Head to head comparison between PS4 Pro and Xbox One X versions of Skyrim.

Yet another year and yet another version of Skyrim. At this point, it’s frankly getting ridiculous as to how many times Bethesda will port Skyrim to a new platform. The game was recently ported to the Nintendo Switch and now it had made its way to the Xbox One X through a 4K patch. Unfortunately, other than the resolution boost there isn’t a lot of PC level improvements in the Xbox One X version.

Last year the Skyrim was also patched for the PS4 Pro and it ran at native 4K resolution. The story is largely similar with the Xbox One X version. Besides the native 4K resolution, the Xbox One X version benefits from improved shadow quality, draw distances, increased foliage density and high resolution textures with better texture filtering. Performance remains stable at 30fps. All of these improvements are already present on the PS4 Pro so there is absolutely nothing to choose between the two versions.

It’s a shame because the Xbox One X could have been supported with a 1080p/60fps option. There is certainly enough power there to deliver that performance benchmark. Overall, it seems that Bethesda wanted to do some quick work with the Xbox One X patch by improving the resolution and adding some visual parameters here and there.

This is why we believe that both Sony and Microsoft should help and possibly invest money into these third party patches. This move will go a long way in ensuring that their respective iterative consoles are being used to their full potential.

The Xbox One X launches in just a few hours, and it seems like Bethesda will be hopping on board by updating its entire catalog of games for Microsoft’s new super powerful console. They have confirmed a bevy of updates for their entire catalog of games to enhance them for the Xbox One X, and it seems like Bethesda fans on Xbox One will appreciate what Bethesda offers here.

The games that will be updated include Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, The Evil Within 2, Dishonored 2, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, The Elder Scrolls Online, The Elder Scrolls Skyrim: Special Edition, and Fallout 4. The updates are described below.

That said, Bethesda has made it clear that it is not committing to any release date for any of these updates (except for Elder Scrolls Online, which gets an update tomorrow). They may be a ways out- and judging by Bethesda’s historical delays in getting PS4 Pro enhancement patches out, there is a possibility that we will be waiting for a while for these to hit, too.

The Elder Scrolls spoke of their return...

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one of the most popular games of all time, having sold well over 30 million copies worldwide. It is also available on just about every platform at this point, having been released on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC.

However, if you somehow have not actually played the game yet- if you are one of the few people in the world who have an interest in video games and yet never looked into Skyrim– then the good news is, you have a very good excuse to check it out this weekend. The Elder Scrolls Skyrim: Special Edition, the extensive remaster for the game released last year for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, will be available to play for free on the latter two platforms.

That’s not all, either- the game is also available for half price on both systems ($20 on Steam, $30 on Xbox), so if you decide you like it, you can go ahead and actually buy it to keep playing it. All your progress and achievements will carry over into the final game, as well. Skyrim is one of the greatest games ever made, so treat this as a sign from the universe to start playing it if you haven’t already.

Not paid mods, they say...

Bethesda has announced the Creation Club, which will be bringing paid user content to The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4. This will be paid for content that will be made by Bethesda, and certified outside creators, adding new content and systems to the games in question. However, Bethesda is insisting that this will not be a repeat of the paid mods initiative it tried once before with disastrous results.

“Mods will remain a free and open system where anyone can create and share what they’d like. Also, we won’t allow any existing mods to be retrofitted into Creation Club, it must all be original content,” Bethesda explained. “Most of the Creation Club content is created internally, some with external partners who have worked on our games, and some by external Creators. All the content is approved, curated, and taken through the full internal dev cycle; including localization, polishing, and testing. This also guarantees that all content works together. We’ve looked at many ways to do “paid mods”, and the problems outweigh the benefits. We’ve encountered many of those issues before. But, there’s a constant demand from our fans to add more official high quality content to our games, and while we are able to create a lot of it, we think many in our community have the talent to work directly with us and create some amazing new things.”

So, it sounds like Bethesda is treating this more as outsourced DLC for their games? It will be interesting to see how the community takes to it this time around, that is for sure.

Some last leaks.

Today is the day that we finally get all the official information that we have been missing so far on the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s incredibly exciting upcoming system has everyone intrigued, and this is Nintendo’s chance to sell everyone on it once and for all. But that said, it looks like known Nintendo insider Emily Rogers couldn’t resist getting one last bunch of leaks and predictions in for the event.

Speaking on Twitter, she reiterated that Mario Kart for the Switch is going to be a port of Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U, but with 16 new tracks, new characters, and of course, the addition of the Battle Mode. This alone will make it the best Mario Kart game we have had to date.

