Sid Meier’s Civilization 3: Complete is currently available for free on the Humble Store. It’s one of the finest Civilization games ever created and is currently free for the next 10 hours so you’ll need to act quickly. Hit up the Humble Store and pick it up today.

Civilization 3, developed by Firaxis Games, is pretty similar to its contemporaries in that you start in an early age of history and proceed to build your own civilization. Create an empire, establish relations with other cultures, declare war, research new technologies and much more in order to survive till the modern age.

As for Civilization 3: Complete, it contains the base game along with the expansions Play the World (eight new civilizations, new units) and Conquest (nine additional scenarios which bring new governments, resources, Wonders of the World and more). All the patches released till date will also be included. Though it’s not quite the friendliest Civilization for first time players, it’s still worth checking out.

More than 1 billion hours racked up by players.

Sid Meier’s Civilization has had a very strong 25 years since the first game launched in 1991, selling 33 million units across the entire series. This was revealed by Meier at the DICE Summit 2016 during a panel focused on the 25th anniversary of the franchise.

As per VentureBeat, Meier said that with regards to the first Civilization, “There was a hint that strategy might be something cool. We wanted to end up with something big. What about the history of Civilization? We were inspired by SimCity with god games. The core was a number of simple systems: economic, combat, growth. Everything was understandable on its own. Once it all interacted, the decisions for the player became very interesting.”

When Civilization 2 released, the developer projected 38,000 copies to be sold. However, it did much better, a fact which Meier credits mod support for. “So many [of the player’s] ideas and energy has gone into the game. Brian [Reynolds] introduced the idea of modding into Civ II, and the game took off. “Something about Civ seems to bring out the game designer in people.”

Thus far there have been 66 different versions of Civilization released across all platforms and of the 33 million copies sold in the series’ history, Civilization 5 and its expansions contributed to 8 million. It also seems that players have spent more than 1 billion hours playing the game as per Steam stats and sales.

Says there are advantages and disadvantages to Kickstarter.

While the buzz over Kickstarter has been incredibly positive since Double Fine Productions raised a ton of capital for its upcoming adventure game Broken Age, legendary designer and industry professional Sid Meier, who currently heads up Firaxis Games (of XCOM: Enemy Unknown fame) recently spoke to GamesIndustry as to why he wouldn’t be hitting up the crowd-funding site any time soon.

“You’ve got to convince people to support it and create trailers or whatever it takes to get the support. I think you kind of lock yourself into a lot of ideas early. I really enjoy the luxury of changing my design and evolving over time.

“I’d be a little concerned with Kickstarter if I committed to X, Y, and Z and I found out down the road that Z didn’t work very well, I kind of promised to do this. I think it’s great for people who want that indie environment, but there are advantages and disadvantages to each situation.”

As for working with a big publisher, Meier says that, “They do all the stuff I don’t want to do; they allow me to make games and really focus on that part of what it takes to get a game out there. I get to design games, I get to program games, I get to work with the artists and the sound guys and do the fun stuff.

“They worry about testing it and publishing it and promoting it and selling it–whatever it takes to do that I would be really bad at, they do. So more power to Chris Roberts and the Kickstarter, but having a great publisher is a real asset and allows me to focus on the things that I can do and not worry about all the other stuff that needs to be worried about.”

Meier’s last title, which he designed on his own, is the free to play Ace Patrol available for Apple iOS.
