These titles may not have met with the most positive critical responses but have been appreciated by players throughout the years.

Like many things in this world, there will be differing opinions on games. One person may enjoy role-playing games while others find them boring, no matter how much praise a certain title has received. Another person may enjoy sports titles like Madden year in and year out without fail. While the very tenet of “differing opinions” is a basic and altogether human quality, it’s still interesting to look back on video games over the years to compare critical and fan reactions. Let’s take a look at 10 games with mixed critical responses that fans still embraced.

Days Gone

Perhaps the most recent example on this list is Days Gone. First revealed at E3 2016, its main calling card was the sizable hordes of undead on-screen that players could battle. It was originally slated to release in 2018 but faced a number of delays before finally launching in April 2019. On Metacritic, it averaged a 71 out of 109 reviews from critics. Some gameplay and world building aspects were praised but critics were ultimately harsh on the game for its mission design, writing, performance and myriad of bugs. While not an outright terrible review average, it was a shock to PS4 players, especially with how revered Sony’s exclusive first-party offerings had become.

After its launch, however, Days Gone attained a relatively strong following with players becoming attached to the characters and the overall world design. Bend Studio would also update the game frequently, adding new challenges, difficulty modes and bug fixes. It eventually became clear that Days Gone wouldn’t be getting a sequel or even a major expansion. Earlier this year, Jason Schreier spoke to sources that revealed a sequel proposal being rejected due to the first game’s mixed critical response and long development period. Nevertheless, a PC version arrived in May and fans have started a petition for a sequel. Bend Studio is currently working on a new IP built on “the deep open-world systems that they have developed with Days Gone” as per PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst so at the very least, its DNA carries over in some ways.

Stunning looking game brought to life by Havoc.

Tengami is a beautiful, beautiful iOS adventure game developed by Nyamyam; its beautiful paper-crafted pop-up world is inspired by Japanese arts and crafts, and requires thorough visual fidelity. The game becomes one of the pioneers of the Havok engine on mobile platforms.

“We’ve come to expect only reliable and robust features when working with Havok technology,” said Phil Tossell, Game Creator of Tengami. “Each of Havok’s technologies has proven to be incredibly valuable to our development team and we are excited to have created an immersive and visually stunning iOS game.”

Nyamyam made use of a range of Havok’s technology- Havok AI was used to control the pathfinding of the character, Havok Animation allowed the development team to bring seamless motion to the title’s distinct art style and, Havok Physics helped ensure that the entities exhibited the proper collision detection, reacting according to contact with the world and its inhabitants.

“When we learned the creatively ambitious scope of Tengami, we knew Havok technology was the perfect fit for Nyamyam to produce the quality mobile game they were envisioning,” said Brian Waddle, VP of Worldwide Sales and Marketing at Havok. “Our dedicated team worked closely with Nyamyam to make sure they were able to get the most out of Havok’s technology to bring their creative vision to life.”

Twitter poll successful.

Ex Rare veterans who current work at Nyamyam have confirmed that Tengami is headed to the Wii U as well, and won’t be an iPad exclusive game.

The reason for porting the game to the Wii U was overwhelming Twitter support in a poll.

“The fact that Tengami was conceived with touch in mind makes it perfect fit for the Wii U GamePad. We think there are some unique features the Wii U has that we can take advantage of to make the game even better,” Nyamyam’s Phil Tossell told Nintendo Life.

“I am very intrigued by the possibilities for new types of multiplayer games the Wii U could deliver. It is something I would like to think about in more depth after we have finished Tengami,” Jennifer Schneidereit said.
