Sony Pictures announced this at CinemaCon 2026, where it had also announced an animated adaptation of PS4 classic Bloodborne.

In a quick update during CinemaCon 2026, Sony Pictures has revealed that the live-action movie adaptation of The Legend of Zelda has completed filming, as caught by IGN. In the process, the company has also reiterated the planned May 7th, 2027, theatrical release date for the film.

The Legend of Zelda movie will feature Bo Bragason in the role of Zelda, while Link will be played by Evan Ainsworth. Nintendo revealed these details back in July 2025 with a message from The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

“This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san,” wrote Miyamoto on social media. “I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience.”

The film’s production features Wes Bell serving as director, with Miyamoto as the producer. Bell is known for his work on a number of successful films, like the Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, among others.

While not too many details about the movie have been revealed so far, Nintendo has released a few photos, giving us our first look at the production, featuring Bragason and Ainsworth in their respective roles. There have also been indications of Severance’s Dichen Lachman having been cast in the role of Impa.

Nintendo had confirmed that it was working with Sony Pictures for the live-action movie back in November 2023, with the latter handling most of the production work and the former focusing on the production of video content for the movie.

A report from April 2025 has indicated that this film might just be the first one as part of a planned trilogy. Along with this, a narrative summary of its story was also discovered, which also confirmed some of the main story beats, including the fact that Ganon will be the main antagonist and that the Triforce will be present in some form.

“The Legend of Zelda follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness,” reads the summary. “The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce—an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.”

In the meantime, Sony Pictures has also confirmed that it is working on an animated adaptation of PS4 classic action RPG Bloodborne. The production includes PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation, and Seán McLoughlin, who is better known by his YouTube and Twitch persona JackSepticEye. While no other details have been revealed about the animated project just yet, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group president Sanford Panitch has noted that it will be “very true” to the spirit of Bloodborne.

While Nintendo has released these photos, the company hasn't yet confirmed the casting for iconic characters like Ganondorf.

While the live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda has kicked off production, Nintendo has released the first few photos to showcase what it will look like. The photos, which can be seen below, give us our first official look at Zelda – played by Bo Bragason – and Link – played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth – in full costume.

For the time being, Nintendo hasn’t revealed any other character or actor involved in the live action movie The Legend of Zelda. Rumours, however, have indicated that Dichen Lachman of Severance fame has also been cast in the movie, taking on the role of Zelda’s trusty aide Impa.

Nintendo had confirmed that Bragason and Ainsworth would be playing Zelda and Link respectively through a social media post from back in July. The post, made by The Legend of Zelda creator Shiegru Miyamoto, who also went on to reaffirm the May 7, 2027 theatrical release date for the film.

On the production side of things, directorial duties on The Legend of Zelda are being handled by Wes Bell, with Miyamoto taking on the producer role. Bell has previously worked on a host of successful major films, including the Maze Runner trilogy as well as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

The movie was first confirmed back in November 2023, where it was revealed that Nintendo was working with Sony Pictures for the adaptation. As part of the deal, Sony Pictures is taking on most of the production work, while Nintendo will be handling the production of video content for the movie itself.

There has been little in the way of details revealed for The Legend of Zelda, but rumours from back in April have indicated that the film is slated to be the first as part of a planned trilogy. A narrative summary of the film was also revealed, which confirmed that it would cover all the major story beats that The Legend of Zelda games are typically known for, like Ganon being the main antagonist, the presence of the Triforce, and Link needing to solve intricate puzzles and explore treacherous dungeons to find sacred artifacts that can help him.

Nintendo has unveiled some of the casting for the upcoming live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. In a post on social media, The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto has announced that the role of Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason, and Link will be played by Evan Ainsworth.

Along with confirming the casting, Miyamoto has also reaffirmed the May 7, 2027 theatrical release date for The Legend of Zelda. However, no other details have been revealed so far.

“This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san,” wrote Miyamoto on social media. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen. “The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience.”

