June isn't the busiest month for releases but there's still plenty to look forward to.

June may not be the biggest month in terms of gaming for releases – which is understandable since the biggest gaming expo of the year E3 will be taking place. That being said, the month isn’t completely barren when it comes to releases. Whether you’re in the mood for a first person free run or simply want to solve a few mysteries, June can keep you busy if you’ll let it. Here are some of the big name games to look forward to and why.

Mirrors Edge Catalyst

Faith returns in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, the much anticipated sequel to the original game. That being said, this is no ordinary sequel – Catalyst will be a reboot and origins story for Faith, presenting a whole new tale of oppression and intrigue in a futuristic authoritarian city. A lot has changed from the original Mirror’s Edge, including the addition of a skill tree and a huge open world to explore. Players will have the chance to create races that can stretch through the city or take part in the expansive story (which isn’t nearly as forgettable as the first game). Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is out on June 7th for North America and June 9th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Mighty No. 9

The long-in development, often-delayed spiritual successor to Mega Man will finally be upon us. Mighty No. 9 has seen its fair share of issues and controversies, ranging from failed additional Kickstarters to controversies with its community manager. That’s not even getting into the awful launch trailer that recently released and was apparently publisher Deep Silver’s fault. That being said, we’re still interested in what Mighty No. 9 has to offer with its combo-based gameplay, level design and call-backs to the Mega Man franchise. It’ll be available on just about every home platform on June 21st and June 24th

Umbrella Corps

What do you get when you cross a competitive multiplayer shooter with the zombies of Resident Evil? A horrifying monster, for one, but actually it’s Umbrella Corps. This shooter focuses on teaming up with friends as part of various mercenary groups sent in by bio-weapons corporations. Though primarily third person shooter-based, Umbrella Corps allows for aiming down sights in first person and melee combat. Numerous modes and levels, some which call back to previous games like Resident Evil: Code Veronica, also exist to be explored. Zombies are also a key factor, disrupting your operations when you’re not being gunned down by enemy groups. It’s out on June 21st in North America and Europe for PC and PS4.

Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens

You knew it was coming. The Lego Star Wars franchise has been a proverbial juggernaut in its own right and the saga continues with Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Interestingly, Traveler’s Tales is working on incorporating a number of new features into the series such as cover shooting; Multi-Build, which gives you more freedom for building and expanding on paths to explore; and much more. Classic characters like Rey, Poe Dameron, Finn, Kylo Ren and Han Solo are featured and the game will actually include content taking place between the period of Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Will we finally experience the battle of Jakku firsthand? One can only hope. Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens is out on June 28th in North America and Europe.

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness

The Star Ocean franchise returns with the game’s first PS4 outing (though it’s also out on PS3 in Japan) Integrity and Faithlessness, which comes to North America on June 28th. The RPG will be unlike any of its predecessors with a seven member party and seamless transitions from the cut scenes to gameplay. We’ll find out just how good it is when it actually releases next month.

The Technomancer

Spiders has been rather hit-or-miss with its action RPGs (mostly miss with efforts like Mars: War Logs and Bound by Flame). The Technomancer will nonetheless continue this string of efforts, taking place in the same setting as Mars War Logs. With three styles of combat, four skill trees, crafting, varying choices for completing quests and a choice of numerous companions, The Technomancer will also be the developer’s first current gen exclusive, releasing on PC, Xbox One and PS4. It’s out on June 28th worldwide.

We Happy Few

Imagine a dystopia Wellington Wells during an alternate World War 2 era. Something has happened to the city in order for it to win the war but it’s citizens resorted to the drug Joy in order to forget it all. What happens when you play as someone who hasn’t taken the drug and is subsequently hunted by those around them? We Happy Few balances survival horror with a sandbox element, challenging you to escape Wellington Wells without arousing the suspicion of those around you. It’s been in development since February 2015 and despite no solid release date, we know it will be coming in June to PC and Xbox One to inflict some Unreal Engine 4-powered trauma upon us all.

Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter

Frogwares’ Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter won’t be its last Sherlock Holmes title but it may be a while till we see the famous detective again. With five linked cases, a “deduction board” to piece together various clues and multiple conclusions, The Devil’s Daughter will continue the series’ penchant for compelling mysteries and consequences. It’s out on June 10th for PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Tri-Ace’s Star Ocean franchise returns this June on the PlayStation 4 in North America. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness will be out on June 28th according to the PlayStation Blog US with this year marking the 20th anniversary of the franchise.

