The gameplay footage showcases Black Panther taking on several soldiers in a nice-looking lounge with melee combat and the environment.

While developer Skydance New Media has been quiet about its upcoming title Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra since it announced its delay to early 2026, a new video has popped up on the Internet that gives us a glimpse at the title’s gameplay. According to Mp1st, the gameplay video comes courtesy of a developer who has worked on the title, and is paired with screenshots that were reportedly created between 2022 and 2023.

The video is of particular note, since it gives us a solid look at what we can expect when it comes to gameplay in Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. The video features Black Panther taking on a horde of soldiers in a lounge. There is an emphasis on melee combat, and the video also showcases quite a bit of environmental interaction and destruction as Black Panther makes is way through enemy soldiers.

We also get a general idea of what kind of melee combat gameplay we can expect from the title. Judging from the video, it looks like players will get a wide array of different attacks, as well as defensive options like dodging.

It is worth keeping in mind, however, that the video features gameplay from an early build of the game. Due to this, things are quite rough, both from a visual fidelity standpoint as well as some of the jankiness in things like animation. The release version of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra will likely have ironed all of these features out, and will probably end up being a lot more polished.

The images, also from earlier builds of the game, show off various angles of the same lounge featured in the video, with some of the screenshots also showing off what destruction in the level would look like. There are also other images showing off what looks like an underground railroad level which might have a higher emphasis on stealth-based gameplay, as well as a larger-looking level with Black Panther hanging out on the balcony of a building overlooking the rest of the city.

Skydance had announced that it was pushing Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra back to 2026 in May. The announcement came despite one of the voice actors—Khary Payton who plays Black Panther in the game—speculated about its potential launch happening around Christmas 2025. “We’re still working,” he said at the time. “We’re planning on 2025…We’re thinking like a Christmas situation. But I’m so excited.”

Project lead Amy Hennig, known for her work on action adventure classics like Legacy of Kain and Uncharted, spoke about wanting to do something new with Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. In an interview from back in December 2024, Hennig mentioned wanting to do something groundbreaking with cinematic storytelling in the game.

“As a new studio trying to do some groundbreaking stuff with cinematically presented games, the way we invite the most people in is by bringing them something they already know and love, but in a new form,” she said.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is being developed for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Originally slated for this year, Skydance New Media will use the extra time to polish and deliver "the best possible experience."

Skydance New Media’s Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra has been delayed. Instead of launching this year, it’s now targeting early 2026. In a statement on Twitter, the development team said it was taking “additional time” for more polish and to deliver “the best possible experience, and one that lives up to our vision.”

It also looks forward to sharing more “soon,” which could mean new trailers and gameplay. “When” is the real question, especially with events like the Summer Game Fest showcase and more coming soon, so stay tuned for updates.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra stars Captain America and Black Panther (albeit T’Challa’s grandfather, Azzuri) alongside Howling Commandos member Gabriel Jones and Wakanda’s spy leader Nanali. Unfolding during World War 2, with occupied Paris as one of the locations, players will also travel to Wakanda and other yet-to-be-revealed places.

Developed on Unreal Engine 5, director Amy Hennig and her team have big aspirations and want the visual fidelity to be “high so that you could kind of forget that you’re looking at a game.” The developer has not announced which platforms the action-adventure title will be released for.

"We’re looking for just an incredible cinematic experience for everybody, and I pinch myself," says Khary Payton, who voices Black Panther.

Skydance New Media’s Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, helmed by Uncharted creator Amy Hennig, is out this year, yet a release date remains unconfirmed. Voice actor Khary Payton, who plays Black Panther (Azzuri, the grandfather of T’Challa), has provided an update, indicating that it may be a “Christmas situation.”

Speaking to The Direct at MultiCon in Los Angeles, Payton said, “We’re still working. We’re planning on 2025…We’re thinking like a Christmas situation. But I’m so excited.” Of course, this could also mean the team is targeting the holiday season and still hasn’t narrowed down a specific date.

Later in the interview, Payton says that the team wants players to experience the game like it’s Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead.

