"Disappointment" doesn't begin to describe it.

Just because a game looks promising in its pre-launch buildup doesn’t mean things are actually going to shake out that way. That’s a lesson that we’ve learned on more than a few occasions over the years, with the list of games that have looked promising at first only to end up disappointing being a long one. Here, we’re going to talk about a few games that did just that.

LAIR

An obvious pick for a list such as this one, Lair is forever going to hold the dubious crown of being one of the most bitter disappointments in gaming. Factor 5’s excellent track record and promising pre-launch showings suggested that Lair was going to be a huge early PS3 hit, but upon its release, the game turned out to be sort of a broken mess, thanks in large part to its frustrating motion-heavy controls. Even now, close to two decades later, it’s hard to get over the disappointment that was Lair.

For all of its brilliant games, Sega has had its fair share of screw-ups over the decades.

You might know Sega today for the Yakuza series, Sonic the Hedgehog, Valkyria Chronicles and as a publisher for several strategy franchises like Total War and the Endless series. However, Sega was a major hardware and software powerhouse at one point, competing with the likes of Nintendo for years. It made a number of mistakes along the way which resulted in its current state. So let’s take a look at the 10 biggest mistakes that Sega probably wants you to forget.

Sega 32X

Releasing an add-on for the Sega Genesis that would allow for playing 32-bit titles – what could possibly go wrong? As it turns out with the Sega 32X, everything. The idea seemed fairly optimistic but maybe the 32X would find a niche for those willing to invest in it. As it turns out, Sega ruined that promise as well, both because of the rush to release it and from the announcement of the Sega Saturn which would present “true” 32-bit gaming, that too with CD-ROMs. Because the add-on was rushed, there weren’t nearly enough games and it failed to attract developers when more appealing consoles were on the horizon.

No matter how good or bad these games are, their AI leaves much to be desired.

For all of the great enemies that we’ve faced in gaming history – from the Marines in Half Life to the Replicants in F.E.A.R. – there are some that are simply dumb. We’re talking dumb as doorknobs and half as useful. We may never know why some enemy AI is so gosh-darn horrible but it’s still funny to witness. Let’s take a look at 14 games with terrible AI.

Days Gone

While the Freaker Hordes tend to be powerful threats, many of the Bandits in Days Gone are just dumb. It’s extremely easy to sneak up and kill them within a few feet of their allies without causing a stir. You can murder heaps of enemies from a bush simply because the others fail to react when one goes down. To think that these stray humans managed to survive when the Freakers are clearly smarter.

The PlayStation 3 has had a number of classics but these games scrape the bottom of the barrel.

The PlayStation 3 era is remembered with fondness, even with all the trials and tribulations the console faced at the beginning. While we look back on classics like Uncharted, The Last of Us, Resistance, Killzone and so on, let’s not forget some of the terrible games that also released.

Haze

Haze should have had it all. It was developed by the team behind TimeSplitters, backed by a large publisher in Ubisoft and one of the key exclusives for the PlayStation 3. Lo and behold, this epic single-player shooter was simply a mess of glitches, bland visuals, terrible writing, boring gameplay, dumb AI, and so on. It’s a shame too because the premise was genuinely interesting.

What prompted some of these titles to release without being completed? Find out here.

Video games don’t always get happy endings. Sometimes, they don’t get any ending as their overall quality feels rushed in some places and incomplete in others. Granted, not every game had the resources or time to assure certain features, much less crucial story elements, were in place.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

When Hideo Kojima was rumoured to be leaving Konami, there was widespread controversy about the company’s treatment of him and the fate of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. At launch, The Phantom Pain was beloved by critics and generated massive amounts of sales. However, hardcore fans expressed their disdain over the ending and overall story. The biggest evidence of the game’s unfinished state, however, was the missing Chapter 3 and Mission 51. Though the game’s ending was in Mission 46, Mission 51 was included as special non-playable story content…in the collector’s edition. Konami clarified that the content was cancelled before being finished but the sequence of events and their impact on the overall lore left many fans angered. Unfortunately, the game didn’t receive any post-launch DLC either to help patch in the gaps.

Either you're going nowhere fast or waiting for Daikatana to load. Behold other similar horrors.

Have you ever had that feeling of going nowhere? Like you’re glued to a single spot and can’t do anything? While video games don’t present such deep-seated metaphysical issues, they do have long loading times that will push you to the edge.

Of course, we’re not just talking about a single loading screen that stretches for too long. This can also apply to a game that simply bombards you with loading screens at every turn, adding up to an experience that’s more loading than actual gameplay. Let’s take a look at 15 such games that are notorious for this. And remember: They may or may not have been patched since release so beware.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3

One of the most recent examples of horrid loading times is CI Games’ Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3. The game was criticized for taking an inordinate amount of time to even load the first level. Eurogamer showcased how it’s possible to complete one race in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, some speedruns in Gone Home and casual Pokemon GO in the time it takes to load one level in Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3.

Games are meant to be fun. They’re also meant to be challenging. Heck, at times they can be hard as well, nudging you towards a larger amount of challenges as you may so desire to complete. And then there are games who’s very foundation is built on challenging gameplay. Those are the games for the hardcore. But then there are other games – the games that outright hate you.

These games are built to frustrate you. They’re built to make you seethe deep down and outright hate playing games in general. There are perhaps hundreds of games out there built specifically to irritate people and it’s crazy how some of the most popular games weren’t meant to be difficult to begin with. Games like The Unfair Platformer and Give Up though? What the hell?. Check out our picks for the top 15 most frustrating games you will ever play.

QWOP

QWOP is a funny game that stops being funny all too soon. You play as a track racer representing a fictional country that can only be controlled via four keys. Q and W control your right and left thighs while O and P control your right and left legs. Or maybe it’s the other way around, then inverted and reversed.
