Skylanders is such an unlikely success. But a success is what it is, to the extent that it caused the creation of a brand new genre, and imitators such as Disney and even Nintendo to follow in its footsteps. The newest game, Skyanders: Trap Team, appears to be every bit the success that the previous games in the franchise have been, and Activision announced that they will be making the new game even more desirable by introducing two new elements to the game for the first time in the franchise’s history. Two new Trap Masters – Knight Mare and Knight Light, will hit store shelves nationwide this festive season, via special Light and Dark Elemental Quest Packs. Each Elemental Quest Pack contains a Trap Master, a special Trap capable of capturing either Light or Dark villains, as well as a location piece that unlocks a special level in the game. The Light and Dark Elemental Quest Packs will be available at all major retailers nationwide.

“It’s amazing to see how deeply engrossed and fascinated our fans have been with the Skylanders franchise,” said John Coyne, vice president of Consumer Marketing at Activision Publishing, Inc. “By unveiling new Light and Dark elements and heroes to the Skylanders universe, our fans around the world will have new ways of exploring all the magic, excitement and fun of Skylands.”

Skylanders: Trap Team is the fourth game in the franchise and compatible with every single Skylanders toy released so far (so over 175 of them). It is available for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, Kindle OS, Android, and iPad.

Wallets at the ready.

Last year the team behind Skylanders – the colourful plastic toys that magically appear as playable characters in their self-titled video games – broke new ground by introducing figures with swappable tops and bottoms. It meant you could combine the unique attributes of the various Swap Force characters and create hundreds of different creatures, capable of thwarting the dastardly plans of the evil Kaos.

The kids lapped it up and the sets flew off the shelves. It was a fantastic twist on a franchise that, at the time, had already mustered staggering global sales of over $1.5bn. Our review heaped praise on it and we were drawn into the charming world (https://gamingbolt.com/skylanders-swap-force-review).

So how on earth do you follow that…? You give players the chance to play the bad guy!

"A small speaker provides the illusion that they’re now locked inside and occasionally your detainee will let out a comical quip from their cell. Believe me, the reaction from children when they see an enemy leave the screen only to continue their wailing from the Portal is fantastic – it’s a great effect.

Who hasn’t wanted to play the villain occasionally? They always tend to look cooler, have the funniest lines and the best weapons… and in the case of Skylanders Trap Team, they also have their own signature tunes too.

The main story missions see Kaos up to his old tricks once again, this time breaking some of the biggest and baddest scoundrels in Skylands out of prison. Cue your attempts to track them down and stop them from causing all kinds of mayhem!

For a game franchise so focussed on transmitting physical toys placed on the supplied “Portal of Power” into your TV, it’s a real surprise when quite the reverse happens in the new game. This time round, the fourth wall is well and truly smashed, thanks to the clever tech employed by Activision and Toys for Bob.

When you defeat certain enemies, they’re captured and magically “transferred” from the screen to the plastic prison cell attached to the side of the Portal – assuming you’ve inserted an appropriate “Trap” (a kind of totem pole-shaped piece of plastic) in the adjoining slot. A word of warning… you only get two of these Traps with the starter pack so parents should get their wallets primed to stock up on more of these colourful contraptions! Failure to have the right kind of Trap (there’s one for each element) means the villain will be consigned to a virtual vault, waiting for you to access them at a later date after you’ve been shopping.

A small speaker provides the illusion that they’re now locked inside and occasionally your detainee will let out a comical quip from their cell. Believe me, the reaction from children when they see an enemy leave the screen only to continue their wailing from the Portal is fantastic – it’s a great effect. The only real downside is that when the console is switched off, the small coloured crystals aren’t exactly fun to play with, unlike the rest of the nicely-crafted Skylanders figures.

"It’s great in these days when backwards compatibility is such a rarity that Trap Team allows you to use all the toys you’ve accumulated from the previous games too. There are still level caps and some areas are restricted but it’s great that you can revive favourite characters and have them join you on this new quest.

Still, once you’ve got these captured foes at your mercy, a simple buttonpress will make them a playable character – for a limited period at least. When they’re accessed, a timer depletes and once that runs out they need to retire back to their prison for a little R&R so their energy can regenerate. The mechanic works very well and encourages players to swap and use their contained characters at times when they will prove most effective.

Gameplay in Trap Team is instantly familiar – with nothing markedly different from the previous outings other than the Trap mechanic. Besides the usual platforming hijinks, there are numerous mini-games and puzzles to keep you busy, including the strangely absorbing Skystones Smash card game, rail shooter sections and even some fairly bizarre music-based guitar hero-type segments.

