And there won't be periodic new sets of gear for grinding's sake.

ArenaNet, developers of the hit MMO Guild Wars 2, faced some flak recently for the announcement of Ascended Gear for the Lost Shores event. This made quite a few fans angry, and they made sure to complain about it on the developer’s forums. The main point of contention? That this a case of the MMO becoming a grind-heavy experience favouring the one with the best gear.

Studio Design Director Chris Whiteside disagreed. “Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from Exotic up to Legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.” He also stated that the gear would “be made available through all sorts of content around the world including existing content” through Player versus Enemy and World versus World combat.

The tiers themselves are interesting, as Legendary provides the same stats as Exotic gear but different appearances, while Ascended gear provides real upgrades.

Looking to lure even more players, ArenaNet is starting a free trial for the game this week.

While ArenaNet introduced The Lost Shores event for Guild Wars 2 in the wake of their interrupted Halloween event, it seems the world-changing three-day escapade won’t be the only thing gamers have to look forward to. If you haven’t already joined the bandwagon, then you can try out Guild Wars 2 from November 15th to 18th for free. That’s the full game, four days, no charge.

Of course, there’s always a catch. You need a friend who already has a copy of the game to invite you. And for those interested in getting their friends involved, they must have an account that’s been created before November 6th. You can also only refer a friend up to three times in this trial period.

If you’ve already tried inviting a friend and haven’t found anything different, then relax because the feature has just gone active today. So if you’ve ever wanted to try the critically and commercially acclaimed RPG for yourself, then now’s your chance.

ArenaNet promises to change Tyria forever in this next event.

ArenaNet might’ve soured gamers after the Shadow of the Mad King event, held as an occurrence for Halloween, for Guild Wars 2 was interrupted due to Hurricane Sandy, and gamers didn’t receive the extension they asked for. First world problems, we know.

However, the lack of an extension was just to make sure that their next event – a “one time occurrence” dubbed The Lost Shores – started on time. And ArenaNet is promising that the world of Guild Wars 2 won’t be the same after this event, which takes place in the Sea of Sorrows area.

Other than that, there’s not a lot of information available. The Lost Shores event will take place on November 15th and players can expect a content update before it’s release.

What kind of cataclysms await? Will a burning crusade make it’s way through? Perhaps a king of liches waiting to be faced? Or a panda-filled mist? Hopefully none of those things, for one of the most successful MMOs currently available.
