Following the final content update in 2023, Sega may be preparing a new version of the successful open zone 3D platformer.

With Sega confirmed to be attending tomorrow’s Xbox Partner Preview showcase, it’s interesting to note that Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition has been rated by South Korea’s GRAC. As discovered by Gematsu, it was seemingly approved last month.

Of course, neither Sega nor Sonic Team has officially confirmed this, nor have they hinted that a Definitive Edition was in the works. After launching in November 2022 for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch, the 3D platformer received three major free updates in 2023, including The Final Horizon, which added nine new Cyber Space levels and a new challenging final boss.

Aside from potentially offering new content, this could mark the title’s debut on Nintendo Switch 2. Time will tell, but an announcement tomorrow wouldn’t be surprising.

Sonic Frontiers is far from the only major success that the franchise has seen in recent years, with Sonic X Shadow Generations launching in 2024 and going on to sell over two million units. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds was released last year and sold over one million units relatively quickly, but Sega Sammy CFO Koichi Fukuzawa says it fell short of internal projections.

It continues to receive updates, though, with Mega Man out today for paying players. Goro Majima from Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and Red from Angry Birds will be added for free in April, followed by Puyo Puyo’s Arle in May.

It was recently reported that the platformer's total launch week sales in the UK were over 20 percent higher than Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart's.

Astro Bot has got off to a solid start in the UK, with launch week sales exceeding what Sony’s last major platformer – Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart – enjoyed upon its release in 2021 by 21 percent. GamesIndustry’s Christopher Dring has provided further details on how the widely acclaimed title is doing in comparison to other major recent platformers, based on data provided by the GSD.

After reiterating that Astro Bot’s launch sales are “good” and that, based on the sort of game that it is, it will likely continue to “sell over time”, Dring offered further tidbits to illustrate how well the game is doing. Apparently, Astro Bot’s launch week sales in the UK are higher than what other major platformers like Sonic Frontiers and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time managed when they released. Both of those, unlike the PS5-exclusive Astro Bot, were multiplatform titles.

How well Astro Bot will end up selling worldwide in the long run remains to be seen, but based on the start that it has got off to, the critical reception that it has enjoyed, and the strong word of mouth, one would assume that the game will do well enough for itself on the commercial front.

Astro Bot is available on PS5. Read our review of the game through here.

Sega is working on a direct sequel to the 2022 3D platformer Sonic Frontiers, it's been claimed, though it may not necessarily be called Sonic Frontiers 2.

Since before Sonic Frontiers even launched, Sega made it abundantly clear that future instalments in the franchise would be building on the foundations laid down by the open world platformer, and with Frontiers having sold as well as it did, it’s safe to assume that the company is probably sticking to those plans. In fact, a direct sequel to Sonic Frontiers seems to be in development.

That’s as per known leaker Daniel Richtman, who has claimed that Sonic Frontiers 2 is in the works. Meanwhile, prominent Sega leaker Midori has also corroborated the leak, though she adds that while the title is a sequel to Sonic Frontiers in terms of its gameplay style and structure, it may not necessarily end up being called Sonic Frontiers 2. The original Frontiers, for instance, was called Sonic Rangers until pretty close to its official announcement.

When Sega might officially announce this remains to be seen, especially with the company having no shortage of Sonic-related releases in the pipeline as it is. Sonic X Shadow Generations is due out sometime this Fall, while the film Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (which will star Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog) is set to release this December.

Sega of America boss Shuji Utsumi spoke about the company building off the success of recent Sonic the Hedgehog titles.

During The Game Awards 2023, Sega announced its plans to revive quite a few of its classic franchises, including Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio. In the press release announcing the revivals, Sega has revealed that the company has felt emboldened to bring back its legacy franchises thanks to the recent successes it has seen with Sonic the Hedgehog.

“In recent years, Sonic the Hedgehog has forged new paths for Sega, bringing the franchise to life and reaching new audiences in ways we had only dreamed of in the past,” said Co-COO of Sega Corporation and CEO of Sega of America Shuji Utsumi. “Building off that success, we are digging into our legacy and reimagining several franchises to bring these games to more audiences around the globe.”

Utsumi’s statement goes on to talk about how this is only the beginning for Sega.

“Today’s announcement is just the start of our initiative. First and foremost, our ambition will be to create great games with memorable characters and worlds. We hope fans of all ages will look towards our future with anticipation as we release these projects in the coming years.”

During its announcement at The Game Awards 2023, Sega confirmed that new games in the Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi are in development. The studio also announced new games for even older franchises, including Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and Golden Axe.

Sega recently released Sonic Superstars, which it had described as a new take on the classic 2D Sonic formula. Released back in October, Sonic Superstars has seemingly seen a weaker start than Sega had anticipated. Previously, the company had released Sonic Frontiers, which was quite successful and saw a host of content being released through post-launch updates.

