Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is one of the best beat ’em ups to have released in recent years, and soon enough, there will be more of it for players to dive into. Earlier this year, Tribute Games and Dotemu announced Dimension Shellshock, an expansion for the title, and now, a specific release date has been announced.

Dimension Shellshock will launch later this month, on August 31, and new details have also been revealed on what it’ll bring. Two new playable characters will be added with Karai and Miyamoto Usagi, star of the Usagi Yojimbo comic book series, the former of whom hadn’t previously been revealed for the DLC. Additionally, Dimension Shellshock will also add a new Survival Mode that will task players with jumping from dimension to dimension in search of collectible crystals. Check out the trailer below for a glimpse of what the expansion will have in store.

The Survival Mode mode in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge DLC will feature weird dimensions, and its own progression system.

Publisher Dotemu and developer Tribute Games have revealed details about the new Survival Mode coming to side-scrolling beat ’em up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge in its upcoming Dimension Shellshock DLC. The game mode can be checked out in the video detailing the game mode below.

The new game mode will have players run through different dimensions, fighting hordes of enemies as they level up and get stronger along the way. The game mode also features a new progression system that will have players grow their ninja power bars, and extra hit points, among other things.

Survival Mode will bring with it new crystals that players can collect to jump from dimension to dimension. Each one of these dimensions will feature its own unique look and feel. The trailer shows off dimensions inspired by various concepts, like the Japan-inspired Edo dimension, an 8-bit dimension, and a dimension based on Omnichannel 6.

The Dimension Shellshock DLC for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge was announced back in June. The DLC will also bring with it new playable characters, including ronin rabbit Usagi Yojimbo.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, A Plague Tale: Requiem, and Evil West also contributed to its highest revenue yet.

Focus Entertainment revealed its Q4 2022/23 and full-year revenues recently. While the former reached €52.6 million, the latter is more interesting, hitting €194.1 million, the publisher’s highest in history. It presented a 36.2 percent total growth compared to the fiscal year 2021/22.

Several titles helped in this regard – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Evil West (which it co-owns with Flying Wild Hog) and Atomic Heart. Mundfish’s long-awaited first-person action RPG also performed “above the group’s initial expectations,” though it didn’t reveal sales numbers.

The developer confirmed in March that it had over five million players in less than a month of release. However, since Atomic Heart is also on Game Pass, measuring the number of sales is tough. Regardless, it’s good news for the title, which has been in development for years and faced numerous delays and controversies.

There’s still more to come as Mundfish will release DLC packs with new territories, enemies and stories. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

Netflix subscribers can now play Dotemu and Tribute Games' beat 'em up on mobile devices.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games used to be some of the best beat ’em up titles around back in their day, and last year, the series made its long-awaited comeback to the space with the widely acclaimed TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge. Having been able for PC and consoles for several months now, the game has also made its way over to mobile platforms.

That’s right, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge has launched for iOS and Android – though there is a catch. Though the game can be found on the App Store and Play Store respectively, it is only accessible to those who have an active Netflix subscription. The game can also be accessed directly through the Netflix app.

In our review of the game, we awarded it a score of 9/10, saying, “TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is simultaneously an excellent throwback to the classic Turtles beat ’em ups and a solid new modern brawler in its own right.” Read the full review through here.

Last month, the game added a custom Arcade Mode with a free update, though there’s been no official word yet on whether full-fledged DLC is also in the works. Back in June, developer Tribute Games said that it would consider working on DLC based on the game’s reception and feedback from fans.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is also available on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The new Custom Arcade mode in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge allows players to deeply customise their Arcade Mode experience.

Publisher DotEmu and developer Tribute Games have released a new update for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, bringing a variety of new features to the game. The main highlight of the update, however, is the addition of the new Custom Arade mode. Check out the patch notes below.

Custom Arcade mode harkens back to days of playing beat ’em ups on arcade machines by introduing customisation to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge through the use of dip switches. Essentially, the mode allows players to deeply personalise 11 aspects of the game. For example, the ability for taunts to generate Ninja Power can be disabled.

Other aspects of the game are largely focused on bug fixes and the addition of new video filters to the game, including CRT and VCR filters for fans of retro aesthetics in their games. Bug fixes range from minor quality of life improvements to bugs that might be game-breaking, including Arcade mode crashing when changing difficulty, or the damage dealt by cars ignoring armor.