“And to be playing him in the video game, playing his grandfather, be playing a version of Black Panther, and looking on there and seeing that it’s me… It’s like the most photo-realistic…We want people to play this game and have the entire family sit on the sofa and watch it like they’re watching ‘Game of Thrones,’ or ‘The Walking Dead,’ or something. We’re looking for just an incredible cinematic experience for everybody, and I pinch myself.”

He also promised that the experience would be “so good” and praised Hennig. “I still can’t believe that it’s happening. But it’s going to be so good. Amy Hennig, who did the ‘Uncharted’ series, was the director and writer. She is just so amazing, and I’m like, ‘Man, we couldn’t have asked for a better head of this project.’ So I know it’s taken a while, but trust me, it is going to be worth it.”

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is in development for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Set in Paris during its occupation in World War 2, it features Captain America and Black Panther working together against Hydra. Gabriel Jones of the Howling Commandos and Wakandan spy leader Nanali are also playable.

Hennig said the developer is “trying to do some groundbreaking stuff” with cinematically presented games, inviting the most people in by “bringing them something they already know and love, but in a new form.”

"The way we invite the most people in is by bringing them something they already know and love, but in a new form," Hennig says about Skydance New Media's upcoming action-adventure title.

Having led the development and creation of Legacy of Kain, Uncharted, and more, Amy Hennig obviously has a long and proven track record with narrative-driven cinematic action-adventure titles. With Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, the Hennig-leg studio Skydance New Media is looking to hit similar heights.

Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hennig stated she hopes Marvel 1943 is able to deliver “a shared living room experience” that is as engaging to play as it is to watch, similar to the Uncharted games.

“As a new studio trying to do some groundbreaking stuff with cinematically presented games, the way we invite the most people in is by bringing them something they already know and love, but in a new form,” she said.

According to Hennig, a big part of that will be Marvel 1943’s graphical ambitions, with the game aiming for photorealistic visuals, while ensuring that the action and presentation remain grounded is also something the development team is focused on.

“We’re entirely CG, so it’s really easy to get ungrounded real quick,” she said. “You can see even the movies can fall under that trap; too much CG and you don’t know the ground you’re standing on. We really wanted the visual fidelity to be high so that you could kind of forget that you’re looking at a game, that it should feel and look and sound and smell like you’re watching a great Marvel movie or TV show, but you’re driving the action.”

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is set to tell a globetrotting story that will take players to a variety of different locations. The first of these was confirmed to be Occupied Paris earlier this year, while Wakanda has also been added to that list, with artwork also shown off for the latter. Check it out through here.

In addition to Occupied Paris and Wakanda, the game will also take players to several other locations that will be revealed later, it's confirmed.

When Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra was officially unveiled earlier this year, developer Skydance New Media confirmed that it will take place in Occupied Paris in the midst of the Second World War. As it turns out, however, that’s one of several locations that will be featured in the game, with another one now confirmed.

Via Entertainment Weekly, the developer has confirmed that Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra will also see players travelling to Wakanda, with a piece of artwork revealed to showcase what the location’s dense jungles will look like. You can view it below.

According to Skydance New Media boss Amy Hennig, best known as the creator of Legacy of Kain and Uncharted, the game will “tell a globe-trotting story”, with several other “yet-to-be-revealed locations” also featured. As per Hennig, the location will also tout “photo-real, cinema-real level of detail”.

As for what to expect from Wakanda’s role in the game’s story, especially given its period setting, Hennig explained, “Wakanda at this point in time is hidden away from the outside world and protected by this impenetrable jungle. They are non-interventionist, but events transpire that pull them into the conflict. They have to protect their interests. The world is getting smaller. No satellites yet, but there will be soon. You can shoot down planes that maybe want to fly over Wakanda, but how long can you stay in the shadows?”

Hennig went on to add that the game’s primary protagonists – Captain America and Black Panther – are “confronting the same enemies and they’re concerned about the same events that are transpiring, but they’re initially almost working against each other. Good people have to work together to overcome evil. If you separate, then you’re not going to succeed.”

Hennig has also spoken about Marvel 1943’s ambitions in terms of visual fidelity, and how developer Skydance New Media is “trying to do some groundbreaking stuff with cinematically presented games”. Read more on that through here.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is due out in 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Skydance New Media's single-player action-adventure title is due out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC at some point in 2025.

