Be prepared to feel like a proper force of nature with these games.

Games have an incredible ability of letting us step into the shoes of characters who are, in a nutshell, way cooler than we’re ever going to be. Through the use of their mechanics, these games have us doing things that feel incredibly empowering to pull off, and that remains true no matter how frequently you do them throughout the length of the experience. This is a feature dedicated to games that are able to do just that.

GHOST OF TSUSHIMA

What if we got a Batman game set in feudal Japan? Ghost of Tsushima would literally be it. The entire point of Sucker Punch’s samurai epic is to give players a vast and versatile toolset to use in both stealth and combat, which you then use throughout the game to strike fear in into the hearts of your enemies. No matter how many times you clear out a camp with lethal precision, it just never loses its luster.

Some titles could use a change in perspective.

The first-person perspective has always proven popular for video games. Such is its popularity that several third-person franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption have even opted to include it as an option in their latest titles. But what about a third-person perspective for certain titles that lack it? How would the action change? Let’s take a look at 13 such titles where this could potentially work.

Cyberpunk 2077

This one seems the most obvious for a number of different reasons. First, it’s a perspective that CD Projekt RED is well-versed in, though it would require major changes to combat given how it differs from The Witcher 3. Second, it provides a deeper connection to one’s personal V since you can actually see all the cosmetic choices made. Third, if features like wall-running and sticking to walls with Mantis Blades ever get added back in, they’d work pretty well in third-person (like the original design was intended to be). It’d be a lot of work but may probably feel better to play at the end of the day.

Even if they weren't needed, we're still glad these games exist.

Throughout video game history, there have been some series where you wonder why the sequels never end. However, there are others which seemingly shouldn’t get sequels either because of lack of sales, development troubles or because they don’t need it. Then they get sequels anyway and they’re pretty darn good, sometimes even better than the original. Let’s take a look at 15 such sequels here, though beware of spoilers.

Titanfall 2

For as brilliant as its multiplayer was at launch, Titanfall had some major issues with balance, content and post-launch support. The throwaway “story” didn’t help either and despite a positive critical reception, player numbers dropped off, leaving doubts as to whether Respawn would revisit the franchise. But not only did Titanfall 2 happen – even with how disagreeable some of the multiplayer changes were – it had an incredible campaign that stands as one of the best in the genre. Sadly, its sales and player count dipped even quicker and the series is more or less AWOL.

A slew of games to help out the current pandemic.

It’s been a rough couple of weeks, if not months, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many are stuck at home, either through layoffs or self quarantine working remotely from home. While for some it’s little comfort, there are a lot of free and cheap games right now to at least keep you entertained. And now you can both do that and help out with the efforts to combat the virus.

It was announced via 2K’s official Twitter account that they will team with Humble Bundle for what they’re calling the Game Together bundle. It will include three tiers. For just a $1 you can get Spec Ops: The Line, Sid Meier’s Pirates!, The Darkness 2 and Carnival Games VR. If you donate more than the average you’ll also get BioShock: The Collection, Civilization III: Complete, The Golf Club 2019 and NBA 2K Playgrounds 2. If you go all the way and donate at least $20 (or more than that), you get all of that and WWE 2K20, NBA 2K20, XCOM: Enemy Unknown Complete Edition, Borderlands: Game of the Year Enhanced and Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.

However much you spend, it will go to support the International Medical Corps, which is one of the leading organizations working with the World Health Organisation to combat COVID-19. And you get a pretty good batch of games to help fill the time.

Not everything goes the way you'd think, especially when betrayal is lurking around the corner.

There are some situations where it doesn’t pay to be too trusting and that holds doubly so for many video games. Everything could be peachy but the end scenario – or at least events leading up to and/or including the end – will see you betrayed. Let’s take a look at some of those scenarios here.

