Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has taken to YouTube to talk about why he believes online multiplayer isn't the right fit for the Smash Bros. franchise.

The Super Smash Bros. franchise, despite its immense success, has always suffered quite a few problems when it came to online multiplayer options. Series creator Masahiro Sakurai recently spoke about online multiplayer in the franchise in a recent video on creating video games.

Spotted by IGN, Sakurai’s latest video has him talking about Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which was released on the Nintendo Wii, and its online multiplayer implementation. In the video, Sakurai states that he does not feel that online multiplayer is a good fit for the Smash Bros. franchise.

“I don’t think online play and Smash Bros. are a very good fit for each other,” says Sakurai. “One of the best parts of Smash Bros. is how players can become champions among their friends. But being subjected to online competition can cause people to lose confidence, which isn’t great.”

Sakurai also goes on to talk about the implementation of multiplayer in the game, and how it uses full synchronous communication compared to the asynchronous communication used in Mario Kart games with online multiplayer. Full synchronous communication means that the timing for all player input is synchronised in every single frame.

Because of the network demands of Smash Bros. Sakurai states that online play in the games can often be patchy unless you’re playing with others not only in the same country, but in the same region as well.

Sakurai also speaks about other aspects of Super Smash Bros. Brawl in the video, including single-player content like the Subspace Emissary game mode. You can check out the video below.

Of the many years with big game releases, 2008 is arguably one of the most memorable. Let's take a look back on its most important titles.

It’s always nice to look back on the console generations gone by and marvel at the number of high profile releases each year. This is especially so when looking at 2008 which had excellent follow-ups in established franchises and awesome new IPs. Let’s examine 15 of the best games that year along with what made them so great.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Melee served as the series’ watershed moment, providing a near-perfect combination of gameplay, graphics and music. Super Smash Bros. Brawl didn’t win over everyone with some of its changes (hello, tripping) but it was superior in a number of other aspects. Subspace Emissary is an incredible story-driven mode till this day; the base roster was large and grew even further with the addition of non-Nintendo characters like Solid Snake, Sonic the Hedgehog and Cloud Strife; and the Stage Builder was introduced for creating one’s own levels. The Nintendo Wii already had a number of great exclusives but Super Smash Bros. Brawl is definitely one of its finest.

It's also Nintendo's third highest-selling title in terms of launch month physical dollar and unit sales.

The NPD Group’s March 2020 sales data for video game software and hardware in the United States is in. As per VentureBeat, Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the big winner, being the best-selling game of the month even without digital sales being tracked. Despite launching only last month, it’s already the second best-selling title of the year.

Much more impressive is that in terms of launch month physical dollar and unit sales for Nintendo published games, the title was the third highest in sales. It’s just behind Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Super Smash Bros. Brawl in that regard, which is pretty crazy. Not only is Animal Crossing: New Horizons the best-selling game in the franchise’s history but it’s dollar sales in March surpassed lifetime sales of all previous titles.

Overall, March 2020 was a good month for video game software sales, which came to $739 million with a 34 percent growth compared to the same period last year. This also marks the highest tracked software spending since March 2011 ($787 million). The top best-selling games for March 2020 in terms of dollar sales can be seen below:
