Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination's next Super Mario movie could be named after the beloved 1991 2D sidescrolling platformer.

A little over a year ago, Nintendo, Universal Pictures, and Illumination announced, surprising no one, that they were following up on the stupendous success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie with a sequel that was due out in 2026. Details on the movie have been scarce since then, but a crucial tidbit has seemingly now emerged.

On the official NBC Universal website, a report was published highlighting the lineup of titles shown off at the recent NBCUniversal’s 2025-2026 Upfront showcase event, and mentioned among several upcoming movies is Super Mario World. In case you were wondering, no, that isn’t a title that has been officially confirmed for the animated film so far.

“An exciting range of films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation and Illumination were presented, including Megan 2.0, Nobody 2, Bad Guys 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Black Phone 2, HIM, The Phoenician Scheme, Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions,” the website reads.

In October last year, actor Keegan-Michael Key, the voice of Toad in the Mario movies, said of the sequel that it will be “a little broader in scope” and that it will “widen out the universe.” A title such as Super Mario World would certainly fit with that kind kind of scope, while it would, of course, also be a great way to exploit the nostalgia of fans of the beloved SNES 2D platforming classic of the same name.

For now, we’re going to have to wait for official word on what the next Mario movie will be called and what it’ll bring to the table, but hopefully the wait won’t be too long. Stay tuned for more updates.

It's all about the weird as heck journey with these fast travel methods.

Fast travel, especially in open world games, is something we take for granted. It’s always assumed that you’ll be able to quickly jump between two points on a huge open map because of course you would. Who in their right mind would walk, drive or sail everywhere? In some games, fast travel is a process befitting the world but that doesn’t make it any less weird. Let’s take a look at some of the weirdest methods of fast travel here.

Fragile Jump – Death Stranding

In Death Stranding, fast travel is made possible by teleportation which isn’t all that odd (it’s the future, after all). However, teleporting is done via an umbrella owned by Fragile. Following some events in Chapter 3, Sam unlocks the ability to fast travel to safe houses by simply looking at the wall where the umbrella hangs and hitting the prompt. Fragile will then jump in with her umbrella, she and Sam will touch heads and off you go. That this isn’t even remotely the weirdest thing in Death Stranding is an understatement.

Because getting your ass handed to you by the same boss fifteen times in a row isn't challenging enough.

Though there are many gamers who prefer their games to be breezy enjoyable experiences more than anything else, there are others still who want nothing more than a challenge. So much so, that they go out of their ways to make the games they’re playing much more challenging than they ordinarily are, oftentimes in bizarre and ridiculous fashion. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at times gamers did just that.

SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE

It’s not like Sekiro is a game that is lacking in challenge- not by a long shot. It sparked a debate about how important accessibility is in games when it launched, after all. But there are some people who clearly felt it wasn’t challenging enough (somehow). Take YouTuber Caesium, for instance. They played Sekiro and beat some of the game’s hardest bosses- but they did so using a steering wheel controller. Yes. Sekiro. With a steering wheel.

Mario's list of crimes is long and disturbing. Let's look at some of them here.

Mario is one of, if not the most illustrious icon in gaming. He’s been around for decades with tons of games to support his legacy. However, he’s also evil as all sin, committing atrocity after atrocity for his own personal gain. Let’s take a look at 15 of the most evil things Mario has done in his career.

Locking Donkey Kong Up

Ever wondered what Mario did after rescuing Daisy in the first Donkey Kong? Well, he lifts the primate away in a cage, imprisoning and likely preparing him for further torture. We get the whole aspect of Donkey Kong throwing barrels and stealing Mario’s girlfriend but do the King Kong references really have to go this far?

These games are so well balanced that adding a difficulty setting may very well spoil the experience.

You run home on the launch day of a brand new game, thrilled that the launch has finally come. Pop the disk into your system and settle in for a nice long session. But before any of that, there’s a lot of the time you have a choice to make. What’s your difficulty setting? While somewhat accepted today, the very idea of the player selecting their own difficulty is kind of strange, isn’t it? Before playing even a little bit of the game, you’re asking the player to make a major decision that could impact their entire experience. The problems with difficulty modes are numerous, but there’s a growing number of titles who have found creative ways around this, which we’re here to discuss today. Make sure to share your favourites in the comments below!

Super Meat Boy

As an early indy hit, Super Meat Boy had to earn all of the praise it got to show that smaller teams could be worth just as much attention. Super Meat Boy then had a lot of confidence in the mechanics surrounding the super tight platforming gameplay to not offer players a way to just cruise to the credits. Losing the idea of lives lives and allowing the player to restart the small stages roughly 12 times per second until the proverbial brick wall was beaten down allowed many to find their groove and not really even notice death.

"We'll just wait here, I guess. He's gotta run out of minions eventually."

Commanders, deities, demons – no matter which game you play, a boss fight is seemingly inevitable. That’s the proper thrill of it though. A boss fight is meant to be the culmination of your hero’s journey, an epic encounter to cap off the experience. Games like Shadow of the Colossus handle this trope deftly by featuring nothing but bosses and building to a dramatic climax.

However, there are some boss fights which rely on tough nuts and cookies to crack as often as they do mobs that endlessly spawn. Are they annoying? That depends on you but there are a good number of battles on here that could be irksome if you didn’t dispose of those endless minions during the fight.

Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.

Skolas (pre-nerf) – Destiny: House of Wolves

Before he was nerfed, Skolas was one of the single most frustrating bosses to face in Destiny. Not only was a level higher, thus increasing the damage he dealt while decreasing your own damage, but he had a near endless supply of minions around him at a time. The mechanics of the fight were also extremely stressful with mines, the devouring essence and, oh yeah, Solar Burn and Arc Burn modifiers. A patch would make Skolas much more manageable along with having enemies appear at fixed intervals.

One avid Mario player has set a world record for the lowest score in Super Mario World. Yes, that’s right, you aren’t supposed to break any brick, or the challenge will end up in a failure.

The user does this in a very creative way that makes the entire thing very enjoyable to watch.

This challenge was actually attempted on a Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The video is 28-min long, and features some of the most intriguing gameplay ever.

You have to hand it to crazy fans for doing something extraordinary. This can only be possible if you love a videogame, and know it inside out after playing it countless times.

I have to admit that this video made me extremely nostalgic and romantic – sort of fitting on a Valentine’s day, isn’t it?

Low Score Run:

If you would like to see the speed run record, check it out as well. It’s refreshing to see the game played the way it’s meant to be played, and extremely skillfully.
