Animal Well is Now Available on Xbox Series X/S

2024 has been a year of many indie darlings, and Animal Well was one in particular that stood out to many upon its release. Developed by solo developer Billy Basso, the Metroidvania title launched for nearly all platforms barring Xbox earlier this year, and now it has completed the set with an Xbox release.

At the recent Xbox Partner Preview, publisher Bigmode announced that not only is Animal Well coming to Xbox Series X/S, it is available on Microsoft’s current-gen consoles today. Check out the trailer below for a glimpse of what the game has in store.

Animal Well puts its primary focus on exploration, encouraging nonlinear traversal and progression through its dense, intricately crafted world. With little to no combat but plenty of puzzles and platforming challenges, alongside gorgeous pixel art visuals, it certainly carves out a unique niche for itself.

Animal Well is also available on PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Billy Basso’s Animal Well, a bizarre 2D Metroidvania title, is available for PS5 (including via PlayStation Plus Extra), PC and Nintendo Switch. It sees players exploring the titular world, spelunking through caves and uncovering its many secrets. Check out the launch trailer below for some teases of what to expect.

Boasting nonlinear exploration, Animal Well lets you collect items in your preferred order. The latter can be used in different ways, which makes for some interesting interactions with enemies and the environment. Since you’re not super-powerful, ingenuity will be the key to survival.

Interestingly, the developer touts that the main game is “just the beginning” and that there are years of secrets to discover. Thus far, Animal Well has accrued a Metascore of 91 from 18 critical reviews, indicating universal acclaim. Many praise the sheer range of secrets and surprises alongside the visual details. An Xbox Series X/S version hasn’t been announced, so stay tuned for updates.

You can never have too many good Metroidvanias, and another promising one is looming on the horizon. Animal Well, developed by solo dev Billy Basso (aka Shared Memory), is a game that has been on many a radar for a while now, and after years of development, the puzzle-platforming pixel art Metroidvania is finally almost ready to release.

Publisher BIGMODE has released a new trailer for Animal Well and announced that the game will be launching in May. It will be available for $24.99, and interestingly enough, it’ll be the first game to be published by BIGMODE, an indie publishing label that was established in 2022 by YouTuber Jason Gastrow (aka videogamedunkey) and his wife Leah Gastrow.

“I started development on Animal Well seven years ago and spent the majority of my evenings and weekends since that time working on it,” said solo developer Billy Basso. “I quit my day job about two years ago to finish the game and couldn’t be prouder of how the game turned out. This has been my passion for a long time, and I’m so excited to finally share it with the world.”

Animal Well will be available on May 9 for PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. There’s no word yet on whether an Xbox Series X/S version is planned.
