Capcom makes the biggest splash on the list.

This year’s Tokyo Game Show came to a close after a new digital format, one that seemed to be pretty successful, and as usual it was filled with lots of titles from lots of publishers. We’re also close to a new generation of consoles launching, so there’s so much to pay attention to. After the show, Japanese players were polled as to what their most wanted games were after TGS ended and, while most were what you expect, a few surprises slipped in.

The polling was done via major Japanese gaming media Famitsu, Dengeki, 4Gamer, and V Jump. It was to determine what games that had released on September 24th or later the public was most excited for. While it’s no surprise that Capcom’s Monster Hunter Rise was at the top of the list, it is a bit of a shock that it was not number 1. That spot ended up going to Genshin Impact, the recently released free to play action title. Capcom, however, really was the MVP on the 15 game list having three other titles beside Rise on there: Resident Evil Village, Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition and Monster Hunter Stories 2.

The rest of the list was somewhat predictable, including Final Fantasy 16, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, NeiR Replicant and Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires. Cyberpunk 2077 also managed to just make the list at 13, the sole western title. Mobile had a pretty strong presence, too, as a few slots were taken by mobile-only titles such as Sakura Revolution and Project Sekai Colorful Stage! both from Sega.

Thanks to Siliconera for translating and compiling the list. You can see it, as well as the platforms for each title, in full below.

Genshin Impact (PC, PS4, iOS, Android; also coming later to Switch and PS5)

Monster Hunter Rise (Switch)

The views were up significantly from last year.

The COVID outbreak did a number on the world and many industries were impacted to varying degrees. The gaming world was no different as it was the cause of many delays as well as cancelation of major events such as E3. Some conventions decided to take a digital-only approach, as was the case with the Tokyo Game Show 2020, which just wrapped up. The move was one that also seemed to pay off, at least in the case of views.

As reported by Famitsu, when totaling up the amount of views from all major sources it broke over 31 million views (31.6 to be more precise). For comparison, last year’s show saw 16.5 million views. Of course, it’s hard to compare since last year’s show also had a live component while 2020’s didn’t, and this is the year of next generation console launches which will obviously drive extra traffic from those starved for any and all info.

Tokyo Game Show 2021 is also confirmed to be happening next year from September 30th to October 3rd. As it stands, we don’t know if the event will have to go digital only or not, though hopefully the COVID situation will be more under control by then.

When it comes to the Monster Hunter franchise, most are abuzz about the upcoming Monster Hunter Rise that will release for the Switch this upcoming March. But we can’t forget about World, the game that blew the door off the hinges for the franchise to make it Capcom’s biggest series almost overnight. Ever since its initial release, the game has gotten a steady stream of updates, which are now coming to an end.

The final title update will come at the end of this month and will include Arch-Tempered Velkhana, Clutch Claw Boost, the new Monster Fatalis, and more. You can read more details about it through here. The publisher released a trailer for the Title Update 5, which will be the final major title update for the game, which you can see below.

Monster Hunter World and its expansion, Iceborne, are available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Title Update 5 will release on all platforms at the end of the month on the 30th.

This party is once again being crazy with the surprise announcement this month of Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition. The re-release of the title will see us revisit the game that helped to revive the action franchise in a big way. Like previous Special Edition releases in the series, it will include new content, and at TGS 2020 we got a look at them.

Via Gamespot, we got to see the presentation of the show that began with Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition. Here the team showed off the game’s new ray-tracing, which will be exclusive to the PS5 version for a period of time, as well as Turbo mode, that sees the game going at 1.2x speed, and Legendary Dark Knight mode, a special difficulty mode that puts an absurd amount of enemies in your path.

And, of course, one of the biggest draws of the new release, we get a very small look at the playable version of Vergil. On top of all of that you will also get all the content from the Deluxe Edition release of the original title (with included alternate colors for each character) and the Bloody Palace post-launch DLC.

Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition will release at launch alongside the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. As of now, the game is not planned for a PC release.

Tekken 7 released in 2017 (for consoles, anyway, the original arcade version was released in 2015), and has seen been an ongoing project for Bandai Namco. It’s had constant updates to its roster, including some wild and unexpected guest stars. It’s become something special for the long running fighting series and now we know it has passed a new milestone alongside its latest addition to the ever growing roster.

We found out that the game had passed 5 million units as of December 2019. But at this year’s TGS 2020, the publisher revealed that in less than a year the game has shipped 1 million more copies, putting it at over 6 million shipped units, which in turn put the series as a whole at 50 million shipped units. They revealed this alongside the latest DLC character, the first of the upcoming season, Kunimitsu. This is a returning character from Tekken 2 with something of a twist as it’s the daughter of that character. You can see her reveal below.

