Even with the vast range of IPs available to Microsoft, there are specific titles we'd like to see making a comeback on current-gen platforms.

Upon Microsoft’s acquisition of Zenimax and Activision-Blizzard, it’s become apparent that every big publisher has a venerable treasure trove of IPs that are just laying around. Microsoft and Xbox Game Studios have the benefit of owning a lot more of them following its various acquisitions.

Following the Activision-Blizzard deal, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has cited his desire to work on franchises from his childhood. Inevitably that leads to the question: What other titles could be brought back for the Xbox Series X/S generation? Let’s take a look at 15 of them here.

Scalebound

Set in a fantasy world with dragons, it saw protagonist Drew having a massive dragon named Thuban by his side. Along with functioning independently, one could also give commands to Thuban while fighting. It was also possible to directly control the dragon and enter Berserker mode for increased power. Announced in 2014 as an Xbox One exclusive, the hack and slash combat combined with battles on a massive scale looked promising, especially with up to four players in co-op.

Originally slated for release in late 2016, Scalebound would be delayed to the next year and subsequently cancelled in January 2017. Studio head Atsushi Inaba felt that “both sides failed” when it came to the cancellation and that it “didn’t do all of the things that we needed to do as a developer.” PlatinumGames has expressed interest in returning to the project – especially since Microsoft still owns the IP. It may not happen any time soon but never say never.

The infamous cancelled game has leaked footage allegedly from a dev kit.

StarCraft Ghost is a name you probably haven’t heard for quite some time, maybe even a name you never expected to hear again even. But life is strange sometimes, and 14 years after the game’s cancellation we actually have some footage from what is allegedly a playable build.

The build is allegedly from a Xbox dev kit. You can see the footage as uploaded by a YouTube user below (take note that footage has been getting taken down for copyright issues, so it’s possible the video could be gone by the time you read this). As reported by Kotaku, the build seems to be functional, though those who have downloaded it have had issues running it.

StarCraft Ghost was in development for PS2, Xbox and Gamecube and was eventually put on “indefinite hold” (aka canceled) in 2006. The game was to be a single player stealth action title following a Ghost named Nova. Some of the concepts, including Nova herself, made their way into StarCraft 2.

StarCraft: Ghost - still lives?

Back in 2002 Blizzard was wanting to create a third-person shooter and stealth action game hybrid known as StarCraft: Ghost for the consoles. Four years later in 2006 Blizzard decided to put the project on “indefinite hold.”

After talkin to Official PlayStation Magazion, Diablo senior designer Matthe Burger commented that StarCraft: Ghost actually “never been cancelled” and also started that “it’s on hold.”

Later he was asked directly if the game will ever see the light of day, Burger replied simply: “Maybe.”

Last summer, StarCraft 2 lead Dustin Browder stated that Nova’s appearance in recent RTS release of StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm did not mean that they were interested in Ghost.

However, he decided to tease by saying:

“It doesn’t mean that in two years from now, we won’t have those meetings, the team won’t be formed, but there is literally nothing happening around that game right now that would indicate that there’s any likelihood that it will happen,” he said in June.

“It’s just as likely we’ll do that again as Lost Vikings 3 or whatever. There’s just no guarantees one way or the other, but nothing is happening.

“We are super huge fans of consoles. We love console gaming as players,” Browder added. “I wasn’t really party to [the decision to put Ghost on hold] but I know it was a difficult decision.

Well maybe StarCraft: Ghost still truly exists somewhere out there, stay tuned on GamingBolt for more StarCraft news and leave any comments below regarding this rumor.
