The list of 38 Steam Deck Verified games so far also includes the likes of Hollow Knight, Psychonauts 2, Scarlet Nexus, and several more.

Back in October, Valve confirmed it had started the process of going through the entire library of game available on Steam and getting them ready for the Steam Deck. This would see games being given one of three tags- Verified, which are games that are fully optimized for the Steam Deck; Playable, which are games that will run on the device but not might be completely optimized; and Unsupported, which are games that don’t currently run on the handheld.

The first batch of games in those three categories has now been revealed (courtesy of SteamDB), and there are some interesting names in each list. The list of Unsupported games is a pretty short one with just 5 games, though it does have one notable name- Persona 4 Golden. The game’s own page says that Valve is still working on adding support though, so hopefully this won’t be permanent.

24 games so far have the Playable tag. The list includes the likes of The Witcher 3, Slay the Spire, Inscryption, Subnautica, Valheim, Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, NieR: Automata, Bravely Default 2, and more. That means that right now, these games are playable on the Steam Deck, but might still run into a few issues here and there.

Finally, there’s the first batch of Steam Deck Verified games, which lists 38 titles right now and is already looking impressive. Games that have already been fully optimized for the upcoming handheld device include the likes of Portal 2, Celeste, Hollow Knight, Dishonored, Cuphead 2, Psychonauts 2, Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Death’s Door, Death Stranding, Mad Max, Scarlet Nexus, Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Hot Wheels Unleashed, the upcoming Total War: Warhammer 3, and many others.

You can check out the full list of the Steam Deck’s Verified, Playable, and Unsupported games so far below.

The Steam Deck is scheduled to launch in February.

Samurais that cut down foes with swift and deadly strikes, ninjas that strike at their enemies from the darkness and disappear into the night- there’s just something about these two very different kinds of warriors that attracts both storytellers and audiences in large numbers, and video games, like any other entertainment medium, are not immune to those charms. Over the years, dozens upon dozens of excellent games have done some memorable stuff with samurais and ninjas, and that’s seen even more of an uptick in recent years. And now that it’s been some time since we spoke about our favourite games with samurais or ninjas in then, here, we’re going to speak about a few more.

GHOST OF TSUSHIMA

Let’s start with the most obvious choice, because obviously, there was no way Ghost of Tsushima was not going be to in the list. Living the samurai power fantasy in a vast, richly created, beautiful open world that is brimming with striking vistas- Ghost of Tsushima accomplishes is defined by all of this, and so much more. Just as deserving of praise is the combat, which serves up the perfect samurai experience- and as you play more and Jin keeps moving further and further away from the code of honour he’s been bound by his entire life, those gameplay mechanics begin changing as well, allowing for much more brutal, deadly, efficient, and silent ways of dispatching enemies.

From light-hearted jokes to red-hot jabs to everything in between, these are some of the best ways games have made fun of us for dying.

Dying is part of playing games (and real life), and while it can be a frustrating gameplay experience at times, it’s fun when the games make it fun. There are several ways to do that, of course, but the most obvious one is to alleviate the tension with a joke or a stray, casual, lighthearted jab. We don’t see something like that all too often in games, but when we do, it stands out. Here, we’re going to talk about a few games that do just that, and do it rather well.

BATMAN: ARKHAM SERIES

Gotham’s villains have been trying to kill the Batman for as long as he has been around, and the Arkham series has some fun with the moments where, for whatever reason, you do send the Caped Crusader to an early grave. Whatever villain it is that you’re going up against will show up on a black screen, look down at your corpse, and hurl insults at you. Some, like the Joker’s are funny in a twisted sort of way, while others, like Killer Croc’s, just seem a little excessive. Either way, it’s a cool spin on the classic “game over” screen.

Microsoft has announced some new titles for Xbox Game Pass this month, each coming under the ID@Xbox. These include Night Call, which is available today and sees a cab driver in Paris fighting to solve a mystery. Though it released for PC last year, this will be the adventure title’s debut on Xbox One.

Other big names include Observation from No Code, better known for Stories Untold. It takes place in a space station where the crew has gone missing. Only Dr. Emma Fisher remains to solve the mystery but that’s not your role. You play as S.A.M., the station’s AI, and must help Emma (while also figuring out what’s going on internally). Observation will be available tomorrow for Xbox One and PC subscribers of Xbox Game Pass.

Then there’s Sabotage Studio’s retro homage The Messenger which is coming to Xbox One tomorrow. It stars a ninja trying to save his world from demons and jumps back and forth between 8-bit and 16-bit gameplay. Streets of Rogue might also be worth checking out as an immersive sim/rogue-lite RPG with free-roaming AI that will react dynamically to your decisions.

The retro-inspired RPG serves as a prequel to the 2018 platformer.

Canadian indie team Sabotage Studio made an incredible mark in 2018 with its debut title The Messenger, a retro-inspired action-platformer with dashes of metroidvania design peppered in, and amazing music and off-the-rails humour to beat. The studio has now announced its second outing after some recent teasing– Sea of Stars, a turn-based RPG that is, in their words, “inspired by the classics” and will serve as a prequel to The Messenger.

