"It was all a dream." How about no.

We all love a good twist. Watching the seeds of a twist blossoming into an astounding revelation can lift any narrative experience- if done well, of course. Sadly, games, like any other storytelling medium, can occasionally lost the plot (literally). In this feature, we’ll be talking about twists in games that made no sense- or maybe some that did make a smidgen of sense, but blew anyway.

NOTE: Obviously, there are spoilers in this feature for every game mentioned. If you see us beginning to discuss a game you don’t want spoiled skip ahead to the next entry.

HEAVY RAIN

Heavy Rain was a legitimately great game, and a great showcase for choice and consequence mechanics and narrative-driven gameplay in Quantic Dream titles- but it wasn’t perfect, of course. The entire game revolved around the mystery of who the Origami Killer who, but it was eventually revealed that it had been Scott Shelby all along. Except that doesn’t make any sense, because we’d been playing as Scott Shelby for a huge chunk of the game, and were privy to his thoughts and inner monologues and what have you. It just came across as a poorly executed reveal.

These games are a dream come true for all hacking enthusiasts out there.

Sure, it’s a lot of fun blowing a bad guy’s head off with a close range shot from your double barrel shotgun, and yes, slicing up your enemies with slick and vicious swipes of your blade can never really get old. But this feature isn’t about those things- because sometimes in games you want to do things from the shadows, without ever really moving much more than your fingers, by diving deep into the invisible digital walls that surrounding everything and altering their structure to open completely new paths. In this feature, we’re going to take a look at fifteen games that let you do just that, and provide the player with some really enjoyable hacking mechanics.

WATCH DOGS

Of course, we’re starting with the most obvious (and by obvious, I mean publicized) choice. Watch Dogs is a game that is all about hacking. Hacking is your primary tool, and though you drive cars and shoot bad guys, hacking is ultimately what most stuff in the game centres around. From hacking into phones to extract private information on people of interest to hacking into traffic signals to turn the tide of car chases in your favour, Watch Dogs lets you do all that. It’s true that those mechanics aren’t nearly at the level that much of the game’s pre-release hype implied they would be, but all said and done, they’re still pretty solid.

These 15 characters are exactly why we have trust issues.

Can you ever really know another person? What drives you to get out of bed every morning might not mean anything to another, and the ideals of yourself don’t translate over to the truths of another quite so flawlessly. Such is what happened with the characters we’re going to explore in this list. Some of these characters transcend being characters and become people because their values cause them to turn away from the path of the player, and sometimes they never really lined up to begin with. What’s a good story without a twist or two after all? Really goes without saying, but watch out for some serious spoilers ahead.

Master Miller – Metal Gear Solid

Infiltrating deep into Shadow Moses Island was never a one man operation, since Solid Snake had help from a whole team of support. Though not all of them were what they seemed either, the point of focus here is the memorable moment in the middle of the classic tactical espionage action game where Master Miller, the one you call for gameplay tips suddenly disappears. The trick is that the antagonist of the game, Liquid Snake, had killed Master Miller before the events of the game had even began, and had infiltrated your mission from the start to see every move you made.

For the first time, Sony ports a game to mobile platforms.

Sony has announced that it has released Bentley’s Hackpack, a spin off and companion title to Sly Cooper which released on PS3 and PS Vita, on iOS and Android via the Apple App Store and Goole Play Store respectively. Though Sony had plans to release more mobile-specific games that work in conjunction with PS4 titles – such as the tie-in to Knack – this is the first time the company has ported an existing title to mobile platforms.

As of now, you can pick up Bentley’s Hackpack for free on both iOS and Android, and you’ll be able to play three different hacking mini-games originally seen in Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

If Sony were suddenly deciding to port games over to the mobile formats, how would that reflect on the future of its PS Vita handheld? We’ll find out in the coming months if more such games will be making their way out.

Sly makes his way to the current generation.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is the latest installment in the Sly Cooper franchise which began with the PS2. The one thing to note here is that Sucker Punch–the original developers of the franchise–are not developing this game, and it’s Sanzaru Games, the developers of Sly Collection, that are behind this game.

The game is available on the PS3 and PS Vita, and the experience is largely similar, but this review was done on the PS3 version. It’s a stealth platformer and stays true to the previous Sly games. The main concept of the game is to find Sly’s ancestors and as the title suggests, travel in time to do that.

My main issue with the game is that it does not innovate much to be called as a mainline game, however, it sticks to the core principles that the past games were created on. You can play as Sly’s ancestors in the each time line you find them, and all of them will be unique and have great abilities.