The final update for Sonic Frontiers brings with it new story content, as well as new playable characters in the form of Amy, Knuckles and Tails.

The final update for Sonic Frontiers, dubbed Final Horizon, is out now. The update, available for free, brings a host of new content to the game, and is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

As part of the Final Horizon update, Sonic Frontiers now has more story content leading up to the final battle on Ouranos Island. Sonic, with the help of Sage and Dr. Eggman, kicks off a new plan to convert the Cyber Corruption into a new source of previously-untapped power.

Sonic isn’t in this alone, however, as Amy, Knuckles and Tails will be playable in the game as well. The trio will have their own set of objectives revolving around the search for the Chaos Emeralds.

Leading up to its release, the update got a trailer yesterday showing off its story and some of the gameplay for the Sonic’s trio of friends. The story was also teased through an animated trailer released earlier this month.

Check out the final trailer before the last update for Sonic Frontiers hits your platform of choice later today.

Sega has released a new trailer for the final major planned update for Sonic Frontiers, dubbed the Final Horizon. The trailer sees the main characters discussing their plan of action, with Sonic himself deciding to take on the four towers of the masters, while is friends look for the Chaos Emeralds. Check out the trailer below.

The trailer for the Final Horizon trailer also gives us a look at what we can expect from the update in terms of gameplay and levels. It shows off quite a bit of unique new content, likely designed to put all of Sonic’s skills to the test. The trailer also gives us a look at the gameplay for Sonic’s friends Amy, Tails, and Knuckles.

It teases the stories of Knuckles, Amy Rose and Tails while Sage talks of an outcome that she previously hadn't unconsidered.

Sega’s last free DLC for Sonic Frontiers arrives on September 28th with The Final Horizon. It adds new playable characters with Amy Rose, Knuckles and Tails, and a new story. There are also more challenges to overcome. In the meantime, there’s a sleek new trailer for players to check out.

It teases some of the motives for each character. Amy talks to several Koco to find the location of the Chaos Emeralds. Knuckles battles enemies on the first island, and Tails is seemingly becoming more corrupted when interacting with Cyberspace. Of course, it’s not long before the three unite with Sonic as Sage speaks about an outcome she hadn’t previously considered.

Stay tuned for more details on the update when it goes live in the coming weeks. Sonic Frontiers is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch. Check out our review here. As of May 8th, it’s topped 3.5 million units in sales.

Future 2D Sonic games may not go back to the pixel art style we last saw with Sonic Mania Plus, according to the producer of Sonic Superstars.

Sonic Team head and producer of the upcoming Sonic Superstars, Takashi Iizuka, believes that pixel art may not be the best art style for the future of the Sonic franchise. This might mean that, while we’ll get 2D Sonic games in the future, we might not get a direct sequel to Sonic Mania any time soon.

Speaking to GamesRadar, Iizuka spoke about how it is important for the Sonic franchise to have both 3D games as well as traditional side-scrolling 2D games like the upcoming Sonic Superstars.

“When we talk about the brand, we definitely need to have a modern Sonic 3D game,” Iizuka said. “We also feel we need to have a classic Sonic 2D game. Those are our fundamental pillars that we need to have. We’re expanding into movies and TV, but we still need to have both the 3D and the 2D line up for our gaming audience.”

Iizuka goes on to talk about how Sonic Frontiers is expanding on the Sonic franchise’s 3D platformer ambitions through the use of its open zone concept.

“Last year we released Sonic Frontiers, and what Sonic Frontiers was doing is taking the open zone concept, to cement that 3D Sonic gameplay, as something we can build on for the next 10-20 years to continue bringing new gameplay experiences to players,” continued Iizuka. “It was really the evolution of where the 3D Sonic space was going, and we feel very proud in what the team was able to deliver.”

Iizuka continues talking about the art style of pixel art Sonic Mania—a critical and commercial success when it was released back in 2017. Iizuka continues, stating that the franchise might need to make use of more modern art styles to stay relevant 10-20 years into the future.

Iizuka says, “we look at the pixel art – it’s great – but when we think about 10-20 years in the future, we don’t think it’s going to be a viable art style or presentation for our players. And in order to advance and really step things up, we did want to make sure that we’re presenting something that 10-20 years down the road we’re still evolving and creating new content for.”

Sonic Superstars, slated for release on October 17 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch, will make use of a 3D art style, while still keeping to traditional 2D gameplay. The game will also feature co-op for up to four players, with each player taking on the role of a different character and making use of their unique abilities.

On the 3D Sonic front, Sonic Frontiers recently got a trailer showing off its final update, dubbed the Final Horizon update. The update will bring with it new playable characters, as well as a new story.
