The tale of Jack Garland and friends is finally available for Steam players on PC after one-year exclusivity to the Epic Games Store.

Square Enix’s bizarre yet oddly compelling Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is now available for PC players via Steam. Developed by Team Ninja, the action RPG was previously exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC. Along with the Standard Edition, the Deluxe Edition with the Season Pass is also on sale (sadly, no discounts for any of them).

As a prequel to the first Final Fantasy, it focuses on Jack Garland and his party, who seek to kill Chaos. Over time, they meet other characters, Neon and Sophia, while looking to restore the four Crystals of the world. The story gained notoriety for its writing, particularly Jack’s dialogue.

In terms of combat, it’s vaguely Souls-like, with the ability to equip different classes, execute enemies when their break gauge is empty, and temporarily steal magic. Check out our review for the base game here. The Season Pass includes three more story-based DLC – Trials of the Dragon King, Wanderer of the Rift and Different Future – which add new bosses, missions and features.

A little over a year on from its original launch, the Soulslike action RPG is coming to Steam in a few weeks' time.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin saw the launch of its third and final expansion in January, bringing an end to Square Enix and Team Ninja’s plans for the Soulslike action RPG’s post-launch support. In the near future though, it will be seeing another milestone release and coming to a new platform.

When it originally launched roughly a year ago, on PC, Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin was available exclusively via the Epic Games Store- that, however, will be changing soon. Square Enix has announced that the spinoff title will be releasing for Steam on April 6, so those who’ve been waiting for a Steam release before jumping in to its offerings won’t have to wait much longer.

It’s also been confirmed that across all platforms, the title will be available at a permanently discounted price going forward. Meanwhile, a new trailer has also been released- check it out below.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Check out our review of the game through here.

Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura says a sequel could be greenlit if sales prove "that this is a title that has really resonated with everyone."

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin may not have pulled up any trees with its critical and commercial performance, but there’s a decent contingent of people who enjoyed the Soulslike action RPG spinoff for what it was. Square Enix has now released its third and final DLC, Different Future, but what’s next for the game? Could a sequel possibly be on the cards?

It’s not completely out of the question. As reported by Noisy Pixel, during a recent livestream commemorating the aforementioned DLC’s launch, Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin producer Tetsuya Nomura thanked fans for their support of the game, remarking that many are even hoping for a sequel. And could a sequel actually happen? According to Nomura, if there is enough support and demand from fans, Square Enix may very well end up greenlighting one.

“When Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin first came out, there was a lot of negative bashing, especially online,” Nomura said. “However, I’m pleased to say that everyone watching this livestream has grown very fond of Jack and his friends. So much so that some would love to see a sequel of [the title].

“And if you do want that to happen, then it would certainly help if one person watching this spread the news to 10 other people. If word of mouth about the game spreads through the DLC’s completion, proving that this is a title that has really resonated with everyone, there may be a time when we can meet again. I personally would love to work with Kumabe-san from Koei Tecmo again.”

Whether or not Stranger of Paradise does manage to see the sort of sustained sales over the coming period that Square Enix might be hoping for remains to be seen, but a hypothetical sequel is certainly an intriguing prospect. The action RPG has plenty of room for improvement, yes, but where its combat and progression mechanics are concerned, there’s quite a bit to like and build on in future projects as well. Of course, for now there’s no concrete word on whether that will actually happen, so we’re just going to have to wait and watch.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Check out the launch trailer for the final DLC for Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, titled Different Future.

In the lead up to Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin getting its new expansion, Different Future, Square Enix has released a launch trailer for the DLC. The trailer, which shows off some of the DLC’s gameplay, also features a few story beats. Check it out below.

The Different Future DLC hopes to act as an ending to the story arc that was first started in Trials of the Dragon King. On the gameplay side of things, the DLC will also feature three new jobs, weapons, and a new synthesis function.

Different Future was first announced back in December with a short teaser trailer, where it also got its release date. Much like the other DLCs for Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, Different Future can’t be purchased individually. Rather, players will have to buy the whole season pass.

Different Future is the third major DLC release for Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, following up on Trials of the Dragon King and Wanderer of the Rift. Different Future also essentially brings an end to the promised post-launch support for the game.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

These games held some promise, but whether they were above average or downright bad, they all disappointed in various ways.

It’s a miracle that many titles delivered on their promises this year, given all the expectations and hype. Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Tunic, and more had all surpassed expectations. Unfortunately, like last year, there were disappointments. Some were minor and somewhat expected, while others felt shocking. Here are 15 of the most disappointing games to release this year.

The Callisto Protocol

Arguably one of the more anticipated games of the year, The Callisto Protocol was talked up a fair amount by Striking Distance Studios. With talent like Dead Space co-creator Glen Schofield involved, it seemed like a slam-dunk…until we played the game. And endured its awkward combat, lacklustre enemy variety, and lame final boss, all in a span of a few hours instead of the promised 12 to 14. Worst of all, performance was atrocious on PC with severe stuttering issues and crashes. The Callisto Protocol isn’t the worst game ever, but it ranked above average, which felt even worse.

