A pitch by DICE for a third Battlefront game was allegedly rejected by EA, with the studio now supposedly working on another new Battlefield game.

The two DICE-developed Star Wars Battlefront games were big money-makers for EA, and even though Battlefront 2 had a horrific start, the developer was able to ultimately turn things around for the game and turn it into a legitimate excellent experience. It seems, however, that EA isn’t keen for a follow-up to the series- far from it, in fact.

According to journalist and noted insider Tom Henderson, a Star Wars Battlefront 3 was pitched by DICE, but EA rejected the pitch due to licensing costs, with one anonymous former DICE developer allegedly stating that the game would have to sell 20% than ordinary releases to be able to make the same amount of money.

Henderson says that with a number of key Battlefront developers having left DICE in the last year, it looks very unlikely that the developer will working on another game in the series. He claims that in addition to the recently-launched Battlefield 2042, DICE is currently working on another new Battlefield game, which recently passed the conceptual stage, early in its development.

According to Henderson, there are currently two Star Wars games in development at EA-owned studios, though both of these are single player narrative-driven games. Presumably, one of these would be a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at Respawn Entertainment, with both the developer and the publisher having made explicitly clear is going to happen, short of an actual official announcement.

Last year, it emerged that a Star Wars Battlefront spinoff had been in the works at EA Vancouver and Criterion Games, though like many other Star Wars games under EA, went on to be cancelled. In 2019, DICE stated that owing to Battlefront 2’s growing popularity, the developer had no plans for a sequel.

Given EA’s turbulent track record with the Star Wars license and Henderson’s proven track record with leaks, this report doesn’t come across as terribly hard to believe, though as is always the case with unverified reports of such nature, take this with a grain of salt for now.

Battlefront 3 was a pitched title from DICE, but ultimately, the title was shot down by EA due to licensing costs.

The cancelled third game in the original series, not the EA and DICE reboot, to be clear.

Before we had DICE and EA reboot the long beloved Star Wars Battlefront series with last year’s name of the same game, a third game in the franchise, Star Wars Battlefront 3, had been in development for a while, before it was finally cancelled. Recently, we got to see that cancelled game, prompting many to muse that the cancelled project looked better than what we did end up getting.

It’s the kind of rhetoric that’s usually unfalsifiable by nature- an inherently subjective statement about a product that doesn’t exist, meaning that there is no way whatsoever to refute it. However, it appears as though many may have a chance to test that hypothesis soon, because Russian developers at Frontwire Studios will be apparently completing and overhauling the game, remaking it and launching it on Steam- for absolutely no cost.

That price of free (which means that they will be making no profit from the project), coupled with the game being renamed Star Wars: Galaxy in Turmoil, are what should help the game keep away from any potential legal issues. It appears as though Frontwire may have a compelling case here, because it sounds like Valve are convinced of this new project- they have backed the new game.

“It is with great pleasure that as of today I am able to officially announce that Frontwire Studios has officially signed a distribution deal with Steam/Valve for the game Galaxy in Turmoil,” Frontwire boss Tony Fergie Romanelli said. “After ongoing discussion between Valve representatives and myself, Valve/Steam has agreed to ship Galaxy in Turmoil to its millions of users for FREE.”

It will be interesting to see how this new game is received- assuming litigation from Disney and/or EA doesn’t strike it down first, that is.

I’m guessing that if you’re a fan of Star Wars and the Star Wars Battlefront series of video games, you got all giddy and childish when you heard that there’s new footage of the game set to be shown at the upcoming Star Wars Convention this upcoming April 16th through to the 19th.

Well now all you Jedi, regardless of your rank or standing with the council, can all look forward to finding out more about the games pre-order details and more coming soon. Though exactly when that is, is a little vague. The EAStarWars Twitter accound tweeted, “We will reveal more details as we get closer to Star Wars Celebration.” So that’s something.

