"PlayStation VR is going to be a great step in the evolution of our industry and the evolution of how people play games."

VR is the future of gaming. However, we have had two major VR launches this year – the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift – that came and went and really didn’t do much.

That is because the best chance that VR has of breaking into the mainstream comes not from either of those, but from the PlayStation VR, which is due to launch in October this year. The PlayStation VR is a relatively high end VR headset that comes at a price of $400 (far less than the $600 that the Oculus demands, or the staggering $800 needed for a Vive), and also runs on a PS4, rather than requiring a high end PC. For these reasons, the general understanding is that if VR is to have a chance of catching on, the PlayStation VR is it.

EA, apparently, believe so too. Speaking at their financial briefing, EA CEO Andrew Wilson mentioned that the PSVR was very important to the future of VR- and therefore, to gaming as a whole.

“Yes, so on PlayStation VR, again, we’re very excited about this,” Wilson said. “I think to your point, given its price point and modality of play, it’s one of the more accessible forms of virtually reality play right now. We’ve got a great experience coming later in the year that I played, and it’s super fun and super exciting.

“I think that part of the reason people play games is to kind of immerse themselves in a fantasy and escape and fulfill these fantasies with their friends. Now, typically, when we design games, we design them on a big screen TV and we have to overcome, as designers, this spatial disconnect between us and the television.

“Of course, virtual reality, we don’t have to overcome that spatial disconnect. So the more that we can introduce people to low-barrier-to-entry virtual reality, I think the faster it’s going to take off as an industry. And so us as a company, we’re looking at how we can invest across all elements of the spectrum, from kind of the mobile element right up to the high-end elements. And PlayStation VR I think is going to be a great step in the evolution of our industry and the evolution of how people play games. And we’re going to continue to invest there.”

To EA’s credit, they seem to be putting their money where their mouth is on this one, and they have announced Star Wars Battlefront for the PlayStation VR, which also happens to be one of the few AAA VR games announced for any VR platform right now.

Will VR actually take off, and will PSVR have much to do with it? We don’t know that, yet. What we do know is that for now, VR seems to be what everyone is pinning their hopes on- and PSVR seems to be what VR itself is pinning its hopes on.

Burnout studio will continue to "build new ideas" for EA.

Publisher Electronic Arts has confirmed that Criterion Games’ extreme sports title – which promised a variety of different vehicles and activities – is no longer in development. The news was conveyed to GameSpot recently.

“While they’ve moved on from the previous project they’ve spoken about and aren’t pursuing it, they are continuing to build new ideas and experiment with new IP for EA, in addition to continuing to collaborate with other EA studios.”

The project, which went untitled, was in the prototype stage before the plug was pulled. Criterion is now shifting focus to work on Star Wars titles from other EA Studios including contributing to Star Wars Battlefront VR (the studio had also added Speeder bikes to the recent Battlefront).

It’s a shame that we won’t see another Burnout from the studio but at least all hands are on deck to support future Star Wars titles. Thoughts on the cancellation? Let us know below and stay tuned for more information.

"Battlefront is going to be one of those games that will really show gamers what it means to be in the world of VR."

One of the big games coming to PlayStation VR is Star Wars Battlefront. DICE’s reboot of the hit Star Wars action game series will be getting a VR version exclusively for Sony’s headset. Star Wars Battlefront VR is meant to serve as proof that Sony will try to serve traditional AAA experiences on their VR platform, too- it is also, according to Sony, going to be a killer app that finally sells people on the medium.

Vice president of marketing John Koller recently discussed Battlefront‘s PlayStation VR version in an interview with Fortune, and pointed out that the game had a legitimate chance of being a true system seller.

“We are working with EA, DICE, Lucasfilm, and Disney to try and make that experience something so special and so intrinsic to what’s in many people’s DNA, which is, ‘How can I be in that world of Star Wars?’ Koller said. “Battlefront is going to be one of those games that will really show gamers what it means to be in the world of VR. It’s very special. And just by the nature of it being designed as a VR experience, it’s going to be very different than the PlayStation 4 game.”

He also explained how he sees exclusives working in the VR market, versus how they do in the console or handheld markets.

“The role of exclusive VR games is a little different than what we see in the general console space,” Koller said. “For example, I don’t believe that there needs to be one particular killer app. There can be a range of killer apps. VR is so personal. It really depends on what experience that person wants and what they think is really great. That’s different than our (console) platform launches, where you generally can say, ‘That’s the game’ (that will help drive hardware sales).”

All of which is good- but when can fans expect Battlefront VR? While Koller is naturally cagey when it comes to committing to a date, he did suggest that it could be one of the 50 games that are launching for the PlayStation VR this Fall.

“Star Wars is a great example of something that we will really own during that launch period,” Koller said. “But over time there will be games that launch, where we’ve been helping with the development process, that will be most special on PlayStation VR, whether it’s exclusive or not. It’s going to be best played on PlayStation VR.”

The PlayStation VR is set to launch worldwide this October; Star Wars Battlefront VR is expected to launch for it exclusively shortly afterwards.
