These PS4 titles look good but they can look even better on PS5.

Backwards compatibility for PS4 titles on the PS5 has been an interesting journey thus far. The PS5’s Boost Mode offers performance gains and/or other improvements for existing PS4 titles. On the other hand, some titles will receive dedicated updates that leverage the console’s power in much better ways but there are still plenty of games that are missing out. Let’s take a look at 15 such titles that desperately need these patches.

Bloodborne

It’s been almost six years since the game originally launched but the demand for an official 60 FPS mode in Bloodborne remains strong. 4K resolution support would also be great but it’s the higher frame rate, that too running consistently to combat the frame-pacing issues, that remains unfulfilled. Make it happen Sony. Whether it’s in the rumored PC version or on PS5, just…make it happen already.

Five years later, the PS4 has accumulated an impressive range of titles. Here are the top 30 to play.

Ever since it launched in 2013, the PlayStation 4 has been on a roll. It’s not only shipped over 86 million units but also houses some of the best exclusives out there with some of the best visuals. If you’re keen on hopping aborad the PS4 train, then take a look at 30 of its all-time best titles, from pretty good to outright great.

DriveClub

Evolution Studios’ DriveClub had a pretty rough start with server issues and glitches making a lot of the content inaccessible. Nevertheless, the developer stuck with it, improving the experience, adding more content and branching out into different ideas (like bikes). By now, DriveClub stands as one of the better racing experiences out there, even if it isn’t as hyper-realistic as, say, Gran Turismo Sport.

Tearaway Unfolded is like adventuring through a pop up storybook. Is this a story you should be invested in?

Media Molecule, best known for their innovatively unique LittleBigPlanet games is up to their old tricks again, with the second outing of their Tearaway series, which premiered on the Vita in 2013. Perhaps one of the first non-Nintendo based games to feature worlds entirely made up of various kinds of paper craft, Tearaway Unfolded represents a whimsical, if familiar journey on the PS4.

The game itself is something of an expanded remake of the original, with the most notable changes being the substitution of the PS4’s touchpad for the Vita’s touchscreen in certain sections.

The innovative control scheme is a bit like a piece of well-folded origami, a uniquely crafted thing of beauty. The shoulder buttons allow you to shine a bright spotlight on the screen, which affects the world in many different ways, such as renewing the paper foliage of density and color, opening up new pathways or mesmerizing enemies into walking themselves off cliffs and high ledges.

You’re also imbued early on in the game with the power of the wind, and a simple swipe on the touchpad will send whooshing gusts blowing through the landscape, the direction you swipe determines whether your windy day blows in from the north, south, east or west. This is used to unfold paper bridges, blow enemies off screen and remove obstacles.

"Once you get familiar with the abilities and inner workings of gameplay, however, that’s when the puzzles and platforming really come together, like a paper dragon suddenly finding its lost tail. "

It’s easy to see that Tearaway: Unfolded shines brightest when it’s using the interesting abilities and mechanics of the PS4 controller to effectively influence gameplay options. Like the Vita version, you can still use your voice to give life to characters in the world or “sketch” your own creations that come to life in the world but these seem secondary to the more interesting gameplay mechanisms.

Once you get familiar with the abilities and inner workings of gameplay, however, that’s when the puzzles and platforming really come together, like a paper dragon suddenly finding its lost tail. You’ll often find yourself mapping out your movements and chaining together abilities, such as blowing confused enemies off restored bridges or successfully navigating maze like structures, and with the flick of your wrist, hurling enemies into gates to smash them open or slicing down paper hedges.

Drawing with the touchpad, however, isn’t nearly as intuitive, and the results of your creations are often kin to a Microsoft Paint program. There’s also a companion app which turns your cell phone or tablet into a virtual sketch pad as well, and if you want to add a more personal touch to the game, you can use the PlayStation camera or your phone camera to take a picture and “import’ it into the game for use as stickers or as a texture for surfaces.

The companion app has several other functions if you’re so inclined. A second player can join in on all the paper fun by creating little cutout shapes and adding them to the game world as you play, blown in by a stray gust of wind. This isn’t a huge addition, but it’s kind of neat to get younger players who may have siblings sitting on the sidelines involved as well.