They also then tweeted, “Patience, young Jedi. Star Wars Battlefront will be available for pre-order soon. Be sure to follow our channels to find out when.” in response to a fan asking about the date pre-orders go live.

Who knows, as unlikely as it is, they might actually pull this one off.

Everyone else- put up, or shut up.

One of the biggest mysteries surrounding EA and DICE’s upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront game has now been cleared up- the platforms that it will be released on. Because neither EA nor DICE ever actually confirmed the platforms they were targeting, a lot of speculation was running rampant. PC, Xbox One, and PS4 would be in, obviously, but would Xbox 360 and PS3 also be supported?

Especially considering how DICE’s other two games this generation so far, Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline, have come out for those systems. In fact, some people even thought that because of the Star Wars license, the game would come to Wii U. Well, all these rumors can now be put to rest, as EA has confirmed that the game will be launching this holiday season on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

That’s it, it will have no weaker hardware tying it down or holding it back- DICE is free to realize its vision, whatever it will be. Personally, I can’t wait to see what they achieve freed from the restrictions of decade old hardware.

Only shown to Gamestop though.

So earlier this week GDC was bouncing around, spewing vast amounts of hyperbole across the internet. Well EA were showcasing something behind closed doors recently at GDC, and wouldn’t you know it, there was a fantastic fan reaction according to EA COO Peter Moore.

They were showing the new Star Wars Battlefront, which was first shown at E3 2014. Moore took to Twitter to say, “A GREAT show with my friends/partners @GameStop. Superb ovation for latest gameplay footage on @starwars Battlefront.” The showing consisted of a new trailer that contained some new footage, which is nice. Though nothing official has come out, the rumour mill predicts that the footage will be getting a public showing soon.

Typically, I’m not a fan of “behind closed doors events”, I find them constraining and counter productive to expanding the gaming media environment as a whole. But they do serve a purpose and can help generate some hype. This was a perfect example.

DICE's Battlefront won't be out any time soon so let's start making some exorbitant demands.

Star Wars: Battlefront 3 – if that’s what DICE finally decides to call it – hasn’t been seen or heard of since its brief E3 2013 announcement for PC and next gen consoles. In fact, the only news that’s come out about the game is that it will be put on hold along with all future Battlefield 4 DLC so that DICE can go about properly patching their flagship FPS.

Good things coming to those who wait/put up with shabby multiplayer launches and whatnot.

Despite the lack of information on the sequel, there’s still plenty from the past to draw from in terms of what DICE could implement. We’ve already seen what Frostbite 3 can do in a full-scale, AAA first person shooter. What does that mean for what Battlefront 3 could have? Well, for starters…

1. Keep Galactic Conquest as a Single-Player Option

In Battlefront 2, Galactic Conquest was somewhat of a Risk-style game in which you traversed the universe and conquered/protected planets. Colliding with other players causes you to head to the traditional FPS mode and combat said opposing forces on the planet. It looks basic, sure, but it opened up a lot in terms of gameplay, exploration and strategy, especially when you factored in level-ups and bonuses.

With the rise in multiplayer popularity since then (not to mention large multiplayer matches), it would only make sense that DICE would want Galactic Conquest to be more synonymous with their own brand of Conquest. It could work – heck, we’re sure it’ll be a blast – but we’d like to see Galactic Conquest kept as an option for single-player as well. Maybe there could be a way to fuse the single-player and multi-player prospects together to ease in new players. But again, there are some of us who are fine cruising through an intergalactic reign of conquest/terror on our lonesome.

2. AI Bots

Yes, we want something similar to Titanfall. Interestingly, Battlefront 2 already handled bots when you took to space or planet battles, having you control a single soldier while other units backed you up. But we’d like a variant of this for multiplayer as well. Large player caps are great and all but why not also come up with a solution for varying player caps and replacing the other units with bots?