SOMA

Frictional’s SOMA is a compelling adventure, one that’s seemingly mimicking Amnesia: The Dark Descent but soon evolves into its own sci-fi moral dilemma. Protagonist Simon isn’t the same as the one who started the game – instead, he’s a robot copy and the Earth is more or less finished. His mission throughout is to transfer the consciousness of both him and Catherine, another robot copy, to the ARK which will launch into space. Unfortunately, there’s a coin-flip of sorts involved and their consciousness aren’t transferred, leaving them trapped on Earth. This leaves Simon angry, thinking that Catherine betrayed him, and that causes the OmniTool to malfunction. Simon is thus less left alone with no one else around.

Some games are built on happiness and relaxation but some of the most compelling thrive on strife.

Have you ever sat down with a video game to be emotionally drained? Do you want to see characters endure terrible circumstances, being beaten down time and time again to possibly emerge victorious (or die horribly)? That’s good because plenty of games exist to put you through the wringer. Let’s take a look at 16 of them here. Warning: Spoilers abound for all the listed games.

Dead Space

I’m a fan of Isaac Clarke, not because he’s a big scary man who pummels Necromorphs into submission but because he relies on surgical precision and outright will to get things done. In Dead Space 1, Isaac didn’t just have to deal with a ship teeming with space zombies, most of his colleagues dying or enormous monsters (to say nothing of that one Necromorph that just wouldn’t die). He also had the Marker messing with his mind, creating hallucinations of Nicole that would haunt him into the sequel.

Jackie's quest for carnage and violence is available for free till March 28th.

The Humble Store is offering another free game and this time, it’s The Darkness 2. From Warframe developer Digital Extremes, The Darkness 2 continues the story of Jackie and the seething entity within him. Head to this link and simply add the game to your cart to obtain a Steam key. You’ll have to link your Steam account to your Humble account to avail of it though. Hurry up because the offer is valid till March 28th.

The overall carnage and shooting mechanics, along with four player co-op support in the campaign, are pretty compelling reasons to jump in. Jackie still has some pretty awesome powers that tear enemies apart (and devour the remains) so if you want to waste a few hours feeling like an overpowered monster, it’s worth a look.

The Humble Monthly Bundle for April is also looking pretty good with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Mafia 3 with its Sign of the Times DLC unlocked immediately if you subscribe. It’s for $12 and more games will be added later.

Do you feel in charge? With some of these games, you're definitely not.

There are many games which make no bones about empowering the player and providing the tools for near-endless miracles. However, sometimes games like to go the opposite way. They like to take power away from the player or make them feel helpless. Though it may only be particular sequences and scenes, here are 15 times video games rendered the player completely helpless.

Oracle “Dies” – Batman: Arkham City

So technically Barbara Gordon aka Oracle didn’t die – it was actually Scarecrow’s Fear Toxin fooling Batman into thinking such. However, the Dark Knight didn’t know this at the time. To him, Barbara inhaled a ton of Fear Toxin and shot herself to avoid whatever monstrosity she saw Batman as. To Rocksteady’s credit, even if we didn’t notice the gas present on Batman’s side, we would’ve sworn that this was the end of Oracle.

Some game endings just left us wanting more but didn't deliver.

Ever played a game with a great story that looked like it would continue into the future but just didn’t? We’ve all been there, wondering when our favourite game would get a sequel. Sadly, some games tease and end up never seeing a continuation. Let’s take a look at 15 such titles.

Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.

Half Life 2: Episode 2

We might as well get the big one out of the way. Half-Life 2: Episode 2 saw the resistance creating a rocket that ultimately closed the Combine portal, thus limiting the aliens from calling reinforcements. As Gordon and Alyx are setting out for the Borealis, two Advisors suddenly arrive and kill Eli Vance. Though our heroes are ultimately saved by D0g, the episode ends with a cliff-hanger. All these years and some artwork teasing the Borealis but still no Episode 3, forget Half-Life 3.

Check out this interview with Sheldon Carter and Seth Olshfski about Johnny Powell and Vendettas in The Darkness II.

The Darkness II is the sequel to the hit 2007 title, The Darkness, and brings a unique new combat mechanic throughQuad-Wielding, which allows players to slash, grab and throw objects and enemies with two Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons. The game is layered with thematic elements of dark versus light, steeped in deep and twisted storytelling, and drenched in stylistic violence which is brought to life through the hand-painted graphic noir art style, true to its comic book origins.