"Despite it’s wondrous visuals and unique mechanics, there are a few paper cuts along the way. The platforming elements aren’t quite as sharp as they could be, resulting in some deaths here and there. "

Visually, everything is as crisp as a brand new sheet of paper. The world you traverse is rich and vibrant and it feels like you’re journeying through your own pop up storybook. Colors are bright and textures are well done. Rolling paper waves and fluffy paper clouds are marvels and everything is gorgeous and consistent.

Consistency is probably one of the finer aspects of Tearaway: Unfolded. Every new gameplay mechanic, enemy, or location finds and builds on new ways to use paper, glue and stickers to surprise you and hold your interest, even after you’ve put the controller down.

The story is simple but filled with Media Molecule’s demonstrated ability to add whimsy and charm to even the most mundane of things. As a result, as the envelope shaped Iota or Atoi, your journey leaves quite a paper trail, literally. You’ll run into boxy squirrels, and sharp edged crowds and many colorful denizens of the world who seem cut from the same piece of paper you are.

"Consistency is probably one of the finer aspects of Tearaway: Unfolded. Every new gameplay mechanic, enemy, or location finds and builds on new ways to use paper, glue and stickers to surprise you and hold your interest, even after you’ve put the controller down."

The narrative is delivered with style and wit, thanks largely to the dulcet tones of Stephen Fry, whose devil’s pact with all things Media Molecule has yet to run its course.

Despite it’s wondrous visuals and unique mechanics, there are a few paper cuts along the way. The platforming elements aren’t quite as sharp as they could be, resulting in some deaths here and there. Combat is also repetitive at best. Also for a game in which there are hidden collectibles, like gift boxes littered about each level for you to find, there is surprisingly, no post game additions to make going back and tracking down all these confetti laden containers easier. Some kind of paper-oriented assist would have gone a long way. A treasure map, perhaps?

With each new location literally unfolding right before your eyes, and the expanded areas and locales brimming with gusts of wind just begging to shake paper sails, Tearaway Unfolded gives new meaning to the term “paper trail”. It may not be a flawless journey, but it’ll be an unforgettable one.

September is chockfull of great games.

August is nearly at an end and presented a decent roster of high-profile games to choose from. However, September is where the real AAA season begins and it’s full of high-profile remasters, long-awaited sequels, innovative titles, big name expansions and even a football game or two. What are some of the top upcoming games to look forward to in September 2015? We take a closer look at eight of them. As always, let us know what your highly anticipated games are in the comments below.

Destiny: The Taken King

Enough has been said both for and against Bungie’s online shooter Destiny. It’s credit enough that it’s able to stay in the news so often but whether you feel slighted by many Year One Exotics being left behind or the whole deal behind Year One rewards, The Taken King will be Destiny’s most substantial expansion till date. A new zone, loads of new gear and weapons, a new leveling system and much more are on the way but will it be enough to sway an additional $40 away from consumers’ wallets?

Mad Max

Avalanche Software is best known for the chaos and over-the-top violence of its Just Cause series. With Mad Max, it takes a decidedly different approach, mixing open world exploration with realistic brawling and visceral car combat. The game itself is very true to the aesthetic of the Mad Max universe and the appearance of various areas we love like Thunderdome, Gas Town, etc. along with the developer’s pedigree make it worth watching out for. Mad Max is out on September 1st for Xbox One, PC and PS4.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

This is the big one. With nearly perfect critical acclaim from all fronts, an immense budget and as the conclusion to the saga started with Ground Zeroes and the over-arching Metal Gear timeline, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is nearly upon us. Whether you’re looking to get into the series for the first time, eager to explore and dissect the story bit by bit or just in the mood to experience what could be the Game of the Year, The Phantom Pain simply can’t be missed. Unless, of course, you want to play Mad Max first since they release on the same day.

