With this feature, we will be taking a look at some of the games that take the aspect of revenge and use it as a fuel to charge their narratives to a higher emotional degree.

It’s said that revenge is a dish that’s best served cold; and these games embody the spirit of revenge to the fullest. Each game on this list takes the raw emotion of vengeance and transforms it into powerful storytelling that stays with you long after the credits roll. Whether it’s a betrayed warrior seeking justice or a fallen hero fighting fr redemption or a survivor turned predator, these games show the best and worst parts of revenge. To that end, here are 15 of the best revenge fueled games that hit harder than you probably remember.

Tekken 8

The Tekken saga has always been drenched in betrayal that helps it stand outfrom the rest of the crowd, but Tekken 8 pushes that intensity higher than ever. That increase in intensity can be felt across each punch, kick, and slam as these hulking behemoths fight each other to the death. The generational curse of the Mishima family continues, and we find Jin at an interesting crossroads – continuing down the dark path of revenge much like Heihachi or Kayuza, or try to become a better man and break free from the cycle of violence. The fights here carry emotional weight beyond the tournament stage, and that makes this journey a lot more compelling to complete than prior entries in the series.

These diamonds-in-the-rough didn't get anywhere near the recognition they deserved.

The PS3 might be regarded by many as the dark horse of the PlayStation console family, but by the end of its lifecycle, the console had managed to accumulate an impressive library of excellent games nonetheless. Of course, a byproduct of that is that its library also had a fair few games that ended up flying under the radar for a great many players, even if they were deserving of far greater attention and recognition. Here, we’re going to talk about a few such PS3 titles that didn’t grab the masses the way they should have.

ENSLAVED: ODYSSEY TO THE WEST

Ever the masters of narrative-driven single-player experiences, back in 2010, Ninja Theory delivered Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, a game that many consider one of the studio’s best works ever to this day. Sadly, the game ended up a commercial failure. Though acclaimed by many for its storytelling, characters, performances, and its take on the classic Chinese tale of Journey to the West, for whatever reason, it failed to attract a sizeable audience.

There are plenty of great first person shooters that hold up surprisingly well after more than a decade, and this feature will list down 15 such examples.

The medium of video games is particularly susceptible to aging, with rapid technological advances often making many titles feel obsolete in just a few years. While elements like visuals and scope can quickly become outdated, certain aspects such as design and mechanics can help games maintain their appeal over time. These qualities allow some games to remain enjoyable long after their release. In this feature, we will be taking a look at 15 first-person shooters that still hold up 15 years later.

Black

Criterion Games might be best known for its work on the Need for Speed series, but its 2006 release Black also deserves a fair amount of appreciation. Despite being a far cry from what the developer was used to, Black was a compelling first-person shooter with some of the best visuals of its time. The story might not be something to write home about, but a solid set of shooting mechanics and thrilling firefights make Black a noteworthy game nevertheless – and it holds surprisingly well to this date.

Regarded by many as a golden era of single player games, the period between 2000 to 2009 harbours an immeasurable catalogue of classics.

In a time when single player campaigns weren’t shaped or undermined by their online counterparts, the games released from 2000 to 2009 exhibited innovativeness in terms of gameplay and story (and sometimes both), with the fifteen featured here all standing the test of time.

Grand Theft Auto IV

With the hype surrounding GTA VI plus GTA: The Trilogy’s semi-recent release, GTA IV’s foray through Liberty City’s grimy suburbs has become an outcast. Granted, most of you have completed Niko Bellic’s rise through LC’s criminal underworld already but take a moment to remember it’s surprisingly emotional story, of Bellic desperately outrunning his past in pursuit of a better life for him and his family. If you’ll allow us to describe it as such, its arguably the most relatable narrative in GTA’s canon.

Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick seems to have confirmed that a remaster of the 2007 shooter is also in the works.

Nightdive Studios has endeared itself to a sizeable audience over the years with its knack of developing excellent remasters of classic shooters, but in 2023 in particular, the studio has been on an absolute roll. So far this year, Nightdive has delivered a remake of System Shock and a remaster of Quake 2, while remasters of Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion and Star Wars: Dark Forces have also been announced. Though it seems there’s yet more in the works beyond that.

Nightdive Studios also seems to be working on a remaster of The Darkness, the acclaimed 2007 first person shooter that was developed by Starbreeze Studios and published by 2K. The same was seemingly confirmed by Nightdive’s CEO, Stephen Kick, who responded to a Twitter post asking for a remaster of The Darkness with a message that simply said, “It’s on the list.”

