Ever wondered why current consoles do not run many PC RTS games? The answer should be pretty simple. You can’t do anything on 512MB RAM for games like these.

Creative Assembly the developers of the Total War series have said the same thing, and they also mention that next gen we could be seeing the series head to the consoles.

“The current generation of consoles just can’t cope – they don’t have enough memory, by a large factor. Those technical reasons are probably the only reasons. A lot of people think that UI’s a problem, because no one’s really done it well before,” Studio director Mike Simpson said to Eurogamer.

“I don’t think that’s a fundamental thing – I just think it’s simply that no one’s really done it very well before. A lot of the games have been ports of PC games without too much thought having gone into it.”

This is a pretty straightforward answer, and hopefully the next gen consoles will pack-in enough RAM so that we could see amazing RTS games reach a bigger audience.

Sega have announced a new DLC campaign for Shogun 2 entitled Rise of the Samurai. It will be released in September 2011 . This DLC will based on the Gempei War which is set 400 years prior to Total War.

Creative Assembly are set to launch a giant Shogun 2: Total War patch later today.

The developer said it’ll introduce four new multiplayer maps, DirectX 11 support and an “enormous amount of fixes” for the PC RTS.

“We haven’t scheduled when today the patch will be released – these things are quite unpredictable, as it depends on when we get it up on Steam and if there are any hitches in the upload (which we’ll correct today, of course),” said Creative Assembly’s Craig Laycock.

In a recent post on the forum, community manager Craig Laycock announced:

“We’re planning to roll out some fairly substantial fixes in the coming weeks and months. The first stage of this is Patch 2 which, we’re thrilled to announce, will also upgrade the engine to DirectX 11. This means those of you with DX11-capable cards will be able to access features such as hardware tessellation and enhanced shadowing. Patch 2 will also bring Anti-Aliasing support.”

A number of fixes and modifications to the multiplayer game elements will also be included in patch 2, which Laycock says the team are aiming to release in the first week of May.

Gotta love that post-release support.

Homefront  releases March 15th, 2011 on the PC.

Sega has announced all the pre-order incentives for it’s upcoming game, Shogun 2. They have also detailed where to buy it. Check out the entire listing below:

Standard Edition – available from launch

Limited Edition – available now from most online stockists

Collector’s Edition – Pre-order the Collector’s Edition (which includes a copy of the game, a figurine and a limited edition artbook) of Total War: Shogun 2 here.

There is also a previously unannounced Chess Set Edition, available atGame.co.uk.

It includes:

• Exclusive chess set – A high quality Shogun 2: Total War themed chess set. The chess set is made from bamboo, and features individually hand-painted figures
• Exclusive ninja clan – the Hattori clan are masters of the Iga-ryu ninjutsu – a unique collection of martial skills and guerrilla techniques. This additional in-game faction is only available in the Limited Edition and includes the most powerful battlefield ninja units.
• Extra historical scenario – The Battle of Nagashino saw an alliance between the Oda and Tokugawa clans clashing against the legendary Takeda clan in 1575. Takeda was ultimately defeated but, as in all Total War battles, victory lies in your hands and by playing one of these three factions you can repeat history… or even rewrite it!
• Special armour for your avatar – this complete set of armour will make your General’s avatar stand out on the battlefield and will reward you with the Bad Omen retainer that affects morale to enemy ashigaru (foot soldier) units, giving you a competitive advantage online.

The game will be released exclusively for the PC in March this year.

It is now confirmed that Shogun 2: Total War will be released on March 15, 2011, this was revealed by Sega.

Creative Assembly’s community manager, Craig Laycock, has said that the company won’t ship the game until the AI is “perfect”, due to problem with the AI in previous titles.

This is good news, the game is not too far away from release.
