Domestic earnings crossed $187 million, while the international box office gross crossed $100 million (becoming the fastest movie in the series to reach that total). Shortly after the third movie’s release, Paramount confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is in the works and will arrive sometime in 2027. Though casting has yet to be announced, Jim Carrey (who plays Dr. Robotnik) said he’s open to returning.

On the gaming side, Sonic x Shadow Generations has been a big hit for Sega, selling over 1.5 million units in less than a month. Sega also recently announced Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds with Shadow joining the roster, though further details have yet to be revealed.

Sonic, Knuckles and Tails work together stop them but must eventually seek help from recurring humans Tom and Maddie. Space Colony ARK (at least, what seems to be the station from Sonic Adventure 2) and its giant laser make an impact, and Shadow finally gets to wield a gun.

How the team will ultimately best Shadow and stop his plan remains to be seen, but there are plenty of intense fights and set pieces to look forward to. The titular speedster returns, of course, and is accompanied by all of his familiar allies, including Tails and Knuckles. This time, however, he faces a larger threat than ever in the form of the Ultimate Lifeform- Shadow the Hedgehog, an experiment gone wrong who’s now ready to kick some serious butt. As suggested by prior leaks, Shadow is indeed being voiced by Keanu Reeves. 

To counter Shadow’s threat, Sonic and co will bring the villainous Dr. Robotnik (played by Jim Carrie again) out of retirement, hoping to form an uneasy alliance with him- and it looks like things are going to get suitably chaotic as a result. Check out the trailer below. 

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will release in theaters worldwide on December 20. 

As per a report published by The Hollywood Reporter, The Matrix and John Wick star Keanu Reeves is voicing Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The product of a secret government program called Project Shadow and the brainchild of the franchise’s archvillain Dr. Robotnik (played by Jim Carrey), Shadow’s portrayal in the film will take cues from the aforementioned Sonic Adventure 2 and 2005’s Shadow the Hedgehog, as previously confirmed.

Shadow also have Sonic X Shadow Generations to look forward to later this year, an expanded remaster of the acclaimed 2011 platformer that will feature a new, standalone campaign featuring the infamous Black Blur.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which recently wrapped filming, will release worldwide on December 20. It will be preceded by Knuckles, a six-episode limited series premiering later this month, on April 26, on Paramount+. It sees Edris Elba reprising his role as the titular protagonist.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will see Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles returning for another adventure, with Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik once again starring as the antagonist. Meanwhile, as teased in Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s post-credits scene, Shadow the Hedgehog will also have an important role to play, with the movie drawing inspiration from 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2, and 2005’s Shadow the Hedgehog. 

Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s worldwide theatrical release is set for December 20. Meanwhile, under a month from now, on April 26, the six-episode miniseries Knuckles will also be premiering on Paramount+.

The third movie was originally announced earlier this year. Alongside the movie, Sega CEO Haruki Satomi also announced that there would be a live-action series based on Knuckles, set for release some time in 2023.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog got its fair share of criticism when an early trailer was released, but the movie was eventually released to a warm reception, prompting the production of a sequel released earlier this year, and a third movie we just got the release date for.

On the video game side of things, Sega is gearing up for the release of Sonic Frontiers, which is set for release some time this year. Details about Sonic Frontiers have been appearing all over the place, with the most recent ones revolving around some of Sonic’s unlockable abilities in the upcoming “open zone” game.