It’s great in these days when backwards compatibility is such a rarity that Trap Team allows you to use all the toys you’ve accumulated from the previous games too. There are still level caps and some areas are restricted but it’s great that you can revive favourite characters and have them join you on this new quest. Like all the other Skylanders before them, the Trap Master heroes, the new mini characters and the bad guys all have a distinct personality and charm. The Starter Pack we received for review contained the game and Portal, two figures (Food Fight – a small critter who shoots tomatoes, and Snap Shot – a bow and sword-wielding powerhouse), two Traps (Life and Water elements), character sheets, trading cards and a poster.

"Trap Team is yet another brilliant entry from Activision and promises hours of enjoyment. The new toys are great, the “Trap” innovation is fun and unique, while the story, arenas and Doom Challenges – and all those collectibles – mean there’s plenty of reason to revisit this magical world.

As ever, the visuals are fantastic, sharp and cartoony. Each in-game character perfectly resembles their little plastic toy and they’re well made and suitably resilient to young hands. The environments are nicely detailed and full of activity, with various paths to take and plenty of collectibles to gather. The backgrounds are also really attractive, with something always happening somewhere in the distance. Sound-wise, the effects are great too – whether it’s the cut scenes with their trademark humour to the splat of a suitably-silly weapon, or the growling and chatter of an incoming enemy. And the sounds emanating from the Portal speaker are nice and clear.

There are three main game modes on offer: the main campaign, the Kaos Doom Challenge – a horde and tower defence mode where you have to survive wave after wave of enemies – and the Arenas. The story missions, in particular, are of decent length and a fair old challenge on the higher difficulties. Played co-operatively they’re a blast too, although there’s no split screen so you can’t wander too far from one another as a rubber band pulls you back together, which can be a little distracting, confusing and restrictive at times. Signposting is very good with big arrows popping up over doors that need to be unlocked or people you need to talk to, but there is ample opportunity to go off the beaten track and explore. Each stage has countless hidden items to find and an abundance of treasures, offering extra replayability for the more dedicated gamers in search of 100% completion and all those achievements.

Trap Team is yet another brilliant entry from Activision and promises hours of enjoyment. The new toys are great, the “Trap” innovation is fun and unique, while the story, arenas and Doom Challenges – and all those collectibles – mean there’s plenty of reason to revisit this magical world. Sure, it’s a little easy and you’ll quickly upgrade your characters, and there’s still the fact that portions of the game will be inaccessible unless you spend more cash, but it shouldn’t deter you from what is a great game for all the family.

A complete guide for Skylanders Trap Team.

Check out this complete guide for Skylanders Trap Team. Here you will find a complete list for all Kaos Doom challenges, locations for collectibles like hats and legendary treasures, and Skystone Smash tips. Skylanders Trap Team is developed by Toys for Bob and being published by Activision.

Skylanders Trap Team is available now on PC, Xbox One, PS4, PlayStation3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Wii-U, Nintendo 3DS, as well as iOS and Android. Check out the complete game guide below and let us know if you have any questions in the comments section below.

Kaos Doom Challenges:

Kaos Doom is a staged based wave mode consisting of 100 different waves of enemies, in which you must defeat minions and stop from destroying your defence towers. Different Skylander characters consist of different elemental powers required for the activation of the different towers in the stage. It’s important to have a good range of characters in order to complete these stages.

Wave 1-3 (So it Begins):

The first three waves of Kaos Doom works as a tutorial for the player where they must focus on defeating enemies and defending the tower. Elemental specific Skylanders are not required for this stage. Enemies here consist of the Grinnade, Cuckoo Clocker, and the Plant Warrior.

Wave 4-10 (Enfuego Rain):

During this next section the player will need to have Skylander characters specific to the elements of the tower in order to protect and activate them from oncoming enemies. However, certain towers are multi-elemental and can will not require a specific character. Enemies here consist of the Troll Warrior, Grinnade, Bomb Shell, and the Cuckoo Clocker,

Wave 11-20 (Horrible Something):

This stage consist of a variety of different traps as well as perks that will work both to the enemy’s and the player’s own advantage. There’s also more entrance for enemies to enter the stage from, therefore self-defence and long range attacks will be useful in keeping your characters alive, and towers at bay. These enemies in the stage consist of the Eggsecutioner, Bomb Shell, Troll Warrior, Cuckoo Clocker, and the Grinnade.

Wave 21-30 (Worst Nightmare Marsh):

Enemies in this stage mostly traverse in large groups in order to weigh down the player. But as these enemies move slow attacking from far should be enough from the player, to defeat them before they reach the towers. The towers in this stage also play a crucial role in the player’s own chance of survival, they should be center of attention due to their importance towards the player. These enemies are made up of The Eye Five, Pain Yatta, Tussle Sprout, Pirate Henchmen, Shield Shredder, and the Oogler.