Martha is Dead

LKA’s psychological horror looked special, and the setting of a German-occupied Italy during World War 2 could have presented something unique. Sadly, things fall apart after the opening, with the middle act suffering in pacing due to lots of meandering and wandering. Some controls don’t feel great, and the camera system also feels too complex for the amount used. Also, despite the handful of gruesome scenes, the real horror is reserved for the beginning and the end. Again, great ideas and an interesting setting with disturbing material, but the mishmash of other ideas and story elements dull the experience.

Salt and Sacrifice

Look, I’m not saying I expected another Souls-like Metroidvania that built on the first game and also had a large, interconnected world. Salt and Sacrifice kind of does that, but also inserts Monster Hunter-like elements when it comes to hunting Mages. The art style is polished, and the premise is intriguing. Yet, it doesn’t come together as well as its predecessor, either due to the progression, annoying combat aspects (like getting juggled in the air) or the controls.

Somerville

When you hear the story behind developer Jumpship, founded by former Playdead co-founder Dino Patti, you want to root for Somerville. Patti’s experience includes Inside and Limbo, and despite this not being a full side-scrolling platformer, the premise and aesthetics look great. However, the plot leaves much to be desired (especially with the “ending”), and the controls are not good. Having to deal with numerous issues and bugs doesn’t help either.

Trek to Yomi

Like Ghost of Tsushima, Trek to Yomi takes heavy inspiration from Akira Kurosawa’s work, both in presentation and aesthetics. The monochrome art looks incredible, and the camera work is impeccable. The problem is the rest of the game, specifically the combat, which feels annoying and clunky. Add boring enemy variety and level design, and you have a beautiful-looking side-scroller without any heart or soul.

Rainbow Six Extraction

One didn’t expect much from Rainbow Six Extraction. After all, it had been delayed multiple times, and the prospect of taking a limited-time event and turning it into a paid game still felt scummy. However, as it turns out, Ubisoft went even lower than my lowest expectations. Terrible AI, damage-sponge bosses, awful objectives, a complete lack of tactical gameplay, bugs – the list goes on. Extraction’s biggest achievement is how it manages to be so disappointing and yet so forgettable, with many still expressing surprise that it even launched this year.

Roller Champions

When Roller Champions was first announced, it seemed stylish, even if the concept of a 3v3 Roller Derby-style multiplayer game didn’t sound so intriguing. Then it got delayed again and again. When it finally landed this year, Roller Champions was a complete dud. It wasn’t downright awful, but nothing was captivating about it. The lack of polish, mode variety, and features like stats or quick chat at launch ensured a plummet into irrelevance.

Resident Evil Village – The Winters’ Expansion

We all had hopes for The Winters’ Expansion, particularly Shadows of Rose, which took place several years after the base game. Alas, not only did it recycle environments and fail to advance the overarching story, but it was only a handful of hours long. That would be fine if the expansion were cheaper. But the Third-Person Mode for the base game felt too clunky and awkward, and the additional Mercenaries content was simply good without being worthwhile alone.

Scorn

Announced in 2014, Scorn has been in development for a long time, but the disgusting art style, inspired by H. R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński, made it stand out in the sea of graphically beautiful titles. Unfortunately, its annoying combat and checkpoints, not to mention the frustrating puzzles, hamper it tremendously. It feels like a conflict between the art design and gameplay, resulting in an underwhelming – and short – experience.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns

Weird as it sounds, I always felt there was something off about Marvel’s Midnight Suns. This is even after all the gameplay streams showcased the myriad of tactics available. On release, it revealed some pretty terrible writing, not to mention an excessive amount of padding and grinding for something as simple as card rerolls. The combat was still decent, but performance issues and shabby visual quality held it back.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

The first-ever seamless open-world title for Pokemon. Three paths to follow with the freedom to choose. The start of the ninth generation. All these promises and more were made for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and the results were…iffy. While the stories and gameplay felt good, the sheer range of technical and performance issues, shoddy presentation, and illusion of free choice made it feel like a severe downgrade from Pokemon Legends: Arceus and even Sword and Shield.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin

When rumors of a Final Fantasy Souls-like action RPG from Team Ninja, including the minds behind Nioh, first circulated, I was stoked. There’s no way Square Enix could mess this up, right? Unfortunately, they did, with a weird combat system, horribly optimized visuals, and some of the worst writing either company has put out (which is saying something). Subsequent updates and DLC improved it, but this is still a major disappointment considering what could have been.

FIFA 23

Since it’s the last title as part of EA Sports’ collaboration with FIFA, you would think FIFA 23 would be a worthwhile end to a long-running, mostly-controversial series. It’s not. New mechanics like the PowerShot, Active Touch and World Cup modes were nice additions. But it’s still microtransaction-heavy, as evidenced by the changes to chemistry in Squad-Building Challenges. The PC version still has several issues, and the Nintendo Switch version continues to be a joke. For those who enjoyed FIFA, it’s more FIFA and still sells millions, but it’s still lacklustre.

