Based on Dragon Quest 3: The Seeds of Salvation, the story is chronologically the first and sees players as Erdrick. After their father, the great hero Ortega failed to slay the archfiend Baramos, they must rise to the occasion. You can recruit other NPCs to your party to help out, as they assume other Vocations like Mage, Martial Artist, Thief, etc.

Aside from the overhauled visuals, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake offers numerous new features, including capturing monsters and fighting with them in Monster Arenas, the new Monster Wrangler Vocation, tactics for party members, and more. As the prequel to the very first Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest 3 is the first chronological entry in the Erdrick Trilogy, and sees players playing as the child of Ortega, a legendary warrior who once set out on a quest to defeat the archfiend Baramos, but was unable to actually finish his mission. Now, it falls to you to take up your father’s quest and finish what he started.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is, as you would expect, also going to faithfully recreate the original’s old-school JRPG gameplay, which means you can expect plenty of overworld exploration, a variety of different towns and dungeons to visit, turn-based combat against many different monster types, and more. There’s also a Vocations system at play, which will let you set your party members with a number of different classes, each bringing their own unique abilities, including a new Vocation in the form of the Monster Wrangler.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake will launch on November 14 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC, with Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake set to release sometime in 2025. 

Combat is showcased throughout and harkens back to old-school Dragon Quest, down to the perspective on attacks. Of course, the remake offers more than just revamped visuals (which still look gorgeous, especially in the Underground Lake with its real-time lighting and shadows). In combat, players can alter the battle speed, opting for Fast and Ultra-Fast alongside Normal speed.

Those who prefer an indirect approach can assign different Tactics to party members, from conserving MP to going all-out with their attacks. If you want full control, select “Follow Orders.” It’s a nice approach to auto-battling that affords different degrees of control.

The demo starts off in the town of Romaria, with the party departing and travelling across the overworld in search of their quarry, the outlaw known as Robbin’ ‘Ood. Their quest takes them to Skyfell Tower, where, upon some exploration and battles against a variety of foes, the party finally duels with Robbin’ ‘Ood himself. 

In addition to showing the aforementioned section (which also includes new gameplay footage for the newly added Monster Wrangler Vocation), the TGS demo showing also shows off Monster Arenas, where players can compose parties of monsters and have them battle other creatures, Pokemon-style. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is based on the 1988 RPG Dragon Quest 3: The Seeds of Salvation. It sees the player, Erdrick, embarking on a quest to defeat Baramos, the archfiend. The remake offers a gorgeous new art style akin to Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy, UI changes, choice of appearance for the protagonist, and the new Monster Wrangler Vocation, which can use monster abilities.

Among other things, the remake’s new gameplay trailer showcases customization options that will let you change your companions’ vocations, various aspects of their appearance, voice, and more. Also revealed is the new Monster Wrangler vocation, something that the original Dragon Quest 3 did not include. Monster Wranglers are capable of using monster-like abilities to both, damage foes and heal their allies. Check out the trailer below for a glimpse of what the vocation will have in store.

Ortega is Erdrick’s father, touted as the Hero of Aliahan. The episodes detail his journey to defeat Baramos, Archfiend and the biggest threat to the world. Along with battling Simão, Ortega also encounters various new enemies.

The volcano where he seemingly meets his end is also showcased, with a Garboyle teasing that it’s been a while since humans “dared” venture there. The exact extent and length of the new content are unknown, so stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake will, just as the original game did, allow you to play as one of two different variants of the protagonist, Erdrick. Though the original tied them to choosing your gender, the remake will not, instead simply calling the two options Type A and Type B. Square Enix has revealed key art for what both will look like, which you can check out below.

However, as part of the newly released gameplay and previews (via Gematsu), Square Enix confirmed “brand-new surprises” for those who play Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and then Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake. What those could be remains unknown – perhaps some decisions will carry over into the latter and unlock specific rewards.

Developed by Team Asano and Artdink on the same engine as Octopath Traveler, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake takes place in Aliahan. As the child of the legendary Ortega, players embark on a quest to defeat the Archfiend Baramos. The remake allows for customizing one’s appearance (with A and B options available), and the UI has seen several revamps.

Environments like forests, deserts and tundras await, with various dungeons, towers and caves to discover treasure. A day/night cycle is in place, and like the original, there are random battles. Upon entering battle, the perspective swaps between showing your party and a first-person view when dealing damage.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on November 14th. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