NEW FEATURES

Gameplay

A new Arcade mode is here: Custom Game! Just like an actual arcade machine: customize your game experience using DIP switches: free play, old-school Super Attacks, faster enemies, no more taunts, and many more! You can see the customization in the lobbies of Custom Games. Achievements’ progression and unlocking is disabled in Custom Games.

Online

In the Character Select menu, the host can now set a maximum number of players for the lobby.

Graphics

Added come awesome filters: CRT (normal or curved) and VCR! Check them out in the Options menu.

FIXES

Gameplay

Fixed rare crash in Arcade mode when changing difficulty.

Cars can no longer deal massive damage when the player is considered Armored (for example: charging a Heavy Swing).

Fixed bosses sometimes unable to reach a player positioned at the very top or bottom of the stage.

Fixed bosses sometimes frozen after being hit by Raphael’s Super Flying Attack.

Fixed Score not kept for player when switching character after a continue.

Fixed April’s Super Flying Attack sometimes seemingly reviving KO’ed enemies.

Fixed reviving a KO player near the transition point (for example: escalators in the Crystal Palace Mall) that would sometimes prevent progression.

Fixed updating the timer for special statuses (for example: Infinite Ninja Power) when KO or in a cutscene.

Online

Guest players can now rejoin the same hosted game.

Input

Fixed input not correctly assessed when selecting between Backflip or Roundoff when turning around.

Menus

Fixed rare soft lock occurring in the World Map if the user completed Stage 8 after finishing Stage 10.

IMPROVEMENTS

Gameplay

Taunt now only fills up the first Ninja Power bar.

We no longer clear fully accumulated Ninja Power bars when KO on Chill difficulty.

Doing a throw now grants the player invulnerability.

Added more feedback in the HUD when trying to do a Super Attack without enough Ninja Power.

Many small animation tweaks were made to all bosses, often to make attacks easier to read.

Fixed Dirtbag’s dig holes collision detection that was too wide and deep.

Reduced the number of enemies spawned in Zorax’s stampede and the frequency of stampedes. Zorax also has a bit less health when facing multiple players.

Rat King now does Pied Piper less frequently.

Improved the Super Shredder fight in many small ways for a smoother pacing and tweaked some damage values. His grab is now used more frequently and is more efficient, though. Bummer dude!

Improved Statue of Tyranny pacing and tweaked some damage values.

Mother Mouser has a new bite animation to differentiate the charge bite from the idle bite, to give players time to react.

Mouser Model 3 and Mother Mouser are now acting a bit faster.

Radical Mode damage multiplier is now applied to all throws, Super Dive Attack, and charged Heavy Swing.

Fixed players sometimes falling outside of the screen repeatedly when respawning, at specific locations.

Online

Added a Refresh button to the lobby search list.

We improved the way the Arcade score is calculated: we now record each player individually, even if they leave the game.

Localization

Corrected or improved a few strings in Spanish, French and German.

Menus

However, developer Tribute Games says the PS5 version will be identical to the PS4 version, while free upgrades won't be offered either.

Beat ’em up fans were treated to a proper blast from the past earlier this year when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge launched for PC, Switch, and last-gen consoles, delivering an excellent brawler that not only tickled the nostalgia bone, but was also an impressive game in its own right. While it is playable on current-gen consoles, that is currently only possible via backward compatibility- though that will be changing soon.

Well, for the PlayStation side of things, at least. Developer Tribute Games has announced that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is getting a native launch for the PS5 on November 15. How is it different from the game’s PS4 version? Not at all, as it turns out. “This version is identical to the PS4’s and doesn’t include any additional feature or content,” Tribute Games says, so this is clearly a release meant for PS5 owners who haven’t yet purchased the game.

The developer also confirms that a free PS4-to-PS5 upgrade won’t be offered.

In our review of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, we awarded it a score of 9/10, saying, “TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is simultaneously an excellent throwback to the classic Turtles beat ’em ups and a solid new modern brawler in its own right.” Read the full review through here.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is currently available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Shortly after its launch, publisher Dotemu announced that the game had sold over a million units in its first week.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 was released for the Nintendo Switch on July 29th and has garnered a strong amount of critical acclaim. Its sales have been pretty good as well with Gfk (via GamesIndustry) confirming it to be the biggest UK launch for the series to date. The Gfk physical sales for the week ending July 30th are now available and unsurprisingly, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is on top.

