"I'm really worried that they're gonna keep going with the Creation Engine," said Dean Carter when discussing possible new features.

Dean Carter, project lead on Fallout 4’s impressive total conversion mod Fallout: London, is worried that, when it comes to the next game, Bethesda might once again use its proprietary in-house Creation Engine. In an interview with Esports.net, Carter expressed a belief that it might be time for Bethesda to move on from the Creation Engine because it has been showing its age in recent times.

The Creation Engine first debuted as the game engine powering the incredibly-popular The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. Later, the same engine was also used to develop Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. The development of Starfield saw updates to the engine, with it being dubbed Creation Engine 2.

“I’m really worried that they’re gonna keep going with the Creation Engine,” said Carter when asked about what new features could show up in Fallout 5. “I understand that it is proprietary. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of pluses to it. I’m not just someone that’s going to sit there and lie and say it’s a terrible engine. It could be better, yes, but it’s not a bad engine but I do think it started to show its age. It needs to be overhauled somewhat.”

The idea fundamentally comes down to the fact that it might be difficult for Bethesda to add in new features to the engine that support new kinds of gameplay. For example, drivable vehicles would be a major addition that would require quite a bit of development on the Creation Engine.

“If they can overhaul it, then there’s no reason why they couldn’t push its limits and start adding things like drivable cars, maybe even metro systems like what we built in Fallout: London,” Carter continued. “I mean, if we found a way, I’m sure they could bring some of this stuff back into Fallout 5.”

Going into further detail about what kinds of technical issues could be fixed if Bethesda were to move over to a more modern game engine, Carter responded by saying “load screens and optimization, without a doubt,” before going into the painstaking work that the Fallout: London team did in its attempts to reduce load screens.

“That was our biggest complaint, rightly so from the public, that our game wasn’t optimized, and that’s because it was far too late in development to be able to change it, and it was because we as gamers did not want load screens,” he explained. “So we built things like the East Minster, which is in the Trafalgar Square area and is notoriously one of the more unstable areas in the mod, and we were just trying to literally slap down walls on anything to optimize it by the end.”

“That’s just because we didn’t want to have load screens. It would have really taken away from the vibe and we paid the price for it because the engine wasn’t suitable for what we wanted to achieve. If they have to upgrade it, that’s what they need to solve: get rid of the load screens and allow better optimization.”

In the same interview, Carter has also expressed his thoughts on the current state of the Fallout franchise, and how it might be better off if Bethesda were to sell the IP to a new developer.

"I need to express to everybody out there how difficult and what a journey that is for some of these big mod teams," said Todd Howard.

While the popularity of Fallout 4’s total conversion mod, Fallout: London, can’t be denied, Bethesda Game Studios’ Todd Howard has revealed that he hasn’t really gotten the chance to check it out yet. As part of a series of interviews surrounding the second season of Amazon Prime’s Fallout series, Howard spoke about the challenges involved in working on a project as ambitious as Fallout: London. When it comes to actually playing it for himself, however, Howard didn’t really say anything.

In the interview with IGN, Howard noted that he had only seen Fallout: London through some videos, and that he hadn’t yet played it. He did, however, go into detail about how difficult it is for a modding team to convert one game into something else altogether.

“I would say we look at a lot of the modding that’s going on, and when you have those total conversions – I just want to say how hard that is,” said Howard. “And so, the fact that it came out, first of all, because most of those never come out, and the fact that it came out… It seems a lot of fans love it. It’s just – I need to express to everybody out there how difficult and what a journey that is for some of these big mod teams to do stuff like that.”

Fallout: London, as you might have guessed from its title, converts the setting of Fallout 4 into England’s capital city. The story behind the mod’s central campaign revolves around the protagonist’s loss of memory, as well as the mysteries surrounding Smythe. The mod is a fully-featured one, and includes all of the gameplay mechanics you know and love from Fallout 4, from combat and VATS to base-building.

The team behind Fallout: London—Team FOLON—didn’t quite call the mod itself finished, however. The team has since released a major new DLC release for the mod, dubbed Rabbit & Pork. “SOOOO Big things are coming,” wrote Team FOLON on social media before Rabbit & Pork was officially released. “Fallout London‘s first DLC is getting closer, and the team at Team Folon Ltd has been working non-stop to bring the ‘Rabbit & Pork’ DLC to you all. Maybe some more surprises, too. Exciting times ahead. Stay tuned!”

Fallout: London was released back in July 2024, and a large part of the effort behind the total-conversion mod was in accurately and artistically depicting its setting of post-apocalyptic London. Alongside a new setting, the mod also brought an extension to the dialogue system, as well as a host of new quests and companions.

Shortly after its initial release, Fallout: London‘s developers had confirmed that the mod had seen more than a million downloads. Since its launch, the mod has also seen a host of updates, which have included bug fixes, performance improvements and even new quests. For more details about Fallout: London, check out our review. For more of our thoughts on the mod, check out why we believe it to be evidence that Bethesda needs to renew its focus on the future of the Fallout franchise.

Several new weapons and armor pieces await alongside 70 random encounters, player housing, new minigames and numerous improvements.

