These are some of the open-world games available on PC, and they are available at a fraction of the retail price.

Gaming can be an expensive hobby; more so with prices of games and associated hardware rising every couple of generations. That said, gaming has also become a lot more accessible thanks to online marketplaces like Steam which offer games at discounted prices. And there’s perhaps no better kind of games that offer the most bang for your buck than open-world games. To that end, here are 13 open-world games that are damn cheap right now.

Please note that these prices are US region prices sourced from Steam, and other geographical locations would obviously have different prices.

With that out of the way, let’s begin:

Just Cause 3

Avalanche Software’s Just Cause series is a literal playground of carnage and destruction, and Just Cause 3 is no different. Set against the island of Solis, players assume the role of series protagonist Rico Rodrigues as he takes on a bunch of high-stakes missions all across the map. With notable additions like weather calamities, Just Cause 3 is a worthy sequel deserving of any fan’s attention. It’s available for $20 on Steam – complete with all DLC and bonus content.

While gaming can be an expensive hobby, there are a fair number of great experiences that you can have at a fraction of the retail price.

Games, when compared to other forms of entertainment like movies and music, have a considerably higher tag with standard retail prices now being increased to $70 for many games. However, with frequent sales and the advent of Xbox Game Pass and streaming – fans can essentially have a never-ending list of games to play without having to pay a fortune for it. That said, there’s also no shortage of great games that you can get for a fraction of the retail price, and here are 15 such games.

Hollow Knight

Team Cherry’s take on the increasingly popular souls like genre has been met with great critical and commercial acclaim, and for all the right reasons. The world of Hallownest strikes a careful balance between being joyful and daunting, and in addition to this – the game has excellent art direction, music, platforming, and level. It’s a really well-rounded and complete package, which is available across all platforms at just a fraction of the cost of contemporaries.

"Definitive" is the last word you'd use to describe these games.

Ever since the release of the Xbox One and PS4, definitive editions of existing have been increasingly common. These usually include the base game with all of the DLC released thus far and since many games were making the jump between generations, it would make sense to have improved graphics. Right? Over time, the “definitive edition” tag has been used for everything from remasters with all of the content to glorified Game of the Year editions. Let’s take a look at six games which sadly weren’t all that definitive and couldn’t hide the fact.

Dishonored: Definitive Edition

Arkane Studios’ Dishonored debuted in 2012 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, and despite arriving near the end of their life-cycles, it made an impact. The stealth gameplay, multiple ways to approach missions, consequences that had far-reaching effects on the story and so on established it as an excellent game. And it was all the more impressive that Arkane could deliver such a great experience with anti-aliasing, screen space ambient occlusion and depth of field on essentially outdated hardware.

So you would think that Dishonored Definitive Edition, which launched in August 2015 for Xbox One and PS4, would be a decent step up. No one expected remade visuals or heavily revamped assets but 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second seemed a given. Unfortunately, despite launching two years after the initial game – which could hit 60 fps on more inferior PC hardware – Dishonored Definitive Edition was stuck at 30 frames per second. Image quality is better, for sure, but the large amount of FXAA blurred significant amounts of details. Texture streaming issues, the lack of anisotropic filtering and other missing visual flourishes from the PC version didn’t help.

Tons of worlds have been created over the past few years - here are the very best so far.

Open world games are a popular genre and for good reason. They offer tons of things to do and let players get lost, just experimenting with this wide open sandbox. While there have been tons of incredible open world games over the years, this generation of gaming has undoubtedly offered the best. Let’s take a look at 30 of the best open world games of the generation here, ranked from good to the very best. Starting with number 30…

Mad Max

Veering away from massive open world destruction into post-apocalyptic, vehicular exploration, Mad Max was an odd turn for Avalanche Studios. It was about upgrading your car, the Magnum Opus, and taking on convoys. It was about assaulting bases and brawling with baddies. There were the unoriginal side quests, sure, but the sheer expanse of its rolling dunes and spectacle of the vehicle combat helped Mad Max stand out.

Return to Hong Kong as Wei Shen.

The Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition Launch Trailer for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One dropped today, and it’s more or less what you expect from a launch trailer. In typical Definitive Edition trailer it shows of the key aspects of the new build of the game, enhanced shaders, higher resolution textures and the like. Were the source of the trailer given the option by YouTube, I dare say they would have shown of the new 60fps features.

But then it descends into the typical, rising note echoed by a drum beat montage of flashing scenes from the game.