Forza Motorsport 6

Though Forza Motorsport has always been about celebrating the wondrous engineering of automobiles, Forza Motorsport 5 seemed to lack a tremendous selection of cars. Forza Motorsport 6 fixes this by offering more than 450 cars, a myriad of tracks to choose from and even better visuals than before. Drivatar returns to taunt players once again and the new Stories of Motorsport mode looks to offer the meatiest single-player mode in the series. Couple that with up to 24 racers on a track at once, wet weather driving and commentary from former Top Gear hosts James May and Richard Hammond and Forza Motorsport 6 is pretty much the racer to look forward to.

FIFA 16

I’m not a football guy. At all. However, EA’s FIFA series is a big deal and FIFA 16 appears to be its biggest step forward yet. Along with the usual enhancements and changes, such as Training being moved to Career mode and skill games to further tailor your players, FIFA 16 will be the first game in the series to include female teams. Twelve women’s national teams have been included along with detailed motion capture for the female footballers. If it’s all about the atmosphere, then you’ll have 78 stadiums to choose from with crowds acting more vibrant than ever. FIFA 16 is out on September 22nd in North America and September 24th in Europe.

Super Mario Maker

Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker is going beyond simply giving fans the next big Mario platformer – it’s now allowing them to create their own. Using the art styles and assets from Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros U, you can create your own Mario level replete with classic items and obstacles. Players can also manipulate elements accordingly, adding more enemies, mixing up level lay-outs entirely and then sharing these levels online. For those more interested in playing than creating, there’s the online Course World which provides access to various user-created levels along with challenges. Super Mario Maker is out on September 11th in North America and Europe.

Tearaway Unfolded

Yes, this is another port/remaster for the PlayStation 4 but guess what? The original Tearaway is one of the best PS Vita titles and Media Molecule will be effectively retelling its story on the PS4 with Tearaway Unfolded. The various features have been redesigned and enhanced for the DualShock 4 controller and an extended storyline has also been promised. If that weren’t enough, the game will be in 1080p resolution and running at 60 frames per second. Tearaway Unfolded is out on September 8th.

SOMA

What exactly has Frictional Games, developer of the amazing Amnesia: The Dark Descent, been up to anyway? As it turns out, its newest game SOMA has been in development since 2010. Not many details have been revealed aside from the first person survival horror trapping, sci-fi elements and eerie, otherworldly creatures that have only been teased thus far. But given the brilliance the studio delivered with Amnesia, it seems a given that SOMA will be something truly special. Look forward to it on September 22nd for PS4, PC, Mac OS X and Linux.

Sony has finally confirmed the timings for its E3 2015 press conference. Taking place in the L.A. Memorial Sports Arena in Los Angeles, the conference is set to happen at 6 PM PST on June 15th. It will be happening several hours after Ubisoft’s press conference on the same day.

Thus far, Sony hasn’t announced which games we can expect at the show, though comments made by UK manager Fergal Gara indicate that Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky and Media Molecule’s Tearaway Unfolded will be making appearances. We also expect more footage to be shown from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, some announcement to be made regarding Guerrilla Games’ Horizon, and most importantly of all, news on PS4 exclusives in development at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream.

What are your thoughts on Sony’s upcoming E3 press conference? Which games do you hope to see? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Sony UK's Fergal Gara talks about what's to come for consumers this year.

Sony’s Holiday 2015 line-up for the PlayStation 4 is looking a bit worrying, especially with recent news that the Ratchet & Clank remake was delayed to 2016. Nonetheless, UK managing director Fergal Gara told MCV that there’s plenty to look forward to on the console, staring with Tearaway Unfolded and No Man’s Sky.

“I won’t go into any detail now. There is plenty for gamers to get excited about already, such as Tearaway for PS4 and No Man’s Sky. That’s just the start of what is on the table right now. So I don’t have any concerns that we will have a lack of strong software for PS4 this peak.”

It seems that most developers are still trying to get used to the PS4’s hardware. “My sense is that the new platforms have opened up the ambitions of developers and the capabilities of what they can achieve. What has then happened since has been a bit of rushing to market and a couple of not perfect launches. That’s perhaps driven some conservatism to not overly force this and make sure we get it right–there’s been an adjustment of pace.” That could explain the absence of studios like Media Molecule, SCE Bend Studio and Quantic Dream when it comes to PS4-exclusive titles.