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness is actually set between The Second Story and Till The End of Time (the second and third titles in the franchise) on the Faykreed. Protagonist Fidel Camuze teams with Miki Sauvester and the amnesic Relia as he protects his village. Despite its placement in the series chronology, Square Enix marketing lead Francis Santos has assured fans that you don’t have to play the previous games to enjoy the story in Integrity and Faithlessness.

The main appeal of the game should be its battle system though since it will allow you to have seven party members battling on-screen at the same time. Check out the game’s story trailer below and let us know whether you’ll be picking it up in June.

Everything you need to know about Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness.

Star Ocean 5, also known as Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, is an upcoming action adventure role playing game that is currently being developed the Nepro Japan subsidiary tri-Ace, Inc who worked on Final Fantasy XIII-2 and the Valkyrie Profile series of games. The game is being published by Square Enix who are best known for the Final Fantasy series.

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness is being developed exclusively for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The release date is to be announced.

3. Gameplay

Development

Star Ocean is a long running franchise of action role playing games that have adventuring mixed, developed primarily by tri-Ace. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness is actually serving as the ninth game in the series, but in the continuity of the main series it’s the fifth game.

The game was officially announced to be in development by way of leaked images from Japanese gaming publication Famitsu on April 14th of 2015. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness specifically takes place between the second and third games in the series, both of which were developed by tri-Ace. “The Second Story” however was jointly developed with TOSE for the PSP port. This was followed by confirmation of Square Enix as the games publisher.

Speaking in the magazine, producer Shuichi Kobayashi has said, “[Having previously been in marketing] I decided to change positions and become a producer out of the belief that Star Ocean is worth staking my life and legacy on. For Star Ocean 5, I wanted the game to overtly take cues from Star Ocean 3 and draw its essence from that game.”

Speaking about the name of the game, specifically the subtitle of “Integrity and Faithlessness”, programmer Yoshiharu Gotanda has said, “There are multiple meanings behind the subtitle for this game. It’ll make sense by the end once you play the game, I think.”

The developer talks about the future of the series and what they want to do with it, given its popularity as a niche action JRPG. Kobayashi said, “I’d like to be able to keep putting these games out. By the end, when it’s all finished, we hope we have a game that draws in series fans and new players alike.”

While the game is being developed exclusively for Sony platforms at this time, the game is being targeted specifically at the PlayStation 3. The PlayStation 4 build of the game will be a port and it will not contain different content.

Speaking about the possibility of add-on content, Kobayashi said, “I sincerely don’t want to do anything with this game that’ll upset people even a little bit.” He would much rather release the game as a whole and have it DLC free rather than have players to be concerned that they may eventually release a “full version” that would collect the DLC. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness was 30 percent complete as of its announcement in Famitsu.

Story

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness specifically takes place between the second and third games in the series. It’s set on the planet of Feycreed some 6000 light years from Earth.

The game follows the adventures of Fedel Camus, a 23 year old swordsman from the village of Stahl and Miki Sovesta, who uses a staff as her weapon. The two characters are thought to be trying to protect there village and to live in the Seven Years of Darkness as war begins to threaten the world again with an invasion from the Cursed Mark Creatures beginning.

Gameplay

Gameplay remains unchanged when it comes to navigating the game world, building up its cast of characters and interacting with the numerous NPCs scattered throughout the game. However, some changes have been put in place and some alterations to the games core mechanics have been made in some areas.

When players are making their way through the games world and encounter an enemy threat, the gameplay will transition seamlessly into battles scenarios as you move between the several linked locations in the game’s world. The game makes use of a “seamless real-time battle” system that will alter your attacks depending on your distance from the enemy. Combos can be used to to help the player deal greater damage to enemies once they close with them. The player can also switch between different characters on the fly.

Talking about the games battles, the director Hiroshi Ogawa has said, “Basic battles are the same as previous entries, where the player controlled character takes on the enemy in one-on-one battles. On the other hand, boss battles see the whole party squaring off against bosses, which lends those fights a different feel that players can enjoy.”