Wave 31-40 (Twice Doomed Marsh):

The enemies in this stage are divided between heavy and dangerous enemies which move through the level slowly. Coupled by fast moving weaker enemies that will target your towers directly before attacking the player. There are also more traps introduced in this stage but are easily avoidable by the player. Enemies here consist of the Pirate Henchmen, Oogler, Brawl and Chain, Pain Yatta, and the Eye Five.

Wave 41-50 (Itchy Lillies Marsh):

In this stage the player will experience increased frequency from the spawning of enemies, as well as an additional enemy type. Powerful attacks must be kept in reserve for disposing of foes as they move in groups. These enemy types are the Tussle Sprout, Elvilkin Cannon, Pirate Henchmen, Oogler, Brawl and Chain, Pain Yatta, and the Eye Five.

Wave 51-65 (Kaos Fury Docks):

These next segments of wave introduce a new set of enemies that are more powerful than the previous. These enemies are spawned from a new game mechanic whereby a pressurised meter coming from a machine, continuously rises throughout the stage and it’s up to the player to activate the switch in order to decrease it’s pressure. These machines are known as the Kaos Fury. Enemy types are divided between the Shield Skeleton, Grave Clobber, Scrap Shooter, Grinnade, Cross Crow, Cuckoo Clocker, and the Krankenstein.

Wave 66-80 (Twisted Twister Docks:

In this stage the player will be subjected to new traps which can have a significant affect on the player’s survival. There’s also another Kaos Fury that will build up in pressure more quickly than the previous. This stage will have the player running back and forth from the towers and Kaos Fury while avoiding the traps and defeating the stage’s enemies. The enemy types here will be the Shield Skeleton, Grave Clobber, Scrap Shooter, Grinnade, Cross Crow, Cuckoo Clocker, Krankenstein, and the Pain Yatta.

Wave 81-100 (Finally Final Docks):

In this final stage players will be put through twenty waves of harsh and time consuming enemies that will throw everything from previous stages at the player. Enemies will move in large groups as well individually and the Kaos Fury will also make a return forcing the player to divide his or her attention on multiple things at once. These enemies will be the Raven warrior, Pain Yatta, Brawlrus, Brawl and Chain, Scrap Shooter, Rocket Launchers, Cross Crow, Cuckoo Clocker, Shield Skeleton, Krankenstein, Grinnade, and the Grave Clobber.

Skystone Smash:

During Chapter 5 of the main game mode players will be introduced to a new game inside Skylands that plays out as a card battle. Skystones are required to play this game and are acquired by defeating certain enemies during the beginning of each level. These enemies are pictured during the level’s loading screen. As each each Skystone has a certain amount of Attack power it is important to use them effectively.

Keeping high powered Skystones in reserve for more powerful enemies will prove to be more beneficial than wasting their power on weaker ones. It’s also more effective to take out the more powerful enemies ahead of time before moving on to weaker enemies. There are also Special ability Skystones that can be activated during the first go in which it is played. After this it will be treated as a regular card. Below are the Special ability Skystones.

Lightning -This ability requires the Dreamcatcher Skystone and it damages the player directly.

Fireball -This ability requires the Chef Pepper Jack or the Wolfgang Skystone. It damages every Skystone that’s currently being played.

Sheepify -This ability transforms on the player’s Skystones in to a sheep with low level health, and it targets which ever Skystone is placed directly from across the player.

Heart Boost – This ability restores your health as well as increasing it beyond it’s default level. It requires the Chompy Mage or the Golden Queen.

Hats Locations:

In Skylanders Trap Team there are a number of hidden hats in the game that the player can locate for collectible purposes. Below are the locations for each hat and their location in each chapter.

In a really rather strange press release, Activision have today announced a new gameplay mode for the action figure centric video game, Skylanders Trap Team. Given the absolute absurdity of the press release, it actually took me to read it a few times to understand what was actually happening and what the new gameplay mode was. But here’s the details.

Skylanders Trap Team is getting a special gameplay update that introduces the Kaos Doom Challenge, named after the mighty emperor Kaos. Players taking part in the Kaos Doom Challenge will be tasked with facing wave after wave of enemies of increasing difficulty.

Players can choose from any one of their Skylanders heroes to do combat against the foe, but you can also build defensive towers to aid you. You can even go so far as to use Trapped Villains that you’ve gathered to help in the battle.

If you’re having a hard time figuring this one out, think Gears of War Horde Mode, but considerably less hardcore and awesome.

Skylanders: Trap Team is an upcoming action adventure 3D platforming game with role playing elements that is currently in development by Toys for Bob (Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure and Skylanders: Giants) and Activision subsidiary Beenox (The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2).