Tekken 7 is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Capcom may have offered some new gameplay snippets in its recent TGS 2020 trailer for Monster Hunter Rise. But it also hosted a livestream where it showcased various elements of the Switch title, from the Wirebug to Palamutes. Check out the gameplay footage below from 1:34:00 and 2:28:00 onwards.

The first gameplay portion sees the player hunting with Dual Blades. The Wirebug is also explained further – it has two charges which have separate cooldowns. You can also find other Wirebugs in the wild which will enable super-jumps (but for that specific point). Each weapon also has a unique way of interacting with the Wirebug to cause more damage.

The second gameplay portion features the Longsword though you can also see the player using two Palamutes instead of one (since it’s a solo session). Palamutes serve as mounts but can also fight in hunts. When taken down, they’ll exit the battle temporarily to recover before jumping back in.

Monster Hunter Rise is currently slated to release on March 26th 2021 for Switch. Stay tuned for more details.

Next year will see the eighth mainline entry in the long running survival horror series, Resident Evil Village. The game will once again see you taking the first person perceptive as you find yourself in a dangerous European village filled with all kinds of creatures you’d come to expect from the series. On Sunday, September 27th, we’ll see a large scale presentation for the game at TGS 2020, but ahead of that, we got a little taste.

Capcom released a new video called Developer Insights about the game’s development. Most of it focused on how the team is taking a lot of elements from the previous title, Resident Evil 7, and expanding on them for the sequel. A lot of focus is on the main character as well, Ethan Winters, who is returning from 7, which matches up well with rumors that Ethan will have more of a personality and presence in this title. They also graced us with some nice new renders of Ethan and Christ. You can see all of this below.

Resident Evil Village will release sometime in 2021 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC. Capcom has said they plan to look into also porting the title to PS4 and Xbox One, but as of now those versions have not been officially announced.

More footage highlights all you would want from classic Monster Hunter.

Last week came quite the bombshell from Nintendo with a Direct announcing not one, but two, brand new Monster Hunter titles coming to the Switch. One was the more story-focused RPG Monster Hunter Stories 2 due out Summer 2021 with the other being the more classic looking Monster Hunter Rise. While both caught the eyes of fans, Rise especially did since it saw the return of what appears to be a more traditional Monster Hunter to the handheld space after World went to consoles. And now, we’ve got more footage to check out.

Capcom saw fit to release a new online trailer for the game during TGS 2020, which you can see below. The first part is reused footage from the reveal trailer, with new footage kicking in at about 1:40. Most of it is more highlighting of the wirebug feature that allows you to swing as well as the new Palamute companion. Check it out below.

Monster Hunter Rise will release on Nintendo Switch on March 26th, 2021. The game is also said to be running on Capcom’s latest RE Engine, which you can read more about through here.

The first mobile title in the RPG series will leave Japan.

Yesterday was a big day for fans of the NieR series as we finally got a release date for the upcoming remake of the first game in the series, NieR Replicant. Many fans are probably not even familiar with the game since the franchise exploded with NeiR Automata, which only had small references to that first title. But if you can’t get enough of NieR, you’ll have more to look forward to as well since the first mobile game in the series will also be coming westward.

As announced by Square Enix at TGS 2020, NeiR Re[in]carnation will see an English release. The game was thought to be an infinite runner game, but was revealed to have actual combat as well, which you can check out through here. A pre-registration was announced, but it is only for Japan right now.

It’s unclear if Re[in]carnation will launch at the same time worldwide, but either way, there’s no date set for anywhere. In the meantime, NeiR Automata is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC with NeiR Replicant coming April 23rd to the same platforms.

The fighting game gets its first next gen version announcement.

Last year we once again got the clanking of swords (and other various weapons) with the return of the Samurai Shodown series. The fighting game franchise was one of many that was dormant from SNK, and this new entry saw it come back in a big way, including some out there guest stars as well as some guest spots of its own in other fighting titles. Now, it’s going next gen.

As announced at the Tokyo Game Show this year, the game would be coming to Microsoft’s next generation consoles. Alongside the announcement came a very brief trailer to give you an idea of what it’ll look like using its Japanese name, Samurai Spirits. Check it out below.

Samurai Showdown is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC and Stadia. No date was given for the upcoming Series X and Series S version, only that it will release sometime this winter.
