The PS2 era was no slouch when it came to difficult games.

When talking about difficult games these days, the conversation often defaults to titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Bloodborne, Nioh or even Spelunky. It’s easy to forget just how frustrating older titles could be, especially in the PlayStation 2 era. Without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the hardest PS2 titles and what made them such a slog.

Shinobi

Nioh’s “masocore” description actually describes Sega’s Shinobi way better. While it starts out relatively fine, things quickly spiral into the deepest depths of hell. Are you constantly killing enemies? If not, you’ll die from the cursed sword which is slowly draining your health. Died from the insane platforming challenges? Have fun restarting the entire level because there are no checkpoints in between. The bosses are similarly torturous. You can unlock Joe Musashi from the original Shinobi, who doesn’t suffer from constantly health loss and has unlimited shurikens that deal more damage, but only after making significant progress.

Stuck in the annals of time, these PS2 games warrant appreciation.

The PlayStation 2 is one of the most successful consoles of all time, selling over 155 million units in its lifetime. It was home to a number of classic franchises, from Metal Gear Solid and Gran Turismo to God of War and Grand Theft Auto. However, there are a number of titles from the PS2 era that either didn’t perform well commercially or aren’t really appreciated in the present day. Let’s take a look at 15 of them here.

Ico

Are you tired about hearing how underrated Ico was (and still is)? Well, we’re not tired of saying it. Developed by Sony Japan Studio and Team Ico, the story of Ico and Yorda – told deftly through minimalist dialogue and incredible aesthetics – is still underappreciated. In terms of animation, presentation and puzzles, Ico was ahead of its time in 2001. It’s still a shame that it only sold 700,000 copies worldwide as of 2009.

These games let you embrace the darkness and wreak havoc on foes.

Demons are a dime a dozen in video games, whether it’s as terrifying foes or mysterious allies. But how many times have you had to the opportunity to play as a demon, unleashing those demonic powers for yourself? Let’s take a look at 15 titles that offer that opportunity (with some mixing a bit of evil in to go with it).

The Darkness – Jackie Estacado

Jackie Estacado seems to be your average, run of the mill gangster. That is, until he’s possessed by The Darkness, an ancient malevolent entity that wreaks havoc and rips people apart, among other things. The Darkness has inhabited Jackie’s family line for generations and wars with him for control. While considered a demon in the games, the comic books reveal The Darkness to be the embodiment of chaos and evil, the void before the light and other such discomforting terms.

"We're constantly thinking about it."

Ask any Shin Megami Tensei fan what the best game in the series is, and the answer you get will almost always be Nocturne. The third game in the franchise launched on the PlayStation 2 (to date the only mainline Shin Megami Tensei game to not have debuted on a Nintendo system), and is widely acknowledged to be the peak of the series- certainly, it was what caused the series to become a cult hit over in the west.

In all the years since the game’s launch, however, it has not been re-released even once. It got a PS2 Classics release on the PS3, sure, but that’s it- by and large, if you want to play the game, you need to hunt down the PS2 version. Surely a remake or even a re-release is something Atlus has considered?

Speaking in a development update on the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei 5 (translated by Gematsu), producer Kazuyuki Yamai noted that a Nocturne re-release is something that Atlus is “always thinking about”. “We’re constantly considering a port or remake of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. We’re thinking we want to watch for an opportunity,” he said.

With Shin Megami Tensei 5 coming to the Switch some time in the future, maybe Atlus can look at re-releasing Nocturne for the platform, to prime players up ahead of the launch.
