Mike Schroepfer moves up in the company after 4.5 years of service.

Bret Taylor’s loss is Mike Schroepfer’s gain as the former VP of engineering at Facebook is now the new Chief Technology Officer. According to AllThingsD, Facebook remarked that, “Mike Schroepfer’s new designation as Facebook’s CTO reflects the unique and important role he plays across the company.”

Formerly of Mozilla, Schroepfer has been with the company since August 2008. This is, of course, before the reign of Zuckerberg and when the site would go on to clock enough members to start one of the more populated nations in the world.

Schroepfer is focused on engineering, infrastructure and mobile strategy and will contribute to Facebook’s growing mobile sector business. Given how mobile ad revenue is up by 9 percent – with a large chunk of the company’s overall revenue in the quarter coming from advertisements – we’d say he has quite the task ahead to make it even better.

Either that, or he’ll be just fine.

Patrick O’Luanaigh, CEO of nDreams- the guy who developed Xi, the alternate reality game in Home, the online life simulator exclusive to the Playstation 3- says Home has a lot of potential, and that Facebook and iPod as means of casual gaming will soon be a thing of the past, and that people will come to realize that Home is not just about chatting, interacting with other players online, apartments and clothes, but much, much more.

“Home can be a game development platform in its own right,” he said. “People will soon realise it’s not just about chatting and apartments and clothing … it’s about creating great experiences online that are different. And Home is brilliant at online stuff because it’s built right in.”