As a single-player action-adventure narrative-driven game starring not one, but two iconic Marvel superheroes, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra has registered itself on more than a few radars, and the fact that it’s being developed by a team led by Uncharted creator Amy Hennig only serves to make it that much more of an intriguing prospect. Now, developer Skydance New Media has also unveiled the company that it is partnering with to publish the title.

It has been announced that Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is going to be published by Plaion. The publisher, which is owned by the Embracer Group, was previously known as Koch Media, and will serve as the global publisher for Skydance New Media’s upcoming action-adventure title.

“We are proud to partner with Skydance Games and industry legend Amy Hennig on what is one of the most anticipated AAA games currently in development,” said Plaion CEO Klemens Kundratitz in a press release. “This partnership between two ambitious independent companies is a testament to Plaion’s ongoing mission to become a global force in videogame publishing.”

“We believe Plaion is the perfect publishing partner for the multiplatform, worldwide release of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra” said Julian Beak, co-president at Skydance Games. “For our studio’s debut title, we’re crafting an original Marvel story directed by Amy Hennig. We’re thrilled to have found a global publisher that shares our ambitious vision for the project.”

“Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is an exquisite and bold take on some of our most beloved and timeless characters,” said Haluk Mentes, head of Marvel Games. “The world-class development talent of Skydance Games and global publishing capabilities of Plaion are an excellent team-up to ensure we deliver on the massive promise this game has. We’re excited to collaborate and bring Marvel 1943 to players around the world.”

The narrative-driven action-adventure title is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Uncharted creator Amy Hennig’s Skydance New Media has officially unveiled Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, a single-player action-adventure game set during the Second World War that will see players stepping into the shoes of Captain America and Azzuri, the Black Panther of that Era, and above all else, the game’s visual fidelity has turned more than a few heads. During the recent State of Unreal presentation at GDC, Hennig offered further details on the game, including how Unreal Engine is aiding its development.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is being developed on Unreal Engine 5.4, and is also making use of MetaHuman technology, enabling photorealistic faces and highly detailed performance capture. Hennig also talked about how the engine’s Nanita and Lumen technologies are being used to aim for more detailed environments. Check out the full showing below, courtesy of IGN.

Meanwhile, Marvel has also revealed additional details on the game. Set in 1943’s Occupied Paris, Rise of Hydra will see Khary Payton (best known for his role as Ezekiel in The Walking Dead) playing the role of Azzuri, aka the Black Panther, while Drew Moerlein will play Steve Rogers, aka Captain America.

The two will be joined in the main cast of playable characters by American soldier and Howling Commandos member Gabriel Jones, who’s played by Marque Richardson, and Wakandan spy Nanali, played by Megalyn Echikunwoke. Other key characters in the story are Howard Stark, played by Joel Johnstone, and French Resistance member Julie, played by Lyne Renée.

Meanwhile, the game’s music is being composed by Stephen Barton (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor).

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is due out in 2025.

Developer Skydance New Media has released a new trailer that showcases in-game Unreal Engine 5 footage for the action-adventure title.

We’ve been hearing about Skydance New Media’s Marvel game for a while now. In 2021, it was announced that the Uncharted creator Amy Hennig-leg studio was working on a AAA single-player action-adventure Marvel game, and the following year, it was revealed that the game would be set in World War 2 and star Captain America and the Black Panther of that era as its playable protagonists.

A recent leak seemed to spill the beans on the game’s official name, and that has now been formally confirmed. As part of Epic Games’ State of Unreal presentation at GDC, the aforementioned Hennig and Skydance New Media debuted a new trailer for the game, confirming that it is officially titled Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.

As its name suggests, the game will see Hydra – a shadowy Nazi-offshoot organization in Marvel lore – acting as the primary antagonistic force, but our heroes are going to have some friction between themselves as well.

Steve Rogers aka Captain America will be working with Howling Commandos member Gabriel Jones, while Azzuri – the Black Panther of 1943 (and T’Challa’s grandfather) – will be accompanied by Nanali, the leader of Wakanda’s spy network. The two groups will clash (with all four characters being playable), but ultimately, will have to put their differences aside to form an uneasy alliance in order to take on a common foe. Check out the trailer below.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is set to launch in 2025. Platforms haven’t yet been confirmed.

