Codenamed Pool Party, the game was going to be focused on esports and had a 70-80-person team working on it until its cancellation in May.

Riot Games is set to expand the League of Legends universe further still with a fighting game next year in the form of 2XKO, though reportedly, until not too long ago, it wasn’t the only fighting game set in the League universe that the company was working on.

Journalist Mikhail Klimentov has claimed that Riot Games was working on a platform fighting game codenamed Pool Party that was inspired by Super Smash Bros. before cancelling it earlier this year. Specifically, the company was aiming to focus the game on esports and take cues from Super Smash Bros. Melee in particular, and had a team of 70-80 people working on it until its cancellation in May.

Klimentov claims that though Pool Party was originally envisioned as a hardcore platform fighter with a keen emphasis placed on esports, Riot Games leadership was alarmed by the failure of MultiVersus, WB Games’ free-to-play Smash-inspired platform fighter. Over the course of Pool Party’s development, attempts were made to introduce more casual elements, much to the dismay of many in the development team, including even party game elements.

Riot Games’ senior comms director Joe Hixson said on the report, “We always have a number of projects in various phases of R&D, and spinning projects up and down happens multiple times a year.”

Klimentov’s report claims that about half of Pool Party’s development team received offers to be reassigned to other projects within Riot Games following the title’s cancellation, with others looking for roles elsewhere through the company’s internal job board.

Join us for a look back on a great year of gaming.

Video games have gone through their share of changes and evolutions over the years. Nevertheless, it’s always nice to look back and appreciate the games of old which either shaped genres as we know them today or provided unforgettable experiences. So two decades later, let’s take a look back at 15 of the best games from 2001.

Halo: Combat Evolved

From being a third person shooter on the Mac to a first person shooter exclusive to Xbox, Bungie’s IP saw its fair share of changes. When it debuted, it presented incredible gun play, well-crafted missions and large sandbox-like levels that rewarded all kinds of play-styles. All of this along with Marty O’ Donnell’s stellar score turned Halo into a juggernaut and Microsoft into a venerable gaming force for years to come.

These titles looked simply jaw-dropping back in the day.

Back when the Xbox first entered the industry and Sony was building up the PlayStation 2, Nintendo made its mark in a unique way. Eschewing DVDs in favor of proprietary miniDVDs and utilizing a box-like design with a handle, the GameCube was something special. It didn’t skimp on the powerful technology, producing some truly amazing games that still stand out. Let’s take a look at 15 such games here.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 2

Of the many titles that convinced fans of the GameCube’s power, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 2 sits near the top. Improved texture work, more detailed ships and increased draw distance all provided substantial upgrades over its predecessor. But it was the addition of bump-mapping that provided that extra bit of oomph, pushing photo-realism that much closer to the films. Even if you weren’t a Star Wars fan, Rogue Squadron 2 had to be seen to be believed.
