Some bosses just won't die when you want them to.

We’ve covered all kinds of bosses lately. Disgusting bosses, anticlimactic bosses, bosses that keep coming back for more, you get the drift. However, there’s a special kind of boss that warrants attention for their inability to die, at least legitimately and in certain parts of certain games. So while they may be invulnerable in one fight, you can probably best them later. For other situations though, let’s look at 15 video game bosses that you can’t kill, no matter what. Warning: The word “impossible” and variations of it are repeated a lot.

Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.

Fortune (1st Battle) – Metal Gear Solid 2

It’s not like “Lady Luck” Fortune is the toughest boss to kill in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. She possesses a portable rail gun that can rip you apart easily but damaging her initially is impossible because bullets simply don’t hit her. Chalk this up to an electromagnetic device on her person that can deflect bullets and even disable nearby explosives. Whatever the case may be, just don’t waste your bullets in the early going.

"We'll just wait here, I guess. He's gotta run out of minions eventually."

Commanders, deities, demons – no matter which game you play, a boss fight is seemingly inevitable. That’s the proper thrill of it though. A boss fight is meant to be the culmination of your hero’s journey, an epic encounter to cap off the experience. Games like Shadow of the Colossus handle this trope deftly by featuring nothing but bosses and building to a dramatic climax.

However, there are some boss fights which rely on tough nuts and cookies to crack as often as they do mobs that endlessly spawn. Are they annoying? That depends on you but there are a good number of battles on here that could be irksome if you didn’t dispose of those endless minions during the fight.

Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.

Skolas (pre-nerf) – Destiny: House of Wolves

Before he was nerfed, Skolas was one of the single most frustrating bosses to face in Destiny. Not only was a level higher, thus increasing the damage he dealt while decreasing your own damage, but he had a near endless supply of minions around him at a time. The mechanics of the fight were also extremely stressful with mines, the devouring essence and, oh yeah, Solar Burn and Arc Burn modifiers. A patch would make Skolas much more manageable along with having enemies appear at fixed intervals.

"I cannot even begin to stress out just how horrible this idea is! "

Yesterday we had reported why Valve engineer Drew Bliss prefers Linux over Windows 8. Today we have another industry personality defending Gabe Newell’s comments about Windows 8, when he said that ‘Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space‘.

Now Alen Ladavac from CroTeam, developers of Serious Sam 3, has defended Gabe Newell’s comments (via ubuntuvibes). He believes that Gabe did not overreact when he passed on his feedback about Windows 8.

“Gabe Newel did not overreact. What you don’t see here is that, under the hood, the new tiled UI is a means for Microsoft to lock Windows applications into a walled garden, much like the one on iOS. There is this “small detail” that Microsoft is not advertising anywhere, but you can find it dug deep in the developer documentation,” he posted on Steam’s forums.

He too criticized Windows 8 where no one can release an application unless they are routed through the Windows Store. He calls it a horrible idea.

“One cannot release a tiled UI application by any other means, but only through Windows Store!”

“I cannot even begin to stress out just how horrible this idea is! There is no side-loading, except for corporate use inside one company, and that works only on the enterprise edition of Windows 8. Do we all understand what that means? You cannot download an application from the Internet and run it on your computer. You have to get it from Microsoft’s store. Even if it is a free app!”

He also believes that the removal of the Start menu is way to force users to get used to the titled UI.

“Now, while in current state Windows 8 do look like they support plain desktop apps seamlessly, the removal of start menu and use of “charms” even on the desktop looks like a pretty blunt attempt to force users to “get used” to the tiled UI. It would be fine by me if it wasn’t for the aforementioned certification issue.”

What do you guys think about the developer’s stance against Windows 8? Do you guys think it will affect the future of PC gaming? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

DLC will ship with three campaign missions and new weapons.

Serious Sam started out as a killer tribute to Doom. and it succeeded on so many levels. Developers, forever caught in the loop of making meaningful first person shooters, finally rediscovered fun thanks to Croteam. Now they’re back (again) with the upcoming Serious Sam 3 DLC, titled “Jewel of the Nile”, published by Developer Digital.

From the press release: “Our hero, Sam “Serious” Stone heads to the mysterious Temple of Isis on the island of Philae where a monstrous temple guardian lies in wait. Set in the midst of the events in Serious Sam 3: BFE, Sam and his team will battle through three new campaign missions against the unrelenting hordes of Mental’s forces.”

The DLC shall see release on October 16th for $9.99 and will include three supposedly “massive” campaign missions with bosses, new baddies and plenty of new ways to blow them away. Of course, co-op support is also provided. Check it out on Steam.