Uncharted creator Amy Hennig's studio officially announced its AAA action-adventure Marvel title in 2022.

It’s been close to a couple of years since Skydance New Media – led by Uncharted creator Amy Hennig – announced that it was working on a AAA narrative-driven action-adventure Marvel game that would see Captain America and Black Panther teaming up together. Details on the game have been scant since then, to the extent that we don’t even know what it’s going to be called.

Now, however, a known leaker may have shed some light on that in particular. Over on Twitter, @Kurasakis – who accurately leaked the name and existence of Sonic X Shadow Generations before it was officially announced – has claimed that Skydance New Media’s Marvel game will be titled Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.

Previously, it was officially confirmed that the game will be set during World War 2. Captain America and T’Challa’s grandfather Azzuri – the Black Panther of that time – will star as protagonists, but they’ll also be joined by two additional, non-superpowered playable characters in Howling Commandos member Gabriel Jones and Wakandan Spy Network leader Nanali.

Skydance New Media has said that the game is going to be a “deeply cinematic” experience, similar to Amy Hennig’s past works. Meanwhile, though it will have multiple playable characters teaming up together, co-op won’t be featured.

For fans of Marvel's worlds and characters, there are plenty of major upcoming titles to look forward to.

From the highs of Spider-Man to the lows of Avengers to the somewhere-in-betweens of Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel’s recent track record with big, AAA blockbusters has been somewhat hit or miss, but slowly yet surely, it’s continuing to find more and more of its footing. Especially when looking ahead to the future, it’s hard not to look at the lineup of Marvel games that are currently in the pipeline at a number of developers around the world and be optimistic about what it has in store, especially given the fact that, right now, there’s a number of them that are promising single player narrative-driven experiences, something that Marvel is particularly well suited for.

As such, here, we’re going to take a look at every upcoming game based on a Marvel property that has been officially confirmed to be in development so far and talk about everything we know about them at this point in time.

MARVEL’S WOLVERINE

With three excellent Spider-Man games now under its belt, Insomniac Games has comfortably carved out an unforgettable place for itself in Marvel history, and the next challenge that the studio is looking to take on is none other than Wolverine himself. Marvel’s Wolverine has been in development for a while now, and even though official details on the game are scant at best, purely based on how well Insomniac has done with the Spider-Man license, it’s easy to get excited about what it’ll do with Wolverine.

Of course, though official details on the game aren’t readily available, there has been plenty of information that has emerged through other channels. Even if we don’t dive into the data breach that Insomniac suffered in December, prior reports over the last couple of years had shed light on some interesting details about the game, alleging that it will be a semi-open world experience set in the fictional Marvel city of Madripoor, while adopting a no-holds-barred approach to the grittiness and violence that one would normally associate with Wolverine and his adamantium claws.

How accurate those details will end up being remains to be seen, and for now, there’s no word on when the game will be out- though reports have claimed that it’s targeting a 2026 launch. Does that mean we might get to a new look at it sometime this year? Or would Insomniac prefer to hold off for a little longer and kick off the game’s marketing cycle in earnest sometime in 2025?

MARVEL’S BLADE

This one came out of nowhere. Arkane Studios may have had a 2023 to forget, thanks to the disaster that was Redfall, but its Lyon team – responsible for the likes of Dishonored 2 and Deathloop – ended the year on a strong note, with the surprising announcement that it was developing a Blade game. Now, it’s fair to say that the vampire-hunting vampire doesn’t have the universal mainstream appeal of someone like a Spider-Man or an Iron Man (or not yet, anyway), but as the property’s many dedicated fans would tell you, the prospect of a Blade game that prescribes to the design philosophies and sense of style one usually associates with Arkane sounds almost like an unlikely yet perfect fit- much like Spider-Man and Insomniac when that pairing was first announced.

