These diamonds-in-the-rough didn't get anywhere near the recognition they deserved.

The PS3 might be regarded by many as the dark horse of the PlayStation console family, but by the end of its lifecycle, the console had managed to accumulate an impressive library of excellent games nonetheless. Of course, a byproduct of that is that its library also had a fair few games that ended up flying under the radar for a great many players, even if they were deserving of far greater attention and recognition. Here, we’re going to talk about a few such PS3 titles that didn’t grab the masses the way they should have.

ENSLAVED: ODYSSEY TO THE WEST

Ever the masters of narrative-driven single-player experiences, back in 2010, Ninja Theory delivered Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, a game that many consider one of the studio’s best works ever to this day. Sadly, the game ended up a commercial failure. Though acclaimed by many for its storytelling, characters, performances, and its take on the classic Chinese tale of Journey to the West, for whatever reason, it failed to attract a sizeable audience.

These shooters may not be the best the genre has to offer, but they definitely deserve more recognition than they get.

Given the popularity of the third-person shooter genre, those on the lookout for another one to play never have any shortage of options to pick from, and though there’s obviously every case to be made for what are regarded as the genre’s best games, there are also plenty of other, less popular third-person shooters out there that perhaps deserve more recognition than they deserve. Here, we’re going to talk about fifteen such third-person shooters that might not be the best of the best the genre has to offer, but do still stand out as some of its more overlooked and underrated offerings.

SHADOWS OF THE DAMNED

The textbook example of a diamond in the rough, Shadows of the Damned is the perfect game to kick this feature off with. Grasshopper Manufacture’s 2011 cult classic is a game that has garnered an increasingly sizeable fan following over the years, and it’s easy to see why, whether that’s because of its stylish action, its sense of humour, or the abundance of character and personality that it’s overflowing with. Hopefully, its upcoming remaster will bring a much larger audience to the game.

Some of the most unfair failures in this medium's history.

Like with any other entertainment medium, video game sales aren’t always reflective of their quality. Often, we see great games coming out to widespread praise from critics and audiences alike that somehow manage to not sell very well. Sadly, it’s something that happens quite a lot, and in this feature, we’ll be taking a look at fifteen such games.

DEUS EX: MANKIND DIVIDED

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided ruffled some feathers with its abrupt ending, but no one could doubt that it was a great game. It built on the complex systemic moment-to-moment action from Human Revolution, offering players diverse choices in how they wanted to tackle any given objective, and all in all, was more than just a solid package. Sadly, at launch, the game’s sells fell below expectations, and Square Enix ended up putting the franchise on ice. Both Square Enix and Eidos Montreal have said on multiple occasions that the Deus Ex series isn’t done yet, so let’s just hope a sequel isn’t too far away (but it most likely is).

Will these characters be in NetherRealm's latest? Probably not. Should they be? You know it.

NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat 11 is out in April and already looks to be a bloody good time. Given the developer’s reputation with guest characters, we just have to wonder – who stands a chance of making it to the roster this time around? Here are 15 characters we’d like to see along with one who’s seemingly confirmed.

Bughuul – Sinister

Pretend the second film never happened and Bughuul is actually a very under-utilized villain. He specializes in hypnotizing children to murder their families and then stealing their souls afterwards. Maybe his Fatality could be filming an opponent being murdered and then stealing their soul away (before the obligatory jump scare on the player)? If the cinematography worked for Johnny Cage, it might work here too.

Talking heads, clowns, and turians- of course they're more interesting.

It’s all too easy to bungle a video game companion character spectacularly, and there have been several high profile examples over the years that support that notion, sadly enough. But by that same token, there have also been so many games that have featured some truly amazing companion characters. Characters who are along with us for the journey (or parts of it) and make it so much richer than it would have been without them, characters who constantly delight us with their amazing personalities and antics. This feature is dedicated to all those characters, and here we’re going to list fifteen of them. Do note that this isn’t a comprehensive list by any means, and given the sheer number of amazing companions we’ve seen in games over the years, there’s every chance that we’ve missed out on several notable ones. So if you can think of a name that you don’t see on this list, don’t forget to mention it in your comments.

WARNING: There may be some spoilers ahead.

TRIP (ENSLAVED: ODYSSEY TO THE WEST)

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is a woefully overlooked and criminally underrated game, and the character of Trip is perfectly emblematic of just how good a game it was. On paper, Trip should be nothing more than yet another annoying character in a glorified escort mission – you literally have to carry her weight – but she proves to be so much more. During gameplay, she can actually be pretty helpful, but what helps her really stand out is just how well written she is as a character, plain and simple. That excellent writing is backed up by equally excellent acting and voice work, and watching her relationship with Monkey grow over the course of the game is one of the highlights in an excellent game.

Some pretty out there stuff being made available this week.

Microsoft continues its initiative to bring the best of the Xbox 360’s library on to the Xbox One, via their excellent backwards compatibility initiative. The latest additions to the service include Alice: Madness Returns, the trippy sequel to the original Alice by American McGee. That original game is actually included as free DLC for Alice: Madness Returns, so you basically get both games playable on the Xbox One here.

Alice isn’t the only trippy game being made playable on Xbox One, either- Suda51’s Shadows of the Damned is also now playable on the console. The game, which was a collaboration between Suda, Shinji Mikami (of Resident Evil fame), and Akira Yamaoka (of Silent Hill fame), is an excellent outing- so do be sure to give it a go if you haven’t already.

The final game of this batch is Rocket Knight, the 2010 Sega game. This one wasn’t actually all that great, but if you’ve a hankering for some old school Sega style gaming, it’s not the worst find you could pick up, either.

So far, Grasshopper Manufacture head Goichi Suda aka Suda 51 has featured some kind of assassin in every single game he’s worked in. But given the impressive track record his company has had with No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned, Killer7 and the upcoming Killer is Dead, it’s becoming hard not to see a pattern.

When quizzed about this by Siliconera, Suda simply responded jokingly, “I think going back to the core essence, I used to be an assassin and that really reflects on what kind of games I want to make.

“I’m sorry, that’s me just being jetlagged. When you defeat an enemy, that equals death. If defeat equals death and you’re thinking about the fine line between living and dying, to express that in an action-oriented game an assassin [as a character] makes it much easier to express that.”

Sure, Suda. “Jetlagged”. Right.

The upcoming Killer is Dead has you playing as Mondo Zappa, an assassin who goes around bopping villains who use augmented weaponry to wreck havoc.