Rune Factory 5

Ever since the delay to its Western release, I had some decent hopes for Rune Factory 5. It’s fully 3D with a more impressive presentation and combat. Unfortunately, it also feels overtly grindy, while the premise and overall gameplay aren’t a big enough step up over its predecessor. The performance of Nintendo Switch left much to be desired (with the PC version faring better). Long story short, it’s not a terrible game but could have done much more. Those looking to discover what makes the series great are better off sticking to Rune Factory 4 Special.

Gotham Knights

Believe it or not, there were some expectations on Gotham Knights. Even for those who knew it was more of an action RPG than a brand-new Batman: Arkham, there was that promise of exploring Gotham City and beating up bad guys. Gotham Knights bungled this with bad dialogue, annoying combat mechanics (counters? What are those?), clunky stealth, and grinding for things that should be available by default. Worst of all? It completely wastes the Court of Owls as antagonists.

The game's third and final expansion will bring a new weapon type and Job, additional difficulty modes and areas, and more.

Since its release earlier in the year, Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin has received two major expansions with Trials of the Dragon King and Wanderer of the Rift, and soon, it’ll be completing the set and closing the book on its post-launch support. The Soulslike action RPG’s third and final expansion, Different Future, is releasing in January, a little over a month from now.

The expansion will bring the arc that kicked off with the aforementioned Trials of the Dragon King to a close, and of course, in addition to its new story content, it’ll also pack gameplay additions. That includes new locations and difficulty levels, as well as a new Warrior of Light skin, while the new Musketeer Job also gets added to the game’s already impressive list of Jobs. The Job, of course, also brings with it guns as a new weapon type. Check out the trailer below for a glimpse at what the DLC will have on offer.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin – Different Future launches for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC on January 27. Like the previous two expansions, it cannot be purchased separately, and is only available as part of the season pass.

Battle a tough new boss in Gilgamesh, explore the random dungeons of the Rift Labyrinth, and summon monsters into battle.

The second paid DLC for Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, Wanderer of the Rift, is now available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC. It tells an alternate story of our heroes as they seemingly become the Gods of Chaos. In the meantime, a new activity called the Rift Labyrinth opens up while a new boss, Gilgamesh, can be challenged.

The Rift Labyrinth features randomly generated dungeons, so there is some replay value. There’s also “Gilgamesh” difficulty, where enemies are higher-leveled, and foes called Chaos Monsters also appear. Slaying them grants improved rewards, and you’ll also discover new Relics blessed by summons for higher stats.

The Blue Mage is the newest Job, which can learn and use enemy abilities. You can bond with monsters, raising your affinity to summon them into battle with Monster Bells. There’s even more in store, including the new Dimension Bringer skill, which slows enemies and increases the damage dealt with each combo ability.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin has one more paid DLC remaining with Different Future. Along with the other paid DLC, it’s only purchasable through the Season Pass.

Expansion pass owners can expect a new mission, randomly generated dungeons in the Rift Labyrinth, the new "Gilgamesh" difficulty, and new Relics.

Team Ninja’s second DLC for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, Wanderer of the Rift, releases on October 26th. Before that, Square Enix released a new launch trailer and details, outlining all of the content that can be expected.

First, there’s a new mission, “Gilgamesh, Wanderer of the Rift,” where players will battle against Gilgamesh. He’s tough, fighting with swords, spears, and the occasional missile. There’s also the Rift Labyrinth consisting of randomly constructed dungeons tied to a new story arc.

In the new “Gilgamesh” difficulty, you’ll encounter “chaos monsters” throughout missions and the Rift Labyrinth, which are more dangerous but confer better rewards when slain. Enemy levels are increased, but you can also obtain new Relics blessed by summons like Odin, Bahamut and Ifrit. The higher the blessing value, the better the results.

A new Job, the Blue Mage, becomes available after progressing enough through the Rift Labyrinth. It allows for learning enemy abilities and using them through Soul Shield or various accessories. You can also gather Monster Bells to summon a monster in battle, though this involves locating a Summonstone and completing an event. Conversing and feeding a monster will raise your affinity with it, earning Monster Bells for summoning them.

Wanderer of the Rift is only purchasable with the Season Pass. One more DLC, Different Future, will release later, so stay tuned for more details.

It adds the new Labyrinth of Dimensions dungeon, the Blue Mage Job, summons, new Chaotic Monsters, new equipment, and much more.

Team Ninja’s second paid DLC for Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, Wanderer of the Rift, is out on October 26th. It adds a new dungeon called the Labyrinth of Dimensions which “randomly configures” one’s path to “unlock pieces of the story.” Which sounds a lot like a randomly generated dungeon, if we’re being honest. Check out the trailer below.

A new Job, Blue Mage, is being added along with new equipment which bestows new abilities. Players can also use a Summoning Stone to summon “special monsters” into battle (after fighting them, of course). New Chaotic Monsters are being introduced, which promise a more “diverse” challenge, along with some new bosses.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC. Check out our review here. Wanderer of the Rift is purchasable only with the Season Pass, which includes Trials of the Dragon King and the upcoming Different Future DLC. Stay tuned for more details on the latter in the coming months.
