hell knows with a promotion like this. To enter, all you need to do is follow the official Twitter on a public account and retweet the below tweet.

RAGE 2 will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 14th. This will be the only Dreamcast that the game will be released on.

Let’s make this happen, guys!

Sega is a company that has often treated its venerated and storied past with shocking, cavalier casualness—but even when it does attempt to tap into nostalgia, it mostly does so by releasing, and re-releasing, Genesis/Mega Drive games from its 16-bit heyday. In a way, it makes sense—most people know Sega for that, after all. But at this point, Genesis games have been released on practically every platform known to mankind, and other, equally great (if not better) Sega games released on platforms like Saturn and Dreamcast have languished in obscurity.

However, with Sega AGES, a line of classic games being re-released for the Nintendo Switch, that might change. While, for now, the collection will focus on Genesis games (again), it might expand to include Saturn and Dreamcast games in the feature. Speaking about the future of the initiative, the senior director of the project said (translation via ResetEra) that it could be expanded to include Saturn and Dreamcast games in the future. Not only that, but Sega’s Sam Mullen from the localization team chipped in on ResetEra to suggest that this might in fact happen—but he did note that fans should express their interest in that happening on social media like Twitter.

Hoopefully, it does happen. Some of Sega’s best games ever made were for Saturn and Dreamcast (including many that, sadly, barely or never got any release in the west). I’d love for the chance to be able to play them on the Switch.

The remaster of the classic Genesis game will be out next week.

Pier Solar HD, a homebrew RPG, has finally received an official release date. The game is slated to release this September 30th on PS4, PS3, PC (via steam) and Ouya. The Wii U, Xbox One and, get this, Sega Dreamcast versions of the game haven’t been rated yet and are pending release.

“Development is completed” though, so there is that. The The Wii U, Xbox One and (sigh) Sega Dreamcast builds of the game are set to be rated next month, so if you’ve been keeping your ear to the ground and are excited for Pier Solar, which was also released on Sega Genesis in 2010, and I wish I was making that up, you can rest assured that it’s coming soon.

If Pier Solar sounds familiar, it’s because it was originally developed for the Sega Genesis and released in 2010 (seriously). It’s received some fairly positive reviews so it will be interesting to see how the HD release pans out.