It could help to get new players integrated all the more easily as they both learn the mechanics and understand the overall tone of matches. It could also give some leeway to DICE in terms of different map sizes since a lesser number of players could facilitate a tighter FPS pace overall. More importantly, if it hasn’t already, DICE will be able to properly balance out huge multiplayer matches and not worry about server troubles like the kind that have struck Battlefield 4. Speaking of which…

3. Bug Test, Bug Test, Bug Test

This is of paramount important. It’s not like DICE didn’t effectively test for bugs in Battlefield 4. But that’s depending on who you believe because, well, where else could also those bugs have come from since launch? Let’s not even get into the patches fixing one thing and then breaking something else, facilitating a vicious cycle of patchwork that will only server to further delay development on other projects.

Though we’d like to see a strong single-player element, it’s understandable that Battlefront 3 will have an even greater multiplayer emphasis than before. Factoring in all the different modes of progression, it only makes sense that players will find the lion’s share of enjoyment in the multiplayer modes alone. DICE needs to properly play-test and balance the game more than its previous titles in order to ensure the satisfaction at launch that Battlefield 4 couldn’t provide. As it is, there will only be 3 platforms to develop for this time so it shouldn’t be impossible.

4. Integrate Instant Action and Galactic Conquest

Cruising the galaxy and annexing planets to your own personal empire is top and all but there are some of us looking for simple mercenary work. Likewise, we’d like to feel like we’re part of a bigger machine and cooperate with other players towards objectives. So why not have a clan-like Empire system in which different players can join different allegiances and fight for them in Conquest battles? This means that if you go with an Instant Action option, you’ll be able to choose your allegiance and have it go towards a greater war effort.

It could be somewhat similar to PlanetSide 2 in terms of progression and alliances, and while it may seem like an entirely separate game on its own, it could be simplified to just allow players to cooperate in battles as part of another player’s army instead. Maybe confer some bonuses to your own troops depending on the feats achieved? There are a lot of different ways this could be handled. But one thing we can agree on is this…

5. Skip the Clone Wars

The Clone Wars formed the central conflict that eventually birthed the Galactic Empire as the Republic’s troops fought the Separatists’ droids. The problem is we’ve seen it all before and from multiple perspectives at that. Cartoons, video games, CG movie adaptations – you name it. While we doubt the next few Star Wars movies would be ready by the time Battlefront 3 rolls out, it would be great if DICE explored some of the novels in terms of events and lore to integrate. There’s still a lot to Star Wars that many fans aren’t aware of and it could form the basis for some excellent conflicts.

Sure, it may mean removing some factions like the Droids, but there must be some way to integrate them without needing to focus on a war that takes place between easily two of the worst sci-fi films ever made.

As of now, however, it doesn't seem to be on the cards for release.

Some time ago, a listing for Star Wars: First Assault was found and it was an unannounced shooter for Xbox Live. Now, it’s been revealed to be a downloadable multiplayer game that was supposed to come out in Spring. It features 8 versus 8 gameplay, where one team controls Rebel soldiers and another controls a team of Stormtroopers, fighting across planets like Bespin and Tatooine.

But more interestingly, according to those who know the project, if First Assault sold well – assuming it isn’t going to be released any time soon – then it won’t be long before we see the eagerly requested Star Wars: Battlefront 3. OF course, considering the fact that even projects like Star Wars 1313 are in limbo, it’s hard to tell.

In fact, the Star Wars franchise seems pretty empty right now aside from the new movies slated to release in the coming years under Disney. The company recently announced that there would be no new Clone Wars episodes on Cartoon Network. Here’s hoping the coming months are brighter for Star Wars fans.

Unfortunately, the title had ceased development in 2008. Since then, various gameplay details and assets have been making their way online, showing the game that could been.

Recently a one hour long video of rough build gameplay was uploaded onto Youtube. For it’s now perceived outdated-ness, it’s amazing how far the game was developed before Lucasarts pulled the plug.