“The good news is that the ability to stick to timelines will improve as people get experience of the hardware under their belts. I have been hearing stories from around the industry that give me assurance that developers have got a better grasp on things, so we will be in increasingly good shape.”

It’s not like Sony has to worry about the success of PS4 hardware. The console has sold more than 22 million units worldwide as of April 2015. One can also expect plenty of new game announcements at E3 2015 so stay tuned for Sony’s conference on June 15th.

Everything you need to know about Tearaway Unfolded

Tearaway Unfolded is an upcoming port and re-release of the popular adventure platformer Tearaway, which originally released on the PS Vita. This build is an upgraded version of the 2013 portable version.

The PS4 build of the game is being developed by Tarsier Studios and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The primary goal is to bring the game up to a full 1080p resolution and the developer is currently targeting a constant frame rate of 60 frames per second. Tearaway Unfolded currently has a 2015 release window.

The reveal of Tearaway Unfolded came during Gamescom of 2014 when Sony took to the stage to announce that they would be bringing the game to the PS4 with Media Molecule assisting Tarsier Studios to make sure the essential elements of the game were in place.

The PS4 build of Tearaway will take advantage of and make use of some of the features exclusive to the PlayStation 4. This includes the Dualshock 4’s Lightbar and possibly the touch button interface given the touch screen tech that was used in Tearaway on Vita. The game will also make use of the PS4’s Share functionality as well, at the minute more details haven’t been revealed.

Tearaway is one of the few games that makes use of an art style that blends both the 3D and 2D worlds into one. That being said, the game itself isn’t played in a 2D world, gameplay takes place in a 3D space that the serves as the game world.

The major implementation of the 2D components in the world is the texturing of items. Most 3D objects in Tearaway are designed to look as though they are constructed out of sheets of paper, lending the game it’s very distinct paper-craft style.

Sony have spoken about the visual styling of Tearaway. When the game first came onto the scene they said that the game would be an “Adventure through a vibrant papery world with your new friend iota, a plucky messenger with a unique message to deliver—to you!”

Story

The plot of Tearaway follows Iota or Atoi, a male or female messenger that’s off on a mission to deliver a special message that is unique to the player. Along their journey they will encounter small scraps of paper enemies that will try and stop the delivery.

The main goal of the game is to make players enjoy the experience of the having played it, making them value the gameplay rather than having them focus on a plot heavy narrative.

Gameplay

As mentioned in the story portion of this wiki, the game was designed around having the player adventure through a lovingly designed paper-craft world. The adventure would be focused on the characters Iota and Atoi, a male and female paper-craft being respectively.

Tearaway Unfolded is a third person adventure game. In the original demonstration footage of the game that was revealed for the original PS Vita build of the game, the player was shown how to use texture implementation as part of the game. The demo involved an Elk character that need a new skin, which the player would provide by way of the PS Vita’s camera. Given that the PS4 is a distinctly separate piece of equipment from the PS4, it’s not yet known how this function and piece of gameplay will be implemented into the PS4 version of the game. It’s entirely possible that the player will be given an in-game camera to use in the game world. Once the play has managed to find a suitable substitute for the Elk’s coat, the chose texture is then applied to the Elk, acting as its new skin.At this time, information that gives gameplay specific information is limited

When the PS Vita original version the game was designed, it was created to effectively implement all of the PS Vita’s features, this was of course to make sure that they were meaningfully used opposed to having them feel like a gimmick.

A number of the original gameplay features made use of the cameras and internal gyroscopes to let the player look around inside the game world. Features like this are expected to still be in the PlayStation 4 build of the game, but with a new control scheme. It’s possible that moving the Dualshock 4 may allow for some similar functionality, or perhaps there’s going to be integration with the PlayStation 4 Camera. At the minute, this is largely supposition.

A video trailer for the PS4 build that was released showed that the player will use the touch pad in a number of ways with different gestures reflecting different mechanics in the game world. It also showed that at some point the player will even have to shake their controller to proceed further into the game.

In the original PS Vita build, the player would use the rear touch screen to press their fingers into the game world and interact with it. Features like this were a main selling point of the game, but the Dualshock 4 is missing these pieces of tech, so this feature may be entirely replaced or removed.