Taking the form of Kickstarter project, the game is promising “the Sabotage touch in every system.” On its Kickstarter page, Sabotage promises that Sea of Stars will “modernize the classic RPG in various ways, including combat, exploration, narrative, and interacting with the environment, “while still offering a hearty slice of nostalgia and good old, simple fun.”

Combat promises to be dynamic, with timed hits, combos, strategic options, and what have you, while there are also supposedly no random encounters or grinding. Traversal has similarly been described as “unshackled,” and will include everything from vaulting and jumping to swimming and climbing. There’s also talk of a rich narrative and “full-on dynamic lighting.” You can get more details through the link above.

An announcement trailer for the game was also revealed to give a taste of the game’s visual style, music, setting, and mechanics. Take a look below.

Sea of Stars is scheduled to release in 2022 (the Kickstarter page mentions March 2022 as the estimated delivery date), which means it’s still a ways off. It’ll be out on PC and “consoles”, and given its launch timing, we can at least expect it to be cross-gen, if not entirely next-gen exclusive. Stay tuned for more updates.

Teaser trailer features a solar eclipse and hints at a pirate theme.

Sabotage Studio made its mark in a big way with The Messenger in August 2018. After following it up with updates and the free Picnic Panic DLC, the developer is prepared to announce its next title. A recent teaser indicates the latter will be revealed on March 19th which happens to be the Spring Equinox for the year.

The teaser doesn’t really indicate much, save for a solar eclipse present throughout the trailer. The music and the studio’s logo in the corner seems to have a slight pirate theme so there’s that. It’ll be interesting to see if this is another retro 2D platformer.

The Messenger gained attention for its take on Ninja Gaiden-style retro action, which alternated between 8-bit and 16-bit styles. That’s not even accounting for the story, which offered all kinds of time traveling shenanigans. Stay tuned for more details on the studio’s next title in the coming month.

The old school throwback on your PC.

A new week is here, and it’s time for more free games if you’re gaming on PC. Or well, this week we’re back to one free game (which seems to be what Epic Games is going back to), but it is quite something in the form of an old school throwback, The Messenger.

The Messenger is a 2D platformer that pays homage to classic side scrollers like Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi. While that may not be all a unique thing nowadays, The Messenger is a great title which features tons of action, skills and hidden paths. In it you play a young ninja who must deliver an important scroll as he fights through a demon army, and things aren’t as they seem. The game also got a major update for free that you’ll be able to download as well.

The Messenger is available for free on the Epic Games Store until November 21st. After that is Bad North: Jotunn Edition, a RTS and Rogue-lite hybrid where you must defend your island from invading Vikings.

Next week's free game is The Messenger, a Ninja Gaiden-inspired platformer.

It’s a new week for freebies on the Epic Games Store. Costume Quest and SOMA are gone and Nuclear Throne, a top-down roguelike shooter from Vlambeer is in. Reikon Games’ Ruiner, another top-down shooter but set in a cyberpunk city, is also free.

Enter the Gungeon and The Binding of Isaac fans will probably like Nuclear Throne. You battle through a post-nuclear series of levels, battling other mutants and gathering weapons – along with taking on perks through mutations – to eventually claim the titular Nuclear Throne. It’s tough but fairly addicting.

Ruiner might be more interesting due to its neo-noir aesthetic and extensive gritty violence. It’s not a roguelike but there are a series of weapons, upgrades and some strong melee combat features to keep you hooked. Both games will be available November 14th. The next free title will be Sabotage Studio’s The Messenger, a retro platformer that’s inspired by Ninja Gaiden.

Includes three new levels and bosses, along with new enemies.

Sabotage Studio’s tough-as-nails, humorous retro title The Messenger has received some free DLC with Picnic Panic. Available now for PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch, it takes the protagonist to Voodkin Island on a summer escape. Of course, Barma’thazël is up to no good, collecting creatures for some nefarious purpose so it’s your job to stop him.

Featuring some vehicle sections like a high speed raft on the ocean and new bosses including a giant Kraken, Picnic Panic has quite a lot in store for fans. Three new levels and bosses await along with a bunch of new enemies. There are also more challenge rooms to solve and artifacts to collect.

The Messenger has already received some new features lately, particularly the endless New Game Plus mode. This allows players to start a new playthrough nigh unto infinity, even as enemies get tougher and tougher. What’s next for the title though? We’ll find out in the coming months hopefully.

Retro-style platforming and time-traveling showcased in new gameplay trailer.

After it was recently rated by PEGI for PS4, Sabotage Studio’s The Messenger has been officially announced for the platform. It’s out on March 19th, and a new trailer showcases its action platforming elements along with the time-traveling mechanic. Check it out below.

The story is simple enough – a young ninja’s village is attacked by the Demon King. The ninja receives a scroll from the “Western Hero” and tasked with delivering it, and becomes the Messenger. He subsequently embarks on a journey to deliver the scroll to the top of the mountain, while battling the Demon King and his minions along the way.

Taking influences from the Ninja Gaiden series on NES, The Messenger offers two time periods – the first spans the 8-bit era of action platforming, while the second is an homage to the 16-bit era. Along with the time-traveling, the tight controls and difficulty are also a good reason to check it out. The Messenger is currently available for PC and Nintendo Switch.