Originally slated for a March 2027 release, Nintendo had announced that the live action movie’s theatrical release would be getting pushed back to May. In a social media post, Miyamoto wrote that the cause for the delay came down to “production reasons”.

“It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be,” he wrote.

The Legend of Zelda’s live action film adaptation is being helmed by Wes Bell as director, along with Miyamoto as producer. Bell is known for having worked on the Maze Runner film trilogy, as well as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Nintendo was confirmed to have been working with Sony Pictures for a live action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda back in November 2023. While the company is working with Sony Pictures for most of the production work, it has also stated that it will be handling the production of visual content for the movie itself.

While no other details about The Legend of Zelda live action film have been revealed so far, a report from back in April indicates that there are plans to have a full trilogy of films made. The report comes courtesy of tracking data by Production Line, which indicates that three movies are set to be produced together between November 2025 to April 2026.

Production Line has also included a brief summary of what the film’s plot will involve, which indicates that the story will be staying fairly close to the plot of the original The Legend of Zelda on NES.

The entire trilogy is reportedly set to be produced together in New Zealand from November 2025 to April 2027.

Nintendo and Sony Pictures have remained awfully tight-lipped about their planned live action Legend of Zelda film since announcing it in late 2023, but new details seem to have emerged nonetheless.

Production Line – a production tracking website operated by the Film and Television Industry Alliance – reports that production on a planned trilogy of live action The Legend of Zelda films is set to begin later this year. The three movies will seemingly be produced together, with production scheduled to run from November 2025 to April 2026.

Interestingly, a brief narrative summary of the project is also provided, suggesting that the movie’s story will feature a number of elements that series fans will find familiar, including the Triforce, dungeons, and more.

The summary reads, “The Legend of Zelda follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness. The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce—an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.”

The Legend of Zelda movie is being directed by Wes Bell (Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) with series creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad (Spider-Man, Venom, X-Men, Uncharted) serving as producers. As Nintendo recently announced, the movie will release worldwide on March 26, 2027.

The movie is being co-produced by Nintendo and Sony Pictures, and directed by Wes Bell of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes fame.

Nintendo announced in November 2023 that it was teaming up with Sony Pictures to work on a live action movie based on The Legend of Zelda. We now know exactly when that movie is going to release.

Taking to the recently released first-party news app Nintendo Today (caught by VGC), the company announced that The Legend of Zelda will release in theaters worldwide a couple of years from now, on March 26, 2027.

As previously announced, the Legend of Zelda live action film is set to be directed by Wes Bell of Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes fame. Avi Arad, best known for his work on Spider-Man, X-Men, Venom, Uncharted, and more, is also attached as producer.

Further details on the movie – such as casting or story details – are currently unknown, but it hopefully won’t be too long before that information begins trickling through. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

Sony is seemingly capitalizing on the blockbuster success of Helldivers 2, though its release window is currently unknown.

If it wasn’t enough that an anime for Ghost of Tsushima is in the works, Sony also announced at CES 2025 that Helldivers is getting a motion picture. According to The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley, it’s produced by Sony Pictures, though further details – like the plot and casting – have yet to be revealed.

As out of left field as the announcement may initially seem, it makes perfect sense given the success of Arrowhead’s Helldivers 2. Launched in February 2024, it became the fastest-selling title of all time for PlayStation, crossing 15 million players in November. It would subsequently become one of the top-selling games of 2024 on Steam.

Helldivers 2 has received numerous updates in December, the latest adding the Illuminate and a collaboration with Killzone. The latter met with backlash over its pricing, prompting Arrowhead to distribute the second half of its content for free. Stay tuned for more details on the movie in the future.

Wes Bell says he wants the Zelda movie to be "this awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn’t like Lord of the Rings, it’s its own thing."

Nintendo announced last month that it was working with Sony Pictures to develop a live-action film based on its Legend of Zelda franchise, with Wes Bell – director of the Maze Runner films and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes – set to direct the film. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bell has now offered some tidbits on what vision he has in mind for the movie.