Speaking of Wii U ports, Rogers also admitted that one of the games she had thought was a Wii U port is in fact going to be an altogether brand new game. She didn’t say which one, but common sense dictates that it will either be Splatoon or Super Mario Maker (although the latter may not even be coming to the system, now that I think about it).

Rogers also weighed in on Skyrim for Switch- while she does think it is coming, she personally does not think that it will be a day one game. That said, she also concedes that it could happen anyway- she just personally does not think that it will.

The Nintendo Switch event is going to be held later today. It will debut the system’s specs, lineup, pricing, and release date.

New patch released for PS4 and PC.

Since Skyrim Special Edition launched, the developers of the game have been pretty good about making sure the game is as good as it can possibly be. The devs released patch 1.3 back in December for the Xbox One but now the patch brings plenty of fixes to the PS4 and PC.

This patch brings some general stability fixes for the game and it also is really laid out as something that is going to help 144hz monitors when talking about the PC version. In addition to the bug fixes for 144hz displays, there are general stability and performance improvements.

There are some other fixes as well, as well as one that seems like it would truly be annoying if you were having this problem. According to the patch notes, the other issues which were addressed were an issue where Slow Time effects weren’t behaving properly and an issue with being unable to log into Bethesda.net.

Patch Notes:

General stability and performance improvements

Fixed an issue where Slow Time effects weren’t behaving properly

Better support for 144hz displays (PC)

Fixed issue with being unable to log into Bethesda.net

Skyrim‘s remaster is one of the big success stories of this console generation, which is amazing- it just goes to show you that a great game is a great game, no matter its age. Anyway, given its popularity, the persistent post launch support it has been getting from Bethesda in the form of patches and updates should not be surprising to anyone.

The newest update for the open world RPG, patch 1.3, was made available on PCs a while back. On PCs, it fixed a lot of bugs and, most notably, fixed support for 144Hz monitors. On consoles, the update fixes a lot of general performance issues and bugs the game has.

You can check out the full patch notes for update 1.3 below. Skyrim: Special Edition is available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC, with a version for the Nintendo Switch also possibly in the works.

General stability and performance improvements.

Fixed an issue where slow time effects weren’t behaving properly.

Better support for 144hz displays [PC].

Fixed issue with being unable to log into Bethesda.net

Bethesda’s post launch support for Skyrim Special Edition continues to be marvellous. Another update for the game is now available (on PC only, because the update is technically still in beta), and it continues to fix the game’s general stability and performance, while also addressing several issues that PC players had with the PC build of the game.

For instance, Skyrim‘s remaster didn’t necessarily have the best support for 144Hz screens. It looks like this update changes that, though exactly what it does and how it changes that is something that remains to be seen.

You can check out the full patch notes for the update below. Remember, right now the update is only available on PC, and in beta- presumably it will be made available to everyone at large in the coming weeks. Skyrim‘s remaster is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch version presumed to be in the works for the launch of that system.

New Mario Kart game due out within three months.

Laura Dale of Let’s Play Video Games has been among the most consistent reliable and accurate sources of Switch news and rumors so far- just about everything that she has said has turned out to be true. So when she decides to chime in on the news and speculation that has been floating around about the launch lineup for the Nintendo Switch, we decide to sit up and take notice.

Dale has confirmed that Zelda will indeed be delayed, for Wii U and the Switch- in spite of the fact that the game will not now launch until months into the Switch’s life, by which point the Wii U will be well and truly dead, Nintendo still does intend to release the Wii U version. The Switch, according to Dale, will be launching with the new 3D Mario game that Nintendo showed off briefly during the Switch reveal video, which she confirms will be a return to the Mario 64 style of gameplay, with a massive open hub world, and multiple objectives per level.

The Switch will also be launching with The Elder Scrolls Skyrim: Special Edition, the remastered version of the game. The Switch version of the game will be getting mod support added to it post launch, a bit like the PS4 version of the game- and the extent of mods supported on the Switch will also be similar to the PS4 version of the game.

Dale also confirmed that the Switch will come bundled with a new Splatoon game- more single player content will be added to the game this time around, and the 1v1 mode will get more attention bestowed on it too. The Switch version of the game will also be supported with free content post launch, similar to Splatoon‘s excellent support on the Wii U.

But we’re not done yet- according to Emily Rogers, who is one of the most well known Nintendo insiders there is, Nintendo are also working on getting Mario Kart out for Switch within three months of its release. The Switch Mario Kart game will be a reworked Mario Kart 8, and feature ons of exclusive content including brand new tracks, new playable characters, and a new-and-improved battle mode- the latter of those being especially exciting, because the battle mode was the one area where Mario Kart 8, an otherwise excellent game, faltered.