The previous chart-topper, Horizon Forbidden West, dropped to second place. Guerrilla Games’ open-world title has topped the charts several times in the past few months, thanks to the new PS5 bundle. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga holds steady at third while Nintendo Switch Sports drops to fourth from second place. F1 22 also dropped from fifth to sixth place.

The other new debuts for the week were Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge in eighth (with Merge Games publishing the physical version) and Bandai Namco’s Digimon Survive in 10th. Check out the full top ten for the week below.

The 2D arcade-style beat 'em up title launched on June 16th for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch along with Game Pass.

Tribute Games’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge received plenty of critical praise at launch but that’s not all. It confirmed over one million copies were sold in the first week. The arcade-style beat ’em up is currently available for Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC along with Xbox Game Pass.

Cyrille Imbert, CEO of publisher Dotemu, stated in a press release, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is the game I dreamed of working on ever since I began watching the original cartoon and funneling coins into the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade cabinets as a kid. We are immensely grateful to Nickelodeon for the opportunity to honor an era of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that profoundly impacted the lives of everyone at Dotemu, and to our friends at Tribute Games for expertly capturing the classic thrill of the Turtles’ battles with the Foot Clan in a new experience that feels completely fresh and exciting to play.”

Tribute Games co-founder Jean-Francois Major also said, “Tribute Games set out to make the ultimate celebration of a chapter in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles history that means the world to us, and it’s been wonderful to watch the accessible fun of beat-em-ups resonate with longtime fans and genre newcomers alike. We’re thankful for all of the support and encouragement the passionate Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles community has shown us since the reveal of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and we look forward to watching players continue to discover the easter eggs we’ve hidden throughout the game while chaining together some bodacious combos.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge sees Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael teaming up once again to fight off against Shredder (with some help from Master Splinter, April O’Neil and Casey Jones). Along with the Foot Clan, they’ll face classic foes like Rocksteady, Bebop, the Rat King, and more.

There’s Story Mode, which offers different challenges and collectibles, and upgrades for more health. Or you could opt for the old-school Arcade experience with limited lives and no checkpoints. Four-player local co-op is available along with six-player online play. For more details, check out our official review here.

As for the future, while there were no plans for DLC around release time, that may change based on the reception and feedback from the community. Stay tuned for more details in the future.

Back in the limelight.

Back in the late 80s and early 90s when beat ’em ups were wildly popular, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games were some of the best representatives of the genre, capitalizing on the success of its source material and the genre to deliver multiple experiences that consistently captured lightning in a bottle. Decades later, beat ’em ups have made an unlikely comeback and seem to be thriving again, so it makes sense that the Turtles are coming back into the limelight as well. Developer Tribute Games’ TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is a wonderful follow-up to the arcade Turtles beat ’em ups and the SNES’ Turtles in Time, and much like Streets of Rage 4 before it, it toes the line between paying tribute to a bygone era and deliver a solid new modernized take on it with great aplomb.

One thing that’s abundantly clear from the very first moment you boot up the game is Tribute Games’ love for the source material and for the aforementioned classic TMNT games. In more ways than one, Shredder’s Revenge is a wonderful love letter to those spiritual predecessors and to the legendary cartoon itself. From beloved characters being perfectly portrayed to deep cut easter eggs, from the original voice actors from the cartoon reprising their roles to the excellent soundtrack and the way it perfectly captures that 90s vibe, from the wonderfully animated cutscenes sprinkled throughout the game and how they’re just brimming with nostalgia to so much more, Shredder’s Revenge is a game that takes every chance it gets to show its love for the beat ’em ups that have inspired it, and, of course, for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles itself.

"Developer Tribute Games’ TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is a wonderful follow-up to the arcade Turtles beat ’em ups and the SNES’ Turtles in Time, and much like Streets of Rage 4 before it, it toes the line between paying tribute to a bygone era and deliver a solid new modernized take on it with great aplomb."

But this isn’t a game that’s just riding on the nostalgia wave. Rather than simply looking to score some quick and easy points on that front, Shredder’s Revenge wastes no time in proving to players that it’s also an accomplished beat ’em up in its own right, one that isn’t just content with aping those classic late 80s and early 90s games, but also makes several key improvements of its own to deliver a more polished, refined, and in turn, enjoyable experience.