Zelda fans have long been hoping for an animated movie in the style of Studio Ghibli and legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s masterworks (if not a movie by Studio Ghibli itself), and though that’s not what the live-action movie is going to be, its director wants it to be a close enough approximation of that.

Bell says he wants the Zelda movie to be “this awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn’t like Lord of the Rings, it’s its own thing. I’ve always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that.”

And how does he plan to do that? Through eye-catching use of motion capture similar to the Avatar films, it seems. When asked about a tweet he published in 2010 where he opined that an Avatar-esque Zelda movie should be made, Bell said, “I had forgotten I’d even done it. Someone dug it up [after Ball was announced as the Zelda director] and they put it out there. I was like, oh yeah, cool, that makes sense. James Cameron’s one of the guys I look up to in terms of movies. He’s able to do big, giant spectacle, but he’s still able to ground his stories in a way that is very relatable to broad audiences. Avatar inspired me to ultimately make my little short ‘Ruin’ that got me on to the Fox people, and they gave me the Maze Runner movies. From there it went to Planet of the Apes and ultimately to Zelda.”

Bell went on to talk about the Zelda IP’s untapped potential in films, saying that it’s now being made not just because it can be, but because the people behind it want to make “something special”.

“It’s going to be awesome,” he said. “My whole life has led up to this moment. I grew up on Zelda and it is the most important property, I think, that’s untapped IP, if you will. So we very much are working hard to do something. We’re not just trying to do it because we can. We want to make something really special.”

When asked about the production schedule of the movie, Bell said, “We’re working on the script, and whether it’s the next one or not, it’s hard to say exactly. But certainly the plan is, after Apes is done, to have a little bit of a rest for a moment, and then dive into [Zelda] and hopefully give fans what they’re hoping for, and also invite new people in. I think Nintendo’s desire is to introduce people to this world that’s been around for 40 years now.”

Shortly after the announcement of the Zelda movie, series creator Shigeru Miyamoto said that the project had been in discussion for about a decade, and that Nintendo and Sony Pictures will be “taking plenty of time to prepare” for the project to ensure it can “meet everyone’s expectations”.
Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima has achieved a new milestone with over 6.5 million units sold since launch. The success doesn’t just stop there – as reported by Deadline (and confirmed by the PlayStation Blog), Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are working on a film adaptation. It will be directed by Chad Stahelski of John Wick fame.

Stahelski, along with Alex Young and Jason Spitz, will also produce the title through 87Eleven Entertainment. PlayStation Productions will have Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan as producers while Sucker Punch will serve as executive producers. Qizilbash, who is also the head of PlayStation Productions, said that, “We’re excited to be partnering with Chad and 87Eleven Entertainment, to bring their vision of Jin’s story to the big screen. We love working with creative partners like Chad, who have a passion for our games, ensuring we can create rich adaptations that will excite our fans and new audiences.”

Ghost of Tsushima released in July 2020 for PS4 and sold more than 2.4 million units in just three days. It became the console’s fastest selling first-party original IP with over five million units sold by November 2020. Along with updates to the single-player, Sucker Punch would also release a free multiplayer mode called Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.

Job listings have indicated that a sequel is in the works though Sucker Punch hasn’t officially announced the same.
The Last of Us Part 2 is being prepped for launch in the coming months. However, Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are also working with HBO to adapt The Last of Us into a TV series. Neil Druckmann, who co-directs the second game, will be onboard but another talent is also joining: composer Gustavo Santaolalla.

Druckmann confirmed the news on Twitter today, noting that Santaolalla would be “joining us” to bring the TV show to life after “lending his incredible musical talent to The Last of Us Part 2.” It’s safe to assume to Santaolalla will be coming the music. Though known for his impactful work on The Last of Us 1 and 2, he also has an illustrious background composing for films like Babel, The Insider, 21 Grams, The Motorcycle Diaries and much more.

There’s no premiere date for the TV series yet, though we know that Druckmann will be serving as writer and producer while Craig Mazin of Chernobyl fame will be working with him. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime. As for The Last of Us Part 2, it’s currently slated to release on May 29th for PS4.
