An interesting mix of classic titles come to the service.

Ever since the Virtual Console was effectively replaced via the new Nintendo Switch Online service, feelings have been mixed about it. While in theory having a lot of classic titles wrapped into a cheap subscription service is great, the slow drip of the Switch Online service has been a bit of a rough one for fans who want more, and more quickly. But oh well, such is life. Either way, the service continues to get games and this month it’s not too bad a slate.

As revealed by Nintendo, a mix of new SNES and NES titles will be coming next week. Starfox 2, Super Punch-Out!!, Kirby Super Star and Breath of Fire 2 will be added on the SNES side, with the NES one getting Crystalis and Journey to Silius. It’s a pretty eclectic mix of games, no doubt.

All of the games will be available as part of the Switch Online service starting December 12th.

Awkward E3 pressers, the Ataribox, Half Life 2: Episode 3 - the year was full of odd developments.

Another year, another buffet of gaming stories that range from the fantastical to the sombre. However, this year also had its fair share of bizarre happenings, from announcements and crazed rants to unusual mods and greedy yet incompetent publisher practices. Let’s take a look at 15 of the weirdest gaming stories from 2017.

Persona 5 Spoiler Bots

When Persona 5 first released, Atlus was so gung-ho about preventing spoilers from leaking that it actually threatened content creators and streamers with account suspensions. To that end, someone created Twitter bots for Persona 5 to spoil the game should it ever be referenced on Twitter. This resulted in the official Persona 5 Twitter receiving spoilers every time “#Persona5” was used. Ah, justice.

From the recesses of history...

In the mid 1990s, after the unexpected success of Star Fox for the SNES, Nintendo commissioned a full fledged sequel. Star Fox 2‘s development was completed for the SNES- it was a hugely experimental and wildly ambitious follow up to the original game, and… it never released. By the time the game was done, the PlayStation and Sega Saturn were on the market, and Nintendo felt that an SNES 3D game would not hold up to them. Nintendo cancelled plans for release quietly, and elements of Star Fox 2 went on to show up in Star Fox 64, Star Fox Assault, Star Fox Command, and Star Fox Zero.

But yesterday, Nintendo confirmed that this old game would be getting an official release after all- Star Fox 2 will be available with the upcoming SNES Classic Mini. The news of this took a lot of delighted fans aback- who expected this two decade old game to come back again in this way?

However, of all the people who are happy about Star Fox 2‘s release, none is more so than Dylan Cuthbert, who was the head developer on the original game all those years ago. Speaking to Kotaku, Cuthbert said, “It made my day. It’s bloody awesome!”

Speaking of the game’s cancellation, he said, “Our older retro form of 3D just didn’t cut it anymore and Nintendo didn’t want to raise comparisons. I agree that strategically (if not emotionally) it was the correct decision. But now our older retro form of 3D is the new cool kid on the block, it’s perfect timing!

“I mean, I had completely given up on the chance that it might come out. I spent two years of hard work making it and loved every minute. Finally people get to see all the little cool tweaks and things, all the touches and special ideas we threw in there. This game had so much experimentation at the start and that really shows in some of the encounters you’ll come across.”

He sounds jubilant. It must be so heartening for him to see his beloved baby return in such a big way. Let’s hope that Nintendo can now keep this game in active rotation- even if it turns out to have aged terribly, in the end, it’s a piece of gaming history, and it needs to be preserved as such.