Right off the bat, there are six playable characters- the Turtles themselves, Splinter, and April O’Neil, with Casey Jones coming in later on as an unlockable character. The general way to play is the same with each character, which means that that accessibility and easy-to-pick-up nature that is so important in beat ’em ups is retained here. At the same time, however, there are meaningful ways each character differs from all the others. They all have completely different animations and fight using their own unique weapons, of course, but they have notable mechanical differences as well, with each having variations in things such as their speed, the reach of their weapons and attacks, and how much damage they do, while they all also have their own unique special attacks. Playing as each is fun, and even though everyone will naturally gravitate towards their personal favourites, I can confidently say that they’re all great to play as.

It helps, of course, that the core combat in Shredder’s Revenge is great, striking the perfect balance between button mashy fun and mechanical depth. Regardless of whether you’re looking for something mindlessly enjoyable or something with a skill ceiling, the game delivers. Main attacks are dealt with a single button, with the primary focus being on repeatedly mashing it to deliver chained combos. In addition to that, however, you have various other moves- an uppercut to send foes flying upward, a downward kick for when you’re airborne, a charged attack to break enemies’ defences or deal harder-hitting strikes, a dodge that can be combined with attacks or used to quickly recover from getting hit.

"All of these attacks and moves come together wonderfully, because when you get into that rhythm of chaining different moves together and dishing out combos and long chains of attacks without getting hit, it’s always incredibly fun and satisfying."

The most crunching of them all is the super attack. Build up your super bar to the max by dishing out attacks, and once it’s been charged up, you can unleash a super attack that essentially instantly clears most enemies in your immediate vicinity. The super bar fills up pretty quickly too, so you’ll be using these attacks with some regularity. All of these attacks and moves come together wonderfully, because when you get into that rhythm of chaining different moves together and dishing out combos and long chains of attacks without getting hit, it’s always incredibly fun and satisfying. Enemy variety helps with that as well- the further you progress into the game, the more it introduces new enemy types with different attacks and movement patters, calling for different strategies in dealing with them. If there’s one area where I feel the combat fails, it’s when you have to deal with aerial foes- though thankfully the bulk of the focus in the game is on grounded combat.

Shredder’s Revenge’s levels also deserve special praise. There are sixteen levels in the game in total, with the bulk of them taking place throughout New York City, and while there are some annoying hoverboard levels that I thought were a little sloppy in execution, the overwhelming majority of them are a blast. From a TV station to sewers filled with rats, from a museum to a zoo, from the rooftops of New York to so much more, there’s a solid variety of levels throughout the 2-3 hours it takes to roll credits. And it’s not just visual variety- levels often have uniquely themed environmental traps and hazards as well, which can be both a boon and a bane to you depending on how you play, from charging rhinos in the museum to monkeys throwing bananas at you from their cages in the zoo to wide open manholes on the streets of the city. The cherry on top of the sundae, meanwhile, is the interactivity of the levels. In classic beat ’em up fashion, there are things to smash and break and secrets to discover, and it really encourages you to pay attention to each new environment you find yourself in.

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge also offers you two choices in how you choose to tackle those levels. There’s the Arcade mode, which is a classic arcade beat ’em up experience- limited lives and continues, no checkpoints, and no saving, taking you through the game’s sixteen levels one after the other in quick succession. Then there’s the Story mode, which frames all the levels within a world map, allows you to replay levels, and adds on other bells and whistles on top. There’s merit to both modes, and Arcade is definitely more preferable for those who’re looking for a classic beat ’em up experience, but I personally enjoyed my time with the Story mode more. Here, there’s a simple progression system in place for each individual character, as well as optional objectives in each level, like specific challenges or collectibles to find. If you’re looking for a meatier experience, Story mode is the way to go- though I will say I was a little disappointed with how barebones and, in turn, unnecessary the world map felt.

"This is a lovingly crafted and very well put together game that is not only an excellent and nostalgic callback a bygone era, but also a great experience in its own right that modernizes very smartly in all the ways that it should."

Ultimately, however, Shredder’s Revenge is a solid game, to say the very least. Whether you’re new to TMNT or to brawlers or experienced with one or both, whether you’re looking to play it solo or with five other players, whether you want to run through Arcade mode or tackle Story mode, there’s plenty to love here. This is a lovingly crafted and very well put together game that is not only an excellent and nostalgic callback a bygone era, but also a great experience in its own right that modernizes very smartly in all the ways that it should.
