The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD have been rumoured for the Nintendo Switch for over a year.

For a while now, Switch ports of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD have been in heavy demand. Rumours have claimed time and time again that both HD remasters are eventually going to come to the Switch, and with the sequel to Breath of the Wild having been pushed back into next year, questions regarding the same have started kicking up again.

It seems, however, that Tantalus – the studio that developed the aforementioned Twilight Princess HD for the Wii U, and more recently, brought Skyward Sword HD to the Switch – has quashed those rumours- or at least their involvement in any Switch port for the game, if one is indeed in the works. Speaking recently during a recent episode of the Fragments of Silicon podcast (via Nintendo Everything), Tantalus CEO Tom Crago said that while the studio would love to bring the remaster to the Switch, it doesn’t seem to be a priority for Nintendo.

When asked if Nintendo has approached Tantalus about bringing Twilight Princess HD to the Switch, Crago said: “No, and look, we’d obviously love to do that, but that hasn’t been a priority for Nintendo – or at least not in conversations that they’ve had with us.

“The way it works with our friends over there is we’ll jump at any opportunity we can to work on one of their titles. There’s a constant dialog between our two companies. Often there’s a little bit of time that passes between titles, and there might be other ideas that are kicked around, but in the case of Skyward Sword, some time passed and then the email comes: ‘Would you be interested in considering bringing Skyward Sword on to Switch?’ To which the answer is of course: ‘Yes we would.’ And then we enter into the conversations with Nintendo around what that might look like and eventually we get underway. So it was similar in a lot of senses in terms of how Twilight Princess (on Wii U) came to fruition.”

Those hoping to see the remasters making their way to the Switch can, of course, argue that Nintendo may very well have taken on the porting job themselves, or contacted a different studio for the same. Either way, if the Switch ports are indeed coming, we can probably say with some surety that Tantalus won’t be involved, based on Crago’s comments.

A little under a year ago, reports were claiming that the Wind Waker and Twilight Princess remasters were still scheduled to launch for the Switch, but of course, there have been no official announcements from Nintendo regarding the same in the time since then.

In North America, that is.

The tenth anniversary of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is almost here- and in celebration, we get The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, which is a full HD remastering of the classic Gamecube adventure. The game launches exclusively on the Wii U next month, and assuming you don’t want to get your copy with an Amiibo, the digital copy is not a bad proposition at all (you’d even end up saving $10 in the process).

If the digital copy is what you want, then the good news is, it is available to pre-load in North America right now. The page for the game is now up on the eShop, and the game will come in at 4.5GB, which is a whopping three times the file size it had on the Gamecube.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD is expected to be followed by the launch of The Legend of Zelda for Wii U (and, it is speculated, the NX) later this year.

A flawed masterpiece, but without the flaws this time.

The original Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was a massively ambitious game that would have been among the best games ever made, and the greatest Zelda title ever, had it not been for some major failings. Some of these were structural- the game was extremely easy, it had a barren overworld, its pacing was broken, and so on; other things were more minor, but still ones which all added cumulatively to make the game feel annoying. These included poor controls, chests with rupees in them resetting themselves if you couldn’t claim all the money in them, and more.

Those minor problems, at least, are going to be resolved in the upcoming HD remake (we already know that a lot of the major, structural ones, like easy difficulty, are going to be addressed in Twilight Princess HD too). In an interview that series director Eiji Aonuma had with GamesMaster, it was confirmed that a lot of the more minor problems in the game would also be fixed in Twilight Princess HD– these include issues such as the original controls Epona and swimming, both of which drew a lot of ire.

“Looking back now, getting the controls for both land and water just right has proven to be a big challenge throughout the series,” Aonuma said.

Aonuma also confirmed there would be more changes.

“In the original, if your wallet was full and you opened a chest that contained Rupees, the Rupees would remain in the chest and its lid would close. The problem here being that in previous games players used open chests to know they’d visited a location, and this change meant they could no longer do that. Aonuma and his team considered this and reimplemented chests that remain open after you interact with them.”

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD launches in March for the Wii U.

More footage of the HD port arrives.

The HD port for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, one of Nintendo’s greatest Zelda titles of all time, will be out this March courtesy of Tantalus and a new story trailer has been released to tell you what’s going on. If you want to admire the brand-spanking new HD visuals instead, you can do that as well.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD will release alongside a limited edition version which include the Wolf Link Amiibo. This can be used to unlock an exclusive dungeon in-game and any progress saved to the Amiibo will factor into the upcoming Zelda Wii U which is releasing this year. Exactly how it will remains to be seen. The game is still looking pretty sweet on Wii U regardless.

Twilight Princess HD will be out on March 4th 2016 for the Wii U. What are your thoughts on the story trailer? Let us know in the comments below.