If you happened to miss out on Sleeping Dogs, shame on you, the first time around, then now is the perfect time to get into the shoes of Wei Shen and haul your ass across Hong Kong, preventing and partaking in criminal activity whilst performing ridiculously cool hand to hand combat. Check it out today and let us know what you think in the comments.

Check out how Wei Shen's antics take advantage of the PS4 hardware.

It’s time to get back into the streets of Hong Kong, find something blunt or pointy (your choice) and crack some heads. As good ol’ Wei Shen, take your adventures undercover as you work your way through the ranks of the Triads while trying to keep your cop buddies happy.

If you missed it, and shame on you if you did, Sleeping Dogs is like Grand Theft Auto in Hong Kong but only with a great hand to hand combat system that when used properly lets you basically recreate an action movie of your choosing from Jet Li’s younger days.

The updated version brings not only a much crisper world with higher resolution textures and better shaders, the game also slides nicely up to golden 60 fps. Driving is probably still going to be dumb, but it’s the funny kind of dumb. By the way…did I mention you can kill your enemies with sword fish? Because that’s totally a thing. And I love it.

We've missed you, Wei Shen

The chances are good that you’ve already played United Front’s amazing open world good guy/bad guy action crime drama Sleeping Dogs. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t play the Definitive Edition, does it?

Of course it doesn’t. Sleeping Dogs was, and still is one of the best titles available on the 7th generation hardware. If you missed out on this great game or even just have a special place for it in your heart, the Definitive Edition is without a doubt the best time to step back into the shoes of our thoroughly ass kicking friend Wei Shen. Check out the latest trailer for the game above.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, while definitely a step up from the original, seems to be on par with the PC build of the original game. It will include all the previously released DLC, an art book and 1080p visuals running at 30 FPS on both the PS4 and Xbox One. It will be available on October 10th in Europe and October 14th in North America

Sleeping Dogs was a bit of a revelation when it released last generation- the open world action game with its unique setting had had some trouble during its development cycle, but it still turned out to be a great game that contributed something truly unique to the genre.

It was so good, in fact, that many have still been holding out for a sequel, so that they can return to the unique flavor of atmosphere that the game provided, hopefully with all of the issues resolved this time around. Unfortunately, it seems that as of right now, the sequel is not a thing, although the developers have expressed enthusiasm in making one.

“Right now we are totally focused on making Triad Wars as awesome as it could be,” producer Justin Bullardsaid during a recent Reddit AMA. “But we would love to continue making games in the Sleeping Dogs universe.”

Of course, the folks on Reddit weren’t exactly satisfied with that answer, which, to be honest, is a bit of a copout, so he was asked directly if fans would ever see a true sequel to Sleeping Dogs. His response? Well… “Nothing to share on that right now, but we will take every opportunity to explore this universe.”

That makes it sound like nothing is in the works, not just yet, although at least he didn’t shut the possibility down entirely. Still, though, I was so confident that this was going to be an IP that Square Enix would leverage, that the sequel was in fact in development right now. It’s a bit of a bummer. At least we still have Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition coming up.

United Front Games’ Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition will be releasing on October 10th for the PS4 and Xbox One (along with PC) and feature revamped visuals to the 2012 open world action game. Square Enix, for its part, has released a trailer to hype up the game but decided to include nothing live-action footage. It indicated at the beginning that this wasn’t really in-game footage but seriously, you’re going to tease us with 1080p resolution visuals and not even showcase the game? Check it out above.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition will also include an art book showcasing 28 pages of concept art for the making of the game and all 24 previously released DLC packs. Along with the usual graphics and audio upgrades, you can also look forward to “tuned gameplay”.

Will you be picking up Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition? Especially since it’s one of the best open world games in years despite the annoying live-action trailer above? Let us know in the comments.

Sleeping Dogs will be heading to the Xbox One and PS4, as a listing appeared on Amazon and was quickly followed by official promotional images hyping the game. Sleeping Dogs: Definite Edition will feature an official art book with 28 pages of concept art along with all of the previously released DLC (which is valued at $85).

It’s not know yet whether the game will sport updated visuals, especially since Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition features a 1080p resolution and 60 FPS frame rate on the PS4. You can also expect better textures and improved anti-aliasing but we’ll need to wait for more information from Square Enix.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition will release on October 14th on the PS4 and Xbox One. What are your thoughts on the announcement and will you be picking up Sleeping Dogs for the current-gen consoles? Would you prefer Sleeping Dogs 2 instead? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