Sly’s friends Murray and Bentley are useful in certain situations. Murray is bulky and can power his way through enemies, while Bentley is the nerdy guy in a wheelchair who can zip past enemies and hack things. Overall, it’s what you expect from a game like this. It’s charming, fun to play, and offers you choices.

Playing as Bentley also gives you access to mini-games and depending on how much you like the six axis functionality of the DualShock 3 controller, your enjoyment of them will be decided. Personally, those additions, I feel, only tend to annoy gamers because six axis isn’t something lot of developers use nowadays considering how outdated that tech is. It can be termed as a gimmick, and there are hardly examples of it implemented interestingly in games, however, Heavenly Sword did do justice to it.

The game is accessible and rarely will you get stuck in the missions. You will easily know where to go and what to do, and platforming and hopping around roof tops is a joy. The thing that makes it enjoyable is the beautiful Cell Shaded visuals employed. The game looks much better on the PS3 than on the Vita, although, I really didn’t play the Vita version all that much.

Sneaking around enemies and pickpocketing them as Sly is very easy as well, and if you can manage to steal coins thrice you will actually be rewarded with something cool. The animations all blend in nicely to give you a great thievin’ experience that you have come to expect from this series.

You journey takes you on a lot of locations from Japan to the Wild West, and each area contains a hub where you can explore and do missions. It’s pretty straightforward, and the story isn’t confusing at all. These time related things usually tend to mess up my mind *cough*

The Vita version is available for free and the game is part of Sony’s cross buy initiative which is a good thing, but I recommend this to be played on the PS3 because it doesn’t give the same experience on Sony’s handheld, however, you can use the device as an addon for finding treasures and the likes in the PS3 version.

So why would you want to play this game? Simple. If the series is something that you have enjoyed in the PS2 days, then you should definitely take a look at it because Sly 4 stays true to the original forumla and adds some of its own, but that’s also where the game falters because it really doesn’t add much to the formula.

This game was reviewed on the PS3.

The master thief himself and the head of the Sly Gang, Sly Cooper finally gets his own vignette in the lead up to the release of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

Being one of the few games to not be designed by Sucker Punch but instead by Sanzaru Games who handled remake duties for the Sly Cooper HD Collection, Thieves in Time sees the Gang travel through different eras in history to retrieve different pages of the Thievius Raccoonus.

You’ll be able to play as Murray, Bentley, Carmelita, Sly himself and even enlist the power of his ancestors through different ages. The game may not be as critically acclaimed as other titles in the series but it still retains the series irreverent humour and style.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is published by Sony Computer Entertainment and is due to release for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita on March 29th and March 28th, respectively.

Collect things using this guide that you couldn't have otherwise.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is the latest Sly Cooper game released for the PS3 by Sanzaru Games, the developers who ported the old games to the PS3.

The game came out in the US first and is scheduled to be released in the EU today, and we have a complete guide for you showing where the unlockables and collectibles are.

It’s quite a good game based on all the reviews that have come out for it and the Vita version of the game plays similarly to the PS3 version.

The locations of all the treasures and other things are same between both versions because they are basically the same game.

Sly Cooper, together with his loyal friends Bentley and Murray, has just completed his latest heist when he is overcome by alleged amnesia and goes off with his female pal Carmelita, leaving Bentley as the keeper of the treasured Thievius Raccoonus, the Cooper family’s ancient book of master thievery.

First off, let’s take a look at all the treasure locations:

All Treasure Locations

If you collect all 12 in a given world, and you’ll repair that stage’s arcade machine in the hideout, unlocking a minigame.
There are 60 mask total. This will give you the location of each one. Before the playthrough, I collected a few on my very first run. Not realizing I was gonna do a guide for it later. I’ll still indicate where the mask is…or was.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is scheduled to launch on the PS3 in Europe on March 27, and comes out in the US today.

While the game is not made by original series creators Sucker Punch, the new developer Sanzaru Games, who have brought the PS2 Sly games to PS3 in HD remastered form, have gotten the contract from Sony to develop Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

The game will be available on PSN and retail and you also have the option of buying the PS3 version and getting the PS Vita version free via Sony’s cross buy promotion.

The pricing has also been revealed at it will cost $39.99 for the PS3 version, and the PS Vita is a bit cheaper at $29.99. The game will come out in March for Europe and a reason for the delay hasn’t been given.
