A sigh of relief from Microsoft.

The Xbox One has been steadily launching in a whole lot of territories worldwide; in September, it has been especially focused on Asia, with its launch Japan, and a planned one for China next week. And just earlier today, it also successfully launched in five other Asian markets- India, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea. Today was also meant to be the day it would have originally gone on sale in China, but there was a last minute delay there.

Unlike Japan, where the launch was a damp squib, the launch in these countries seems to have gone extremely well; players in Korea were lining up for the console for up to 160 hours before the launch, while malls in Singapore were jam packed for the launch. In India, several launch parties were held to celebrate the launch of the console, and Amazon India, the exclusive online retailer for the system in the country, reports unprecedented demand.

Of course, Microsoft still has its work cut out for it in these territories, as the PlayStation 4 launched here as much as nearly a full year ago in many cases, and is now firmly entrenched. Whether Microsoft can come to dominate these territories, and change its fortunes around in this round of the console wars, remains to be seen.

Seoul, South Korea – August 22, 2012 – The newfound momentum behind virtual reality crossed the Pacific today as Oculus, a developer of virtual reality technology, announced that it had hired Dillon Seo to direct its business operations in South Korea. Seo, a 7-year industry veteran and former Business Director for Scaleform, will lead the launch of the Oculus Korea office and spearhead collaboration with Korean game studios that are developing innovative video game experiences with the company’s new virtual reality headset, the Oculus Rift.

“South Korea is home to some of the world’s most talented game developers who are consistently innovating across genres,” said Brendan Iribe, CEO at Oculus. “Dillon, along with our new team based in Seoul, will allow Oculus to collaborate closely with top Korean developers to create completely new and totally immersive virtual reality experiences with the Rift. I’m thrilled to see what they make.”

Seo is leaving his executive sales position at Autodesk, where he led sales and marketing efforts for Autodesk Gameware solutions, to head up the new Oculus Korea office.

“I could not be more excited to join the Oculus team,” said Dillon Seo. “Playing with the Rift has changed the way I think about gaming forever. I’m confident gamers and developers around the world will feel the same way when they try it for themselves. Opening an office here in Seoul means that South Korean game studios will always have fully localized technical support and a close partner in the development of amazing new virtual reality video games using Oculus technology.”

Alas, sometimes one can love a thing too much and South Korea has encountered numerous wide-spread issues regarding game addiction. In a bid to prevent younger players from developing said problems, the South Korean government are introducing a new ‘Cinderella’ law, whereby gamers under 16 years of age will be blocked from online play from midnight to 6am. This has, of course, kicked of a whole world of criticism in regards to the civil rights of children. The Korean Association of Game Industry, which includes several prominent businesses, is preparing a lawsuit based on its claim that the law is excessively prohibitive.

Thanks to Massively for the info.
