The PlayStation Camera gets its own mini-game collection.

[HTML1]
At its latest presser, Sony revealed a ton of announcements for the PlayStation 4, ranging from games to services, not to mention the new PlayStation Vita 2000 model. The PlayRoom was also unveiled in a new trailer, which helps to show off how the PS4 and the PlayStation camera for different augmented reality games. Check it out above.

The PlayRoom comes pre-installed with every console and is essentially a collection of mini-games. Interestingly, Double Fine Productions – which you’ll know as the developer of Psychonauts and Broken Age – has revealed that they will be creating downloadable content for the game. What that entails remains to be seen.

The PlayStation 4 will be releasing in North America on November 15th and in Europe on November 29th, which will mark the day that PlayRoom launches across the world. Will the games look as amazing as they do in the above trailer, and will it match up to the remaining launch line-up? We’ll come to know in November.

Greatness awaits. Camera sold separately.

The Playroom looks like Sony’s version of Wii Sports or AR Games- a fun proof of concept tech demo to help families get familiar to their brand new purchase. Questions about whether it will be as much fun as Wii Sports notwithstanding, Sony announced today that the software will come bundled (pre-installed) on all PlayStation 4 systems. What you can see above is your first proper look at the software and what it entails.

Of course, there is one thing immediately stands out to me- the thing requires the PlayStation Camera to function, and the PlayStation Camera is no longer included with PlayStation 4 (reportedly in an attempt to reach the $400 price), making the Playroom either the most misguided attempt to get users to buy a peripheral that should have been a pack in in the first place, or the most singularly remarkably useless pack in game of all time. Or both.

Decision was made on basis of "giving gamers choice" according to SCE's Fergal Gara.

Even though it’s already been discussed that Sony made the PlayStation Eye camera a separate purchase in order to stick to the $399 price point, this wasn’t done in order to compete with the Xbox One.

Speaking to TechRadar, VP & Managing Director at SCE UK and Ireland Fergal Gara denied removing the camera for competition’s sake because “we couldn’t possibly have known what the Xbox was going to cost.”

Gara did explain what went into the decision however. “What I’ll say is, lots of ideas were considered you know, lots of different combinations and of course price was I think fairly clear from a very long time out but you know everything about PS4 is about giving gamers choice.

“So if you don’t want a camera you don’t have to have a camera. If you want to trade in games, you can trade in games. So there’s been nothing in the whole proposition that is overly restrictive and I think the reaction has proved that people value that.”

Each PS4 comes bundled with The PlayRoom for free though, with the PS Eye being a separate $60 purchase. Regardless of whether consumers go for it or not, the incentive is definitely there.

Augmented Reality tech-demo included in every PlayStation 4

The Playroom was a working title augmented reality tech demo that showcased how the new PlayStation Eye and the Dualshock 4 controller work together to create a virtual/augmented reality experience for consumers. The software also includes multiplayer augmented reality games that players can enjoy just for kicks on their couch.

Sony has confirmed that every PlayStation 4 will be included with this neat tech demo. However, it’s worthwhile noting that the camera is not included with the PlayStation 4 purchase. The camera can be bought separately for $59.99.

I personally was able to get hands-on with The Playroom at E3, and I really liked it. I am glad that this tech demo will be included with every PlayStation 4 because I think its something that everyone should be able to experience for the first time when they purchase the PlayStation Eye camera to see what it can do.

Let us know what you think of The Playroom in the comments below.
