Everything you need to know about Deep Down.

Deep Down (title yet to be finalized)is an upcoming and highly anticipated free to play action role playing game that is currently in development by Capcom, the same company that develops the Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and Street Fighter series of games, the title is being jointly developed alongside by the Japanese Studio of Sony Computer Entertainment who are currently developing Bloodborne with From Software and Gravity Rush 2 with Project Siren.

Deep Down, which is running on the internally developed Panta Rhei Engine which is developed for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U, is slated to be published by Capcom and released exclusively on Sony’s PlayStation 4. While there is no official release date, the game is expected to arrive at some time in 2014.

3. Story

Development

One of the most important announcements to be made alongside the actual announcement of the game, was the unveiling of the Panta Rhei engine that was internally developed by Capcom to power their games on 8th generation hardware such as the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Wii U. The Panta Rhei engine will be replacing the MT Framework which powered Resident Evil 6 and Dragons Dogma.

When Sony hosted their reveal event to first show the PlayStation 4, Capcom video game producer and respected industry name Yoshinori Ono (Street Fighter franchise) came onto the stage and announced Deep Down, he followed this by speaking about Panta Rhei (translated it means “Everything Flows”) and saying that it “allow us to take game design in entirely new directions”.

The grim high-fantasy themed game sported the tagline “Conquer Your Fear or Die a Coward.” This was coupled with the reveal trailer showing a armoured warrior hiding from a fire breathing dragon before mustering his courage and charging. Taking development in a new direction, the decision to make Deep Down was based in not wanting to be limited by the expectations of a currently existing IP.

Players familiar with Resident Evil would expect a Resident Evil-esque experience, the same goes for Street Fighter and Monster Hunter players. So creating a new IP gave the developer space to experiment with the new hardware while building a new and exciting game. “We wanted to be free to utilise the PS4’s hardware capabilities and unique services without the constraints of working within an existing IP”, speaking about the power of the new hardware, Ono said “The real-time capabilities of the hardware allowed us to produce the Deep Down demonstration you saw at the conference in a relatively short amount of time.”

Gameplay

Deep Down’s gameplay is based around a Dungeon Crawler type system of discovering artefacts and travelling to new locations that must in turn be explored and conquered. Discovered artefacts help the player gather memories which they can then access to play through missions. When traversing these dungeon like areas, players can band together into parties of warriors and they can even team up to tackle boss characters together.

Players can make use of a litany of weapons that includes spears, shields, torches and swords, these weapons will be essential to guarantee your survival.

Deep Down opens with the player in a near future New York apartment in the year 2094, as they explore the game world the player can touch and interact with a number of magical artefacts. Using these artefacts players can draw out memories that allow them to travel into the long forgotten past of years gone by where they can explore a number of dungeons and do battle with fierce and powerful monsters like fire breathing dragons while they band together with their friends and seek out treasures and loot. The New York apartment is managed and ran by an AI that calls itself Odette.

Bloodborne is an upcoming action adventure role playing video game that is currently in development under From Software, the developers of the critically acclaimed Souls series and the niche hit series Armored Core. The game is being co developed by Sony Computer Entertainments Japan Studio who are also working on the PS4 exclusive, Deep Down in conjunction with Capcom.

Bloodborne is set to be published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Leading the development as Director is Hidetaka Miyazaki (President of From Software) who found fame with his works, Dark Souls and to a lesser extent, Demon’s Souls. Bloodborne is currently slated to release at some time in 2015 exclusively on the PlayStation 4 at retail and via digital download on the PlayStation Network.

Bloodborne was first publicly announced during E3 2014 during the Sony press conference; the reveal came in the form of a trailer that showed the games setting, an old city called Yharnam. Despite being publicly announced at E3 2014, the game was actually leaked a number of weeks before the show under the project name, Project Beast.

Initiallu Project Beast was assumed to be set in a more modern setting. The leaked videos showed it to be pretty Gothic with the protagonist wielding a shotgun. The video also showcased fog-gates, undead enemies and the usual dark setting found in the Souls series. Initially believed to be a hoax, the theory was quickly debunked by the Sony presentation at E3 2014.

Gameplay

There is yet to be any information given regarding the combat aspect of Bloodborne, however Playstation.com does give some insight into the gameplay, saying “Journey to a horror-filled gothic city where deranged mobs and nightmarish creatures lurk around every corner.” The site continues to talk about “Strategic Action Combat”, a phrase most often resereved for games like Devil May Cry. The player will be armed with a wide array of weapons ranging from conventional firearms all the way up to Saw Cleavers.

Story

Bloodborne is set in the abandoned, ancient and seemingly dilapidated city of Yharnam. In it’s glory days, Yharnam was best known for housing a mysterious medical remedy that would see travellers from far across the land while seeking the cure that would cure whichever malady ails them.

However, when the player reaches the city of Yharnam it’s soon discovered that the cities populace has been savaged by a terrible curse that has turned the inhabitants almost wholly and outwardly violent. Navigating these streets and combating the foes that hunt your steps, the player must survive.

More (above average) software is all that's needed now to ensure success.

Following the recent price cut for the Playstation Vita, SCEJ president Hiroshi Kawano spoke to Famitsu (translated by Polygon) about the rationale behind the same.

“The biggest reason [for the price drop] is that we simply want to have more people playing the PS Vita. Based on our research, there are two broad reasons why people who may want to try the Vita aren’t purchasing it. One, they want to wait until there’s a game they want to play on it. Two, the price is a little out of reach for them.

“Certainly, at the present time, maybe we’re a little behind the numbers we originally pictured. I feel we have a ways to go in terms of getting across the good traits of the PS Vita, along with everything the software has to offer.

“Also, I want to keep pushing for more games that people want to play, since like our research showed, that’s one thing blocking customers curious about the Vita from making a purchase.”

Sony will “be actively on the offensive in 2013”; hopefully this lead to a chance in the Vita’s fortunes.

It was announced for Sony Japan's upcoming World Game Project Fes Vol. 3.

Grasshopper Manufacture and Suda 51 are odd folks but they possess a fair degree of infamy. Which is why it’s odd that a game from them like Black Knight Sword, developed along with Digital Reality would so easily slip through the cracks leading up to it’s release. Previously announced at last year’s Tokyo Game Show, it’s recently come to light that it will now be playable at Sony Japan’s upcoming World Game Project Fes Vol. 3, happening on November 23rd according to Siliconera.

The festival is a means of promoting Western games in Japan, and since Digital Reality is a Hungarian company, it’s on the role call.

Black Knight Sword has been billed as “a side-scrolling hack and slasher with a hefty dose of platforming, and oodles of blood and gore” with “cardboard cutout enemies and pop-up scenery all unfolding behind a red curtain on the stage of the game’s weird puppet theatre”.

Sounds a lot like Sony’s upcoming Puppeteer. Check out the trailer below and judge for yourself.

After unveiling Puppeteer, a new platforming game from SCEJ, at GamesCom 2012, Sony showcased a small trailer explaining the premise.

Essentially, you play as a headless puppet with magical scissors looking to find your head and retrieve your soul where all the world really is a stage. As in, shifting constantly and seemingly layered, one curtain upon the other.

We’re down with that, especially on the Playstation 3. More details to come.

In this ad, Sony likens the Playstation 3 HD remastered games like Okami, Yakuza 1&2, Zone of the Enders and Ratchet to, well, putting on a new layer of make-up.

Though unlike makeup, the new remastered HD helps to bring out the beauty of the classics rather than mask their true looks. Opinions aside, take a look to see how the comparisons pan out.
