Having originally come out on more powerful home consoles, it should come as no surprise that High On Life on the Nintendo Switch will be getting a visual downgrade. As the trailer showcases the port, the downgrade doesn’t appear to be too bad, and the fast-paced gameplay is seemingly being left intact.

The sacrifices were seemingly made to the texture resolutions, with plenty of textures appearing much muddier than they do on the PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game.

High On Life is a game that comes from the creator of Rick and Morty. The game puts players in the shoes of a high-school graduate that has no job. Things quickly take a turn, however, with an alien invasion that ends up with humanity getting kidnapped. Players have to team up with a variety of talking weapons in order to take down the alien threat.

The title was originally released on PC and Xbox. Since then, there have been plenty of updates and DLC releases for the shooter. 2023 also saw the game reaching new audiences thanks to a PS4 and PS5 release.

Payday 3 is playable only on PS5 and offers co-op heist-focused shooting. While it had an awful launch, Overkill Software has since released numerous updates, quality-of-life changes and content. Granted, it’s still not at the level of Payday 2, but it could satisfy longtime fans who want to try something new.

High on Life and Pac-Man World Re-Pac are playable on PS4 and PS5. The former is a first-person shooter from Squanch Games with Rick and Morty-esque humor as players battle an alien cartel to save humanity. The latter is a remake of 2004’s Pac-Man World, a 3D platformer unlike its arcade brethren (though the original classic is unlockable).

All three titles will be available until March 3rd. Check out this month’s offerings here, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

The game’s physical release will have two editions on offer. A Standard Edition will be available for $49.99, compiling the base game and its expansion, High on Knife. The Collector’s Edition, meanwhile, will include the game and its DLC, as well as the game’s original soundtrack, an 11″ x 17″ poster, a 48-page art book, a Knifey keychain, a Mopley stress ball, and a sticker sheet. It will retail for a price of $99.99.

Pre-orders for both editions are set to go live tomorrow, on February 27, and will remain open until March 31. A specific release date is currently unknown, but Limited Run’s website mentions an estimated window of July for the Standard Edition, and August for the Collector’s Edition.

High on Life is currently available on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

High on Knife has been described by developer Squanch Games as a big new bonus episode that takes place after the events of the main campaign in High on Life. The story involves the protagonist coming home to find a missed-package slip for a delivery addressed to the player’s knife companion, Knifey. The player is then tasked with going to Knifey’s home planet to pick up the mysterious package in person.

The DLC features quite few actors and comedians lending their voices to various characters, including Gabourey Sidibe as the head of Muxxalon, Sarah Sherman as ex-military pistol Harper, Alec Robbins as new pinball-inspired gun BALL, Ken Marino as an alien parasite, and Michael Cusack as Knifey.

High on Knife is priced at $14.99, and is available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5 and PS4. There is also now a bundle available including both High on Life and its DLC, priced at $49.99.

High on Knife was unveiled back in June during an Xbox Games Showcase Extended presentation. The expansion will feature 52 new characters, alongside characters returning from the base game, like Gene and Knifey.

New weapons coming to High on Life with the DLC include an ex-military pistol named Harper and a pinball-inspired gun named B.A.L.L. The antagonist for the DLC, named Mux, will be played by Oscar-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe.

High on Life anded its Xbox console exclusivity back in July and launched on PS4 and PS5. The game puts players in the shoes of a high school graduate as an alien cartel invades Earth and begins kidnapping humans en masse.

Our PlayStation fans have been slightly less thrilled. Which is why we’re so excited to share that it’s coming their way very soon. Like now, soon! Thank you for your patience!”

High On Life was the biggest third-party launch in Game Pass history in December 2022, with 7.5 million players in April 2023. It will receive some paid DLC, High On Knife, later this Fall for all platforms. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.

Though PS5 and PS4 version of High on Life have yet to be officially unveiled, they were recently spotted in the PlayStation Store backend by PS4 updates tracking site Orbis Patches (via @Knoebelbroet on Twitter). The game recently received an update on PlayStation, suggesting that an announcement and release could be imminent.

Upon its release in December, High on Life saw the biggest ever Game Pass launch for a third party title. In April, Squanch Games announced that it had surpassed 7.5 million players since release.

Last month at the Xbox Games Showcase Extended presentation, an expansion titled High on Knife was also revealed.

High on Life is currently available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.

High on Life was originally released back in December 2022 on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Since its release, the game has been quite successful, even enjoying a brief stint as one of the best-selling games on digital distribution platform Steam.

A report from December indicated that High on Life was the most popular game on Game Pass at the time, surpassing other major titles like Minecraft and Forza Horizon 5. The game went on to become the biggest third-party launch in the history of Xbox Game Pass.

Squanch Games spoke about High on Life‘s success in December, speaking about how it made the decision to bring the game on to Xbox Game Pass because it was a value-add. The appeal of bringing the game to the subscription service was to get it in front of more players who otherwise may not have played the game if they had to buy it.

The service’s value has, of course, been made clear to players and users on a consistent basis for quite some time now- but the developers who engage with it have also frequently spoken about its benefits. High on Life developer Squanch Games has now joined that growing list as well.

Speaking on a recent episode of the official Xbox Podcast, Rick and Morty co-creator and Squanch Games founder Justin Roiland spoke about the decision to launch day and date on Game Pass and what led to it.

“Before we decided to pull the trigger on it, I spoke with a handful of other studio folks who did Game Pass,” he said. “And I ultimately came to the conclusion based off of what I had heard that it is– it’s a value-add. Because essentially, there’s a lot of people that would otherwise not have picked up the game and played it.

“And those people, if you believe in what you’ve made, and you really you feel confident that you’ve made something special, or different– and we do with our game– those folks can become evangelists in a way for the title.”

“If someone’s on the fence or raising an eyebrow, what is this thing? And if they’re a Game Pass subscriber, well, they can just download it and dive in,” he added. “[It’s] a powerful tool to get a lot of reach. If you really do believe you made something worthwhile, it’s a pretty powerful tool. And that’s what I gathered in doing my due diligence on it on my own. A lot of folks told me that non-Game Pass games that they ship versus Game Pass games, [they get] 7x sales.”

“We are an indie studio,” Roiland said. “We’re small. And we do want a war chest to make a bunch more fun crazy games. And that was of consideration for us. It’s like, ‘OK, we really want this game to get out there. We want it to do. We want sales to do well.’ And I think that, yeah, I mean, from what I gathered in my little poking around and asking different folks, Game Pass was a huge value-add in that respect.”

Of course, exact numbers for how many players High on Life has attracted since launch haven’t yet been revealed, but it’s clear that the comedic first person shooter has done exceedingly well for itself right out the gate, and Game Pass clearly contributed to that significantly. Where the game and its developer go from here on out should be interesting to see.
