Snow effects can be a hard thing to get right, but there are plenty of games that achieve that feat. Here are 10 games that do just that.

Video games are all about transporting players to magical realms that bridge the gap between fiction and reality, and technology has helped developers realize those ambitions better than ever before. Modern game engines allow teams to craft realistic weather conditions including but not limited to snowcapped environments. Some games do an excellent job in this regard and present their striking environments with stunning snow effects that don’t look all too different from real life. To that end, we present 10 of the best games that feature realistic snow effects. We will not only be talking about the visual elements of snow but also discuss the gameplay ramifications of these snow effects.

Forza Horizon 4 In Winter Season

Playground Games has established its reputation as a developer with a penchant for delivering games that consistently hit a high level of visual fidelity, and its premier franchise Forza Horizon is emblematic of those very strengths. Right from the environments to the car models and weather effects, Forza Horizon impresses with its striking attention to detail. Take for instance Forza Horizon 4, where seasonal changes can dramatically impact the visual and gameplay feel of the experience by a significant margin. The snow rendering is a particular highlight in this game, which not only looks great with proper terrain deformation when skirting along snow but can also cause your car to slip and slide in a realistic fashion – which adds a level of mechanical tension to the gameplay proceedings.

Epic Games kicks off 2020 with three new free games.

The Epic Games Store was a bounty of free games throughout the holidays, offering free games like Celeste, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun and even Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. The store is currently back to giving away free games every week. However, it’s starting 2020 off with a bang by offering three free games till January 9th.

These titles include Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition and Steep. The first two games are remasters of Vigil Games’ classics offering exploration, hack and slash combat and puzzle-solving. If either game interests you, then it might be worth checking out Darksiders 3 or Darksiders Genesis.

Ubisoft’s Steep is fairly different from the company’s usual offerings. It’s an extreme sports title with activities like wingsuit flying and snowboarding. Various challenges and disciplines along with different playable characters and multiplayer offer some decent competitive action. Check out our initial review of the game here.

Ubisoft will be returning to E3 on June 10th at 1 PM PST. Along with recently announced titles like Ghost Recon Breakpoint, there will be “exclusive content” showcased for games like For Honor, Rainbow Six Siege, and Tom Clancy’s The Division 2. Check out the line-up trailer below.

We can also expect to see some game updates for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Steep, and Trials Rising. What’s interesting is Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot making an appearance at the end, telling us to expect “one or two more things.” What? You didn’t think they’d spill the beans that easily, did you?

Rumours have been running rampant for a while now about Watch Dogs 3 and a new Splinter Cell being revealed. While the latter is looking less and less likely by the day, it seems to be a pretty packed show by the looks of things. Now the real question is whether Assassin’s Creed 2020 will be announced as well. As always, stay tuned for more details.

The extreme sports game is free to all PC players.

It’s interesting to think back to how many snowboarding and skateboarding games we used to have. EA’s SSX and Activision’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater used to be some of the highest selling games on the market, getting multiple sequels and spinoffs. It goes to show how much the tastes of mainstream audiences can change in a relatively short time, since those types of games have mostly vanished. But for those who are looking for some extreme sports in these starved times are getting a little gift from Ubisoft in the form of a free copy of their last extreme sports title, Steep.

Steep was released in 2016 to mostly solid reviews. It’s a snowboarding title that takes place in a vast environment as you find challenges in the Alps and Denali. While snowboarding is the game’s main focus, it also includes skiing, paragliding, and wingsuit flying. If you enjoy the base game, it also got several expansions that took you to locations like Japan and Korea, with some wild add-ons, like rocket-powered wingsuits, base jumping, and sledding.

Steep is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The PC version of the game is free via Uplay from now to May 22nd.

It’s not a spectacular month, but it will do.

While Xbox Live’s Games with Gold is having arguably its best month yet come January 2019, offering Celeste, a legitimate game of the year contender for 2018, as one of the free months on offer, Sony are offering for PS Plus… not much that really matches up, to be honest.

The company has taken the wraps off of the January 2019 lineup for PS Plus, and it’s… okay, not too special. PS4 owners get Steep and Portal Knights, neither of which is too remarkably good or bad. PS3 owners get a better deal, with Amplitude (the rhythm game by Harmonix) and Zone of the Enders HD Collection (a remaster of the two mech action games by Hideo Kojima for PS2), while Vita owners get Fallen Legion: Flames of Rebellion, and Super Mutant Alien Assault. I get the feeling they’ve run out of Vita games at this point.

With PS3 and PS Vita PS Plus support coming to an end later in 2019, hopefully Sony can make the final few months for those systems notable. Maybe give away Persona 4 Golden or something. You can check out a video highlighting this month’s lineup for yourself below.

Sony seem to REALLY like Mafia 3, don’t they?

Sony really seems to like Mafia 3. They gave it away as part of the PS Plus lineup a few months ago, and now, they will also be offering it as part of the PS Now lineup in November. Any subscriber to the service can now play Mafia 3, as well as LocoRoco Remastered (the remaster of the underrated PSP game from Sony), and Steep, Ubisoft’s extreme sports game that’s not the best, but hey, it’s good enough.

You can see the full list of the games below. These games can be streamed to PC and PS4, and if you are on PS4, you can also download them and play them locally ala Game Pass (since none of the additions are PS3 games, which obviously can’t be downloaded or locally emulated). Sony are also finally fixing the browsing list for the PS Now catalog, which is now never 700 games, via Collections, which organizes the games via platform, genre, whether or not they can be downloaded, and so on.

If you’re interested in PS Now, perhaps your hand will be forced because Sony is now, as mentioned, allowing downloads of PS4 games on the service, making it a Game Pass competitor.

Three Steep World Tours are ready to be conquered over three months.

Seasons are the flavour for games these days so why should Ubisoft’s open world Winter sports title Steep be any different? Season 1 will begin next week and there will be limited time challenges to participate in. Successfully completing them will earn equipment like the Freeride World Tour set and much more.

Starting April 1st till June 29th, players can expect three tournaments – Freeride, Pro Racer and Snow Park – which are similar to other Steep World Tours. Three Steps Challenges include Freeride, Wingsuit and Freestyle which increase the reward depending on how high your score is.

Finally, the Three Completion Challenges for Exploration, Race and Freestyle while will take time to complete but offer fairly big rewards. Different challenge styles will be active for different months – April is Freeride World Tour, May is Steep World Tour Pro Racer and Steep World Tour Snowpark. For more information on Season 1 of Steep, check out the trailer below.

Steep Road to the Olympics will have an Open Beta test until December 4th.

Since Steep’s release back in late 2016, Ubisoft has been continually updating the game and now the title is receiving a major expansion in the form of Road to the Olympics. This is the official DLC for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018. It will also have an open beta test that will start from tomorrow till December 4th. You can check out the trailer for the open beta below.

Additionally, the enhancements for the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X versions of the game will also be added along with the update. The Open Beta grants players access to five challenges from the expansion and will also allow players to freely roam a select area of the Japan Map. Furthermore, the player who is atop the downhill leaderboards at the end of the Open Beta will have a chance to win a ticket to the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 in South Korea.

Servers will open at 17:00 GMT for the Open Beta while the expansion pack itself can be bought for £26.99. Other editions such as the Steep Winter Games Edition (which includes the base game and expansion) and Steep Winter Games Gold Edition (includes the base game, expansion and season pass) cost £39.99 and £59.99 respectively.