Out of nowhere, Team Folon has released free DLC for Fallout: London, its acclaimed total conversion for Fallout 4. It adds 80 new NPCs with over 8,000 lines of dialogue, all fully voiced; 30 new quests, weapons and armor pieces; 70 random encounters; and even player housing. Check out the release trailer below.

The new weapons include a Throwing Knife, Tennis Ball Pitcher, AutoMines, and even Portable Artillery. Players can also equip Greaser jackets and vests, a Traffic Cone Helmet, and a Guard Helmet bearing a resemblance to another Bethesda franchise. You can even partake in new minigames and own an animal companion.

Of course, the new content is just the tip of the iceberg as Team Folon has implemented “thousands” of bug fixes and improved stability based on feedback. Furthermore, it worked with Overwolf to create a custom launcher for easier installation.

Fallout: London is available for PC – check out our review for the launch version here. It became a strong success, crossing one million downloads.

Rabbit & Pork is the first of three planned major updates for Fallout London, and will be followed by Last Orders and Wildcard down the line.

After the immense success of Fallout London – a mod for Fallout 4 that brings with it an immense amount of content – the team behind the mod has announced that it is getting closer to releasing its first DLC. Taking to social media platform X, Team FOLON has revealed that the DLC, dubbed Rabbit & Pork, has been under development.

“SOOOO Big things are coming,” announced the mod team on X. “Fallout London‘s first DLC is getting closer, and the team at Team Folon Ltd has been working non-stop to bring the ‘Rabbit & Pork’ DLC to you all. Maybe some more surprises too. Exciting times ahead. Stay tuned!”

The post comes after the team first hinted at the Rabbit & Pork DLC back in December with an image that gave us the names of more planned updates. Other updates coming to Fallout London in the future include Last Orders and Wildcard. Team FOLON hasn’t yet provided more details on these updates, however.

Released last year, Fallout London has proven to be immensely successful, getting more than a million downloads by October. The mod has also been noteworthy in one of its developers getting hired by Bethesda before the mod even came out.

As its name might imply, Fallout London essentially brings the city of London in all of Fallout 4‘s post-apocalyptic glory to the game. While not canonical to the main Fallout storyline, Fallout London features a host of content, including quests, an expanded dialogue system, and new companions.

Fallout London can be downloaded and played for free as long as you own Fallout 4‘s Game of the Year edition. Players on Steam will have to deal with some minor issues in trying to get an earlier version of Fallout 4 installed than the next-gen update.

For more details on Fallout London, here’s why you should give it a try if you love the franchise. For a more in-depth look at the mod, check out our review.

The total conversion for Fallout 4 recently received a massive update, which restores missing dialogue and fixes other issues.

As Bethesda celebrates Fallout Day with a dedicated broadcast, GOG has revealed a new milestone for Fallout: London. The mod has exceeded one million downloads since launching in July for free.

As a total conversion for Fallout 4, Fallout: London features a brand new story set in post-apocalyptic London. Players scour the world, trying to discover their identity and unravel the mystery behind Smythe. While everything from the base game is intact, including combat and base-building, there are new characters to meet, factions to join, and side quests to complete.

It’s all the more enjoyable by the world design, which features numerous references to British culture, famous landmarks, and even cameos from Doctor Who actors. Check out our review for more details.

While the mod is finally out, Team FOLON continues to release updates. Its latest contains over 1,000 fixes, including restoring missing dialogue, correcting audio sound descriptors, implementing more ambient audio, and more. Check out the full change log here.

Here's everything you should know about this long-awaited total conversion mod.

With Bethesda Game Studios busy with Starfield post-launch content and the development of The Elder Scrolls 6, the chances of us getting a new Fallout game in the next few years are slim to none, but those looking for a new Fallout fix do have a solid alternative to turn to. Fallout 4’s expansion sized total conversion mod, Fallout London, has been in development and making waves for years, and now, it is finally out, allowing players to dive into a huge, entirely new, if unofficial, Fallout journey. Here, we’re going to go over all the key details that you should know about it.

STORY

Being an unofficial mod, Fallout London is obviously not going to be part of the series’ canon, but it is promising to tell an interesting story. The game is set in the year 2237, which puts it between the events of Fallout 1 and 2, and roughly 50 years before the events of Fallout 4. What makes it particularly interesting, however, is the fact that, as its name gives away, it’s set in London. Never in the history of the Fallout franchise have we stepped outside of the United States of America, so it should be interesting to see what Fallout London’s take on the post-apocalyptic remains of the English city are. From a narrative perspective, the mod focuses on several factions vying for control over London- but more on that in a bit. For now, let’s speak about London itself.