So what do we know about Marvel’s Blade so far? It’s going to be a single player action-adventure game that is going to integrate many of the immersive sim elements Arkane has become renowned for. Set in the city of Paris, it’s been described as a mature and gritty experience – appropriately enough for Blade – and, interestingly enough, will be Arkane’s first third-person game. As for when it’ll be out? There isn’t much clarity there. At the time of the game’s announcement, Bethesda said the game had “just begun development”, though the LinkedIn profile of campaign director Dana Nightingale would suggest that it’s been in the works since 2022. Either way, it’s quite a ways off yet, with journalist Jeff Grubb having claimed that, as things stand right now, the game is targeting a 2027 launch at the very earliest.

SKYDANCE NEW MEDIA’S CAPTAIN AMERICA AND BLACK PANTHER GAME

Probably one of the more unique games in this entire list, given the fact that it’s starring not one, but two renowned Marvel heroes. In 2021, it was announced that Skydance New Media – led by Uncharted creator Amy Hennig – was working on a new Marvel game, and in 2022, it was announced that the game would star both Captain America and Black Panther. Set during World War 2, along with the two heroes, the game will also star two non-superpowered humans, and feature all four as its main playable heroes. The premise in and of itself is a fascinating one, and when you add to that the fact that the game is being billed as a big, cinematic, story-driven blockbuster, it becomes even more enticing.

The last time we heard anything about this game was over a year ago at this point, and there hasn’t really been any new information on it in the time that’s passed since then. With no gameplay footage having been revealed so far and not even an official title having been confirmed, our hope is that we’ll be seeing more of this game at some point in the not-too-distant.

CLIFFHANGER GAMES’ BLACK PANTHER GAME

Skydance’s game isn’t the only one that will be representing Black Panther. Leaks had claimed for a while that EA was working on a single player, open world Black Panther game set in Wakanda, and in July last year, that was confirmed. The game is being developed by Cliffhanger Games, a new Electronic Arts studio established in Seattle and let by Kevin Stephens, who was previously the studio head at Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War developer Monolith Productions.

Up to this point, we’ve seen nothing of the Black Panther game, but the few details that have been revealed sound promising. It’s going to be set in an open world Wakanda, which Cliffhanger Games is describing as an “expansive and reactive” setting. Interestingly, it will also feature what’s been dubbed the Open Story system, which is promising “dynamic narrative and branching dialogue” to allow players to shape the story how they see fit. Exactly how that differs from regular choice and consequence mechanics remains to be seen- but the idea of a Black Panther game with player choice and a branching story is certainly an intriguing one.

Black Panther is being built on Unreal Engine 5, and upon its announcement last year, was said to be in early development. In all likelihood, that means it’ll be at least a couple of years before we start hearing more about it.

MOTIVE STUDIO’S IRON MAN GAME

Before Black Panther, the first Marvel game that EA announced was Iron Man, being developed by Motive Studio, the team behind 2023’s incredible remake of Dead Space. And what exactly do we know about it? Well, not much. We know it’s going to be a single player, third-person, action-adventure title, but that’s pretty much it as far as concrete details are concerned. Beyond that, job ads have suggested that it might be an open world game, and that, unlike Motive’s past projects – all of which were built on EA’s internal Frostbite engine – it’s being made on Unreal Engine 5.

There isn’t much clarity on when the game is going to launch either. When it was announced in September 2022, it was said to be in pre-production, and a little over a year later, in October last year, Motive Studio GM Patrick Klaus revealed that the game was still in early pre-production. What does that mean for how far away the game is from releasing? Well, it’s probably going to be a while. But will we be seeing at least a debut trailer at some point in the next year or so? That seems perhaps a little likelier.

EA’S THIRD MARVEL GAME

When Motive Studio’s Iron Man game was confirmed to be in development in 2022, EA revealed that it was set to be a part of a multi-game partnership that the company had entered into with Marvel, with a subsequent Bloomberg report claiming that the deal was going to cover three games. Since then, the second game has been confirmed as Cliffhanger Games’ Black Panther title- so what could the third game be? Given the complete lack of information (official or otherwise) on this front, all we can do for now is speculate, but based on how EA is handling Black Panther and Iron Man, it seems safe to assume that the third title will be another single player action-adventure experience. With those two still being in the early stages of production though, it’s probably going to be quite a while before we start hearing anything even close to concrete about the third game.
