We celebrate the long history of first-person shooters with a rundown of 30 of the best games that this genre has to offer.

The first-person shooter genre is one of the oldest in the medium of video games, yet it remains extremely relevant and popular to this date. Over the last three decades or so, fans have gotten the opportunity to experience a ton of amazing games of this ilk and this feature is a celebration of the best of the best. So, join us as we run down 30 of the best first-person shooter games of all time.

Resident Evil Village

The Resident Evil series has seen its fair share of remakes in the form of the stellar Resident Evil 2 and the disappointing Resident Evil 3, but it has consistently delivered high-quality follow-ups. These include Resident Evil 7 and its follow-up Village, the latter of which represent the best of what the series offers. Resident Evil Village majestically swerves from one kind of horror to the next without any hiccups, and the action keeps pace with the changing scenery and shifting mechanics. The core gameplay of shooting down zombies is much faster than Resident Evil 7, but it retains the heft and groundedness of a survival horror game that comes together to make it one of the best in its class.

These games have scared the wits out of us like none other.

A first person perspective isn’t something that works for every genre of games, but when it comes to horror, there’s something about a first person camera that just makes everything so much scarier. With the action becoming much more immediate, the potency of the horror increases manifold, as players are put into situations where they feel like they’re actually there- which, really, is like a dream for any creative person telling a horror story.

In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at fifteen of what we feel are the scariest first person games we’ve ever played. Some of these are out and out horror, while others find other ways to unsettle their audiences without being proper horror titles- but they all deserve a place in this list.ALIEN ISOLATION

You knew this was coming- so let’s get it out of the way first. Alien Isolation captures feeling of the horrifying nightmare of being trapped with a Xenomorph perfectly. Every second of the experience is wrought with unimaginable horror, and crippling fear can take hold of you at any second, given how deadly the alien is. The fact that it’s that crippling fear you constantly have to fight back against to ensure your survival makes the horror that much more potent.

There are plenty of creepy moments in games, some unsettling while others downright frightening.

Plenty of games have some spooky moments in them. Some parts of games jump out and scare you, while other bits creep up into your spine, sending shivers through your body like a wave of suspense. Some of these games scare you and it’s done before you can even realize what happened, as your instincts take over, you blast out at whatever it is that scared the hell out of you and you move on.

You cannot kill or deal with the horror that is dogging you at your heels. Sometimes it’s all the more subtle too, all that needs to be done sometimes is to have some good auditory and lighting queues to make a player jump. Whatever the flavor of fear, developers have quite a few tricks up their sleeves these days. While there are undoubtedly countless numbers of moments in gaming where people have been scared out of their pants we are going to stick to the one’s that have stuck in our mind. Keep in mind there may be a few spoilers in here, so careful what you read.

1. Gone Home:

There is a scene in this game where you find a secret room with a pentagram painted on a small, antique table with candles set up on all its points, with a book about the “other side.” This entire game is pretty spooky, actually. The main character gets home very late at night, in the middle of a thunder and lightning storm to an old, dark, empty mansion. The audio creaks and cracks, there are sounds that resemble footprints clunking around, but there was just something about this small, claustrophobic room with spiritual markings in it.
