Sonic Mania may be a $20 game (so no Platinum! Although Xbox players do get 1000G if they get all the Achievements), but it has some seriously difficult Achievements/Trophies nonetheless. There are only 18 of them, but you’re probably going to end up spending way too long trying to get them all. In this guide, we list these out, and where possible, also include videos so you know exactly what to do.

There are multiple special stages hidden and strewn across all of Sonic Mania, tucked away in crevices and out of the way corners in many of the game’s stages. Finding them all is a pain- especially since you don’t even know which stages will have them.

And yet, if you find them and beat them all, you get Super Sonic- so of course, it’s worth trying to find them, right? But how? How do you find all seven Sonic Mania Special Stages?

That’s where this guide comes in- the video below shows you where you can find all seven of the stages (for the seven Chaos Emeralds) in the game. Keep some things in mind:

• You only get one attempt at a special stage per your attempt at the stage it is hidden in- that is to say, if you fail to clear the special stage, you will have to redo the entire larger level it is hidden in from the start, find it, and initiate it again. Be very careful!
• Remember to use either the Level Selector or Time Trials to be able to jump to the stage you want and get the Chaos Emeralds.

Sonic Mania has multiple fantastic levels, some old, some new spins on older ones, and some all new- but you aren’t done with them just because you finished playing them. You can go back and play them at will, any time, thanks to the secret level selector in the game.

This level selector exists in addition to one that will show up after you complete Green Hill Zone Act 2, at which point you have the choice to go back and replay any level you have already completed to participate in time trials. This one, you access via nifty cheats.

NINTENDO SWITCH

• On the main menu, press down while holding B and Y
• You get the message ‘Press any button to start’. KEEP THE B AND Y BUTTONS PRESSED.
• KEEP THE B AND Y BUTTONS PRESSED, and press ‘Start’ (the + button on the Switch), and the level selector appears. All levels in the game are selectable this way

PS4 AND XBOX ONE

• Highlight the No Save file in Mania mode.
• Then press Square + Option buttons on PS4 or X + Menu buttons on Xbox One.

Sonic Mania is the unlikeliest success story of the year- after years of crippling mediocrity, Sega’s once world conquering mascot, the speedy blue blur Sonic the Hedgehog returns in a game that harkens back to his 16-bit glory days, and delivers the kind of platforming experience that the series has consistently failed to deliver on since the Genesis days.

With the great platforming come the kind of memorable boss battles that the franchise came to be known for- there are actually a lot of them, and every single one of them is memorable in their own way. They’re generally easy, and shouldn’t take you too long to take down once you figure out what exactly you should be doing- but that is the part that can take a while.