Similar to the other games in the Skylanders video games, Skylanders: Trap Team will make use of a NFC (short field communication) device which is referred to as the Traptanium Portal. This portal allows the game to read the NFC chip found in the base of all the figurines and use this data to render the figurine as a playable character within the game.

To coincide with the release of the Trap Team game, a new line of figurines has been announced and named Trap Masters. It’s the task of the Trap Masters and the Portal Master to capture criminals in the game.

It’s been three years since the Skylanders franchise was born and Eric Hirshberg, the president and CEO of Activision Publishing has complete faith in the project. “We’re going to leap forward once again and redefine how kids play,”…”We make kids say ‘wow’ for a living. We have strived with each and every release to make kids say ‘wow’ again. The game is eventually going to support a cast of 50 new characters alongside the new Trap Masters.

Story

Following on form the events of Skylanders: Swap Force, the games foremost antagonist Kaos releases the most notorious villains in the Skylands. He does this by destroying the Cloudcracker Prison, thus freeing them of their shackles.

The player assumes the role of the Portal Master and must coordinate the Trap Masters in an effort to track, locate and recapture the now rampant villains.

Gameplay

Gameplay in Skylanders: Trap Team remains largely unchanged from its predecessors. The player assumes control over a character that has been injected into the game by way of an NFC chip reading. From there on the game is played in a third person perspective as the player navigates the stage combating enemies and solving basic platforming puzzles. As per usual some of these puzzles can only be solved by using a character of the same element.

A major difference in Trap Team and the previous titles is the inclusion of a new item. This item, The Trap, allows the player to ensnare a total of 40 enemies which can then be controlled by the player as good characters. A nice feature that has been included but has zero practical use is that when an enemy is captured by the portal, the sound transfers from the game to the portal to reflect their capture.

When playing the game in the cooperative mode, players can share trapped villains and take turns swapping in and out. However, for the sake of balance, there is a time limit on how long this character can be used, upon the timer running out this character is unavailable until its energy has been recharged. With that being said, the villains are more powerful than the players Skylanders, thus lending an element of strategy to their deployment. Saving them for tougher enemy encounters etc.

The game is planned to release on Android, iOS and Fire OS supported hardware, these versions of the game will make use of a Traptanium Portal that is connected by a bluetooth link. The game will also support optional touch controls. However, if the portal is not connected to the players device, the game offers digital versions of the characters that are stored on the device, thus allowing portable play.

Characters

Given the ever expanding roster of characters in the Skylanders, it would be impossible to list a static list of characters. This portion of the Wiki will list the announced Trap Masters and returning Skylanders.

Earlier this week Activison released new information about the game’s engine and several screenshots which you can check here.

Skylanders Trap Team promises to introduce a new roster and Trap Masters. The game will release on October 5 in North America for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii and Wii U. A different version is also under development for the 3DS.

Destiny will release across the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Call of Duty Advanced Warfare is perhaps one to watch out for. The developers have promised that they will focus on the narrative aspects of the game, so it will be interesting to see what they have in store for us later today.

New heroes and core characters to be added.

Activision has announced that a new Skylanders title will be out on October 10th in Europe. Skylanders: Trap Team will be Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Wii, Wii U and 3DS. It will introduce new Trap Masters heroes, new core characters and much more will see you continue the struggle against Kaos.

CEO of Activision Publishing Eric Hirshberg stated that, “When we created Skylanders, we invented a new category of play and, in the process, disrupted two industries – videogames and toys. With each new Skylanders game, our commitment to continuous, disruptive innovation has led to surprising and delightful new ways for kids to play with toys and games. With Skylanders Trap Team, we’re no longer just letting kids bring their toys to life inside the game anymore. This time, we’re letting them pull their toys out of the game as well. We are confident this instalment of Skylanders will once again redefine what’s possible at the intersection of the physical and virtual worlds.”

Executive VP and Chief Merchandising Officer Toys ‘R’ Us Richard Barry added that, “When Activision first introduced the Skylanders franchise in 2011, it promised to redefine play by merging the physical and digital worlds. The company delivered on that pledge with three blockbuster titles – and is now poised to do it again with the introduction of Skylanders Trap Team.

“With Skylanders Trap Team, Activision is reversing the magic of ‘toys-to-life,’ allowing kids to bring characters out of the digital world and into the physical world for the first time. We’re thrilled to continue as a marquee destination for Skylanders products, providing a comprehensive, global marketing and merchandising program, including our fully exclusive Legendary series of figures that will introduce Skylanders Trap Team to our enthusiastic customers this October.”

Skylanders: Trap Team is available for pre-order currently.
