Shadows of the Colossus is easily one of those titles that set a benchmark for future games to come. I was thrilled to no end when the HD collection of two of the best games was announced last year.
Recently some screenshots of the HD collection were revealed so we decided to compare it with the original PlayStation 2 version and the results as one might put it are stunning.

Team Ico boss Fumito Ueda has announced that The Last Guardian has been delayed.

If that wasn’t bad enough the much anticipated HD re-release of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus has also been knocked back.

The developer did, at least, post an apology on the EU PlayStation blog, saying that the delay will mean a better quality product. Good on him.

“I announced at last year’s Tokyo Game Show that the release timing of The Last Guardian which is currently being developed would be holiday 2011.

However, to provide more challenging and better quality of content to users and to fulfill First Party Studio’s obligations, I decided to postpone its release timing.

All the members of my production team are working together at a fast pace to develop and release the game in First Party Studio quality.

I sincerely apologize to all the customers who have been waiting for “The Last Guardian” for so long, but I beg for your patience. I will also announce the new release timing at a later time.”

Well, if it makes for a better game; but I’m still a little gutted.

Thanks to CVG for the info.

Shadow of the Colossus was one of the best games for the PlayStation 2. I don’t know why, but it was underrated by many publications back then. For me Shadow of the Colossus was one of those games that redefined the PlayStation 2 experience in 2005. Fast forward six years , 2011, The Last Guardian is set to do the same.
So how do the two games stack up with each other? Please do note that this comparison is not aimed at a graphical level, but is for comparing the visual style and art direction.
Let us know what are your thoughts in the comments below.

Fumito Ueda, Lead Designer of Team Ico, creators of masterpieces such as Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, and the upcoming The Last Guardian, has said that both his games in 3D look ‘overwhelming.’

Just HD in the upcoming re-release of both his aforementioned games “brings a lot of life” to them, according to him. In an interview with the EU PlayStation Blog, he said that the 3D visuals add “even more ‘juice'” to the games.

“I’d first like to clarify that 3D is not essential to enjoy these experience – the HD element in itself brings a lot of life to the games. However, 3D will bring even more,” he said. “Both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus were designed with a huge depth of field in mind, demonstrated through the vast landscapes. Although 3D technology wasn’t at the point that it is now, it was certainly something we considered. Now that the technology allows it, it gives the product even more ‘juice’ so to speak.”

“I’ve already experienced this throughout the trial build and was overwhelmed with the results. That’s how much the 3D element brings to the title,” he concluded.

Wow. I’m sold. These games were already very good, not they just look even better.

Walmart rocks. Those guys just ousted MAG 2 on their website. And now, they have also listed a Team Ico Collection for the PS3, which include the very successful PS2 titles, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. It was inevitable, but still, it comes as a surprise. And guess what? Walmart is even taking pre-orders for it. Strange, it’s not even officially announced yet. The best thing? It’s just $40.

The game will be released on 4/1/2011 according to the listing. I just hope the guys at Walmart don’t know how to joke. This better be real.

Maybe Sony might officially announce this game at TGS this year. They have already said they are “very, very aware” of the demand for a collection. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