Another separate demo for the PS Vita version of the game shows off the player’s ability to cut out paper shapes for the characters featured in the game by using their fingers on the Vita’s front touch screen, this will likely be mimicked on the Dualshock 4 touch pad.

When Tearaway shipped on the PS Vita, it was very well received by the public at large and by the media. With the PS4 build on the horizon, a number of outlets have started to express worrying opinions that this heralds the death of the Vita with Vita exclusive game’s being ported to the PS4.

Characters

As mentioned above, the game has two main characters. One of whom is Atoi, the other is Iota. Both of these little characters are papercraft-like beings that are on a mission to deliver a special message.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.

Media Molecule previously announced that Tearaway would be coming to the PlayStation 4 after initially releasing on the PlayStation Vita. Along with upgraded visuals, Tearaway: Unfolded will translate its mechanics to the PlayStation 4 in various ways. A new gameplay trailer reveals exactly how that will work and you can check it out above.

You’ll be using the touch-pad for the drum trampolines at different points in order to propel your character upwards (whereas as the Vita version had you tapping on the rear touchpad) and shaking your control and all other manner of contortions in order to get through the game. Thankfully, the game looks incredible on the PlayStation 4 and we can’t wait to play it.

Tearaway: Unfolded will be available in 2015 for the PS4. Will you be picking it up on the PlayStation 4 even after it released on the Vita as far back as 2013? Let us know in the comments below.

Sony is looking to end the year with a bang with its upcoming mega event, the PlayStation Experience. The event promises to hold several developer panels, key notes, playable demos of upcoming AAA titles along with some big announcements. The event will be attended by some of the biggest first party and third party publishers/developers from the games industry including Activision, Naughty Dog and Ubisoft.

So what are some of the big reveals that might happen during the two day event? Below is a list of games which we think might make an appearance during the event.

A Possible Teaser Trailer For Guerrilla Games’ Open World RPG

Guerrilla Games are one of the developers on the list that is confirmed to be attending the PlayStation Experience. The team is working on an open world sci-fi role playing game under the code name Horizon. Interestingly, last week Guerrilla Games were looking for a Media Intern for producing trailers. Could this be a hint that the Killzone developer will be revealing its AAA open world RPG next week with a teaser video? With only a week to go for the PlayStation Experience, this cannot be a mere coincidence. However we will wait and see how this pans out.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – More Information And Possible New Trailer

Naughty Dog will be in full attendance at the PlayStation Experience. They even have a developer panel confirmed where they will be talking about how they built the E3 2014 teaser trailer. Given that the game is expected to release next year, Team PlayStation might very well use this opportunity to drop in a real time trailer and make us drool all over again. If not, we can certainly expect a lot of technical details to be revealed along with talks on the challenges that Naughty Dog faced during the development process of Uncharted 4.

Sucker Punch’s New Title

inFamous Second Son and Last Light were fantastic titles that showcased PlayStation 4’s technical prowess. But what is Sucker Punch currently working on is anyone’s guess. There have been hints in the past that they might be working on a new game which has compelling and believable characters. But that is merely an assumption on our part. There is a chance that they might announce a new Sly game given that it was a critical and commercial success on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

Square Enix Possibly Reveals Its New Console RPG

So, this one is not a surprise as Square Enix have already made it clear that they will be announcing a new role playing game in December. However we are not sure whether the announcement will take place via a press release, at the PlayStation Experience or The Game Awards. There is also a possibility that it might be announced at Jump Festa which takes place later next month. It must be noted that Square Enix is listed as one of the companies that will be attending the PlayStation Experience so there is a good chance that the announcement will happen there.

Media Molecule’s PS4 Project

Media Molecule announced during Gamescom 2013 that they are working on a PlayStation 4 game. Back then they showcased an intriguing tech demo but since then we hardly have any information on how that new game is shaping up. It also must be noted that MM are working on Tearaway Unfolded for PS4, a heavily modified version of the original Tearaway that launched on the PlayStation Vita. Expect a lot of Tearaway Unfolded info to drop during the PlayStation Experience and just may be a teaser trailer for their other PlayStation 4 project.