MAP DETAILS

Being able to explore the post-nuclear remains of the city of London in Fallout’s post-apocalyptic world is obviously one of the bigger draws of this mod, but what exactly can we expect from the map? According to the development team, Team FOLON, the mod’s map is going to be quite a sizeable one- as large as the map of Fallout 4’s base game and its Far Harbor DLC put together, in fact, which, if you’ve played those two, sounds like a huge play area. In total, the map is divided into 15 boroughs, and according to Team FOLON, there’s as much as 90 hours of content for players to get through.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL FALLOUT

Fallout: London is looking to leverage its London setting in some truly interesting ways- including giving us a glimpse into an alternative reality where we could see what a Fallout game set outside of the USA and the series’ focus on Americana-driven satire would look like. According to Team FOLON, you can expect plenty of elements that are usually staples of the franchise to be MIA in this game. For starters, in the Fallout lore the Forced Evolutionary Virus (or FEV) never made its way to London, which means all of the monstrosities and nightmarish creatures it created won’t be in the mod either. That includes Super Mutants and Deathclaws, among other things. Additionally, you can also expect Vault-Tec to have no presence in London whatsoever, since it’s an American company- though you can expect other, dingier underground vaults.

WEAPONS

Another area where it looks like Fallout London is attempting to deliver a different kind of Fallout experience is the combat, which, according to Team FOLON, is going to be much less focused on gunplay. Instead, players can expect melee weapons to play a much larger role, to the extent of being the only weapons you’ll be using at times. Gunplay has admittedly never been one of Fallout’s strengths, but the shooting did see significant improvements in Fallout 4 over previous titles, so it should be interesting to see how Fallout London fares with its combat changes.

FACTIONS

Factions have always played a huge role in any Fallout experience (or any Bethesda Game Studios RPG, for that matter), and yes, there will be plenty of those that players will be crossing paths with in Fallout: London as well. The most powerful of them all is the Gentry, who are the current rulers of London and descendants of the pre-war aristocracy and government, who are looking to rebuild the United Kingdom once more. Then there are the Tommies, a militia that has become a tool for the Gentry; 5th Column, an anarchist faction looking to tear down the established rule in London in order to rebuild a new empire; and the Camelot Republic, an underground resistance movement that is also looking to remove the Gentry from power and instead replace them with a new representative republic government.

MORE FACTIONS

Yes, there are still more factions to talk about- London is a big place after all, and there’s plenty of different groups with their own motivations and goals that you’ll be working with and against. There’s the Isle of Dogs Syndicate, for instance, which is essentially a gang in control of Millwall that runs a sizeable smuggling operation. There are the Vagabonds, who are described as the mortal enemies of the aforementioned Ise of Dogs Syndicate, and are on a quest for revenge. There’s also the elusive and mysterious group known as Angel, rumoured to be descendants of a secret pre-war science ministry who have eyes all over the city. In total, Team FOLON says there are 20 factions

COMPANIONS

Like the series that it owes its existence to, Fallout London is also going to feature a number of different companion characters that players will be able to meet, recruit, and head out on quests with. In total, there are going to be seven companion characters, each of whom will bring their own story tidbits and ties to different factions.

DIALOGUE

Fallout: London may be a mod based on Fallout 4, but it’s looking to tweak the base gameplay experience in some notable ways. For instance, the base game’s dialogue system has been expanded for the mod, with Team FOLON promising an experience that places choice and consequence mechanics front and center, something that Fallout 4 was criticized for not doing. Additionally, the development team has also confirmed that the main protagonist in the mod isn’t voiced, which is another area where the base game drew criticism. Additionally, speaking of voice acting, though the protagonist is going to be a silent one, all major characters in Fallout: London will be fully voiced.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Several other finer details have also been revealed on Fallout London. For instance, settlements – a core component of the Fallout 4 base game – is going to be part of the experience here as well, with a total of seven new and unique settlements included in the mod. In addition to that, players can expect dynamic new animations, new craftable items, new weapons to use in combat, as many as 200 quests, and more. Oh, and for those of you wondering whether Fallout London is ever going to show up on consoles- Team FOLON says the mod is going to be available only on PC. Will that possibly change in the future? Never say never, I guess, but that’s not the plan right, at least.

REQUIREMENTS

To be able to access Fallout London, you’re going to need not just the Fallout 4 base game, but also all of its DLC (which means you could also just buy the Game of the Year Edition). Available via both Steam and GoG, the mod will also need you to disable cloud saves, and will replace the actual, official game entirely. If you want to get the game back, you’ll have to uninstall it and the mod, before reinstalling the former again.

The long-in-development fan-made mode has finally released after years of development and some unfortunate recent delays.

We’ve been hearing about Fallout London for years now, but the long overdue fan-made expansion-sized mod has finally released. Check out its launch trailer below, which offers a glimpse at its story set in a post-apocalyptic London.

Being fan-made, Fallout London is obviously not an official part of the larger Fallout canon, but it does bring new quests, a new location, an extended dialogue system, new companions to meet and recruit, and plenty else for players to dive into.

Fallout London was originally due out this April, but it got delayed at the eleventh hour when Bethesda announced that it was released the long-awaited Next-Gen Update for Fallout 4, which would break compatibility with mods. Following that, GOG has also been aiding in Fallout London’s testing.

To install and play Fallout London, you will need to own the Fallout 4 GotY edition. If you’re playing on Steam, you’ll also need to ensure that the game’s version number is set to before the aforementioned Next-Gen Update was released.