Of course, that’s not exactly an official announcement, so it remains to be seen how far along the remaster is at this point or how long it’ll be before it releases- but fans of the original can, at the very least rest assured with the knowledge that a remaster is indeed coming in the not-too-distant future.

These games are going to give you the ultimate power fantasy as you effortlessly make your way through hordes of enemies.

Games are a form of escape from the many mundanities of normal life; it’s a medium that thrives on providing a sense of escapism to the players. And what better way to provide that escape than indulging in a power fantasy – one that allows you to let loose and wreak havoc upon your adversaries with little effort? To that end, here are 15 games that give you boss-like superpowers:

Prototype

Radical Entertainment’s Prototype might be the most obvious candidate for such a list, and with good reason. The game sees players assuming the role of Alex Mercer, who has been inflicted with a deadly virus that has given him a plethora of superpowers ranging from the ability to consume and disguise anyone to jumping across buildings and gliding through cityscapes and many more. Using these powers, you can make short work of almost anything and everything that comes in your way – and it feels really empowering to say the least.

Terrorizing others can be a hell of a lot of fun.

It’s always fun when games flip the scrip in unexpected ways, which, given their more interactive nature than any other entertainment medium, they do quite often. One method that games have adopted frequently over the years is letting you play as the monster, so that terrorizing your prey or unleashing your unique abilities becomes the focus of the experience. Games have let players do that in a variety of ways, and here, we’re going to talk about a few of them.

PREDATOR: HUNTING GROUNDS

Illfonic’s asymmetrical multiplayer title Predator: Hunting Grounds was a flawed game in more ways than one, but for fans of the property, there was some fun to be had in getting to play as a Predator. With multiple different Predator types to play as and unique abilities to make use of with each of them, the game certainly had some interesting mechanics up its sleeve- even though not all of them were as well executed as they should have been.

With great power comes great responsibility...and lots of fun times. Here are 15 games with powers that were simply amazing.

While a good story, challenging combat, complex puzzles and detailed worlds can make for fun times in video games, sometimes you want to feel all-powerful. Some games cater well to that power fantasy, giving you incredible powers to wipe the floor with the opposition, thus providing the ultimate catharsis. Let’s take a look at 15 single-player titles with the best powers.

Control

The morphing Service Weapon may be her claim to the Director position in The Oldest House but it’s Jesse’s psychokinetic powers that make her a force to reckon with. Along with launching objects – and bodies – into enemies, she’s capable of using nearby rubble to create a shield, temporarily Seize a foe’s mind, and even Levitate. Further powers were added in subsequent updates, like Shield Rush for conjuring a shield of rubble and then charging into enemies with it.

There is no shortage of games that use the first-person perspective, but some are arguably more popular than others - and here 15 games that you probably haven't played before.

The first-person shooter genre is one of the most popular in the medium, and there’s been no shortage of games that use the perspective to tell different stories, evoke different emotions, and so much more. On that note, here are 15 of the best first-person single-player games that you probably haven’t played before.

Firewatch

This Campo Santo-developed first-person adventure was released in 2016 and sees players taking the role of a man named Henry who is a fire lookout at a national forest. The game has some great art direction which is also minimalist, alongside quality voice-acting. Firewatch does not have much in the name of action, but the beauty of nature and its environments remains constant throughout. Players will also have to choose dialogues from an options tree, which can significantly impact your relationship with other characters.

They may not have had their due but these shooters still rock.

Shooters are a dime a dozen especially in this battle royale-dominated era. Things weren’t too different back in the day but there were quite a few underrated titles that fell by the wayside, whether in sales or critical reception. Even worse are the games which had both but have been seemingly forgotten in the years since their release. Let’s take a look back at 15 of the most underrated first person shooters that you probably didn’t play.

No One Lives Forever

Zany 1960s spy aesthetic, hilariously clever writing, unique mission objectives and an endearing protagonist. What more could you want? No One Lives Forever was also releasing in a post-Half-Life era where stronger story-telling was valued in first person shooters. Alas, its success wasn’t to be. Despite rave reviews from critics, NOLF would release in November 2000 and only sell 36,501 copies by the end of the year. Even worse is the fact that current-generation players can’t experience it due to muddled IP rights. Nevertheless, whatever the future may hold, Cate Archer will forever be in our hearts.
