Ready for some tearjerkers?

We all love a story that ends with the protagonist riding off into the sunset, but sadly, that can’t always be the case. Some of the best games, in fact, end in devastating fashion, with either their protagonist, their entire cast of characters, or even their entire world significantly worse off than they had been in the beginning. And as hard as it is to experience these endings on that first playthrough, there’s no denying that those that are executed well do end up making quite a big impact. Here, we’re going to talk about a few such sad video game endings we totally didn’t deserve.

NOTE: There are spoilers ahead for every game in this feature.

RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2

Red Dead Redemption’s ending was already a shocking one, but its sequel somehow ended up topping it. Serving as a prequel and featuring a character that had never been mentioned in RDR1 as its protagonist, Red Dead 2 was obviously always going to go poorly for its main characters, but the way Rockstar pulled it off somehow managed to leave us stunned nonetheless. Arthur Morgan is built up throughout the whole game as an amazing character – probably one of the greatest video game characters of all time – so seeing him meet his cruel, untimely demise is a hard pill to swallow. Yes, technically, that isn’t the ending, and you do spent a healthy chunk of time playing as John Marston in the lengthy epilogue- but we all know how that ends as well, and it ain’t pretty.

Skybound Games has announced a release date for The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series, a collection of all content in the franchise till date. It’s out on September 10th for Xbox One, PS4, and PC for $49.99. Along with all four main seasons, the collection will include The Walking Dead: Michonne mini-series and the DLC 400 Days.

There will also be a number of digital bonuses, over 10 hours of developer commentary, and behind-the-scenes features like concept art and character art. A “Return of The Walking Dead” documentary short will also be included, along with a music player for listening to more than 140 tracks. If that wasn’t enough, players can also enable the “graphic black” setting for all episodes to give it a look more in vein of the Walking Dead graphic novels.

Creative director Kent Mudle said, “Graphic black is a loving tribute to the source material and a powerful art style that makes the game look like a living comic book. An idea the team formulated and perfected with The Final Season, this new visual styling offers longtime fans a way to play the series again in a brand-new light while giving new audiences a smooth visual ride across all seasons.”

With over 23 episodes and more than 50 hours of gameplay, The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series is a great way to experience the long and tragic story of Clementine. From playing as Lee Everett to controlling Clementine and growing up with her, players will make choices that define her fate.
All four seasons, plus The Walking Dead: Michonne, and a lot of bonus content, will be compiled in a single package.

Skybound Games recently wrapped up Clementine’s story arc after picking up Telltale’s The Walking Dead series following the studio’s closure, but clearly they’re not done with that world yet. Though they have plans for more games in the future (preliminary ones, at the very least), before they get to that, they’re going to take a look back at what’s come before one final time.

They’ve announced The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series, due out this September for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC (where it will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store, just as the final two episodes of The Final Season were). The collection will include all four seasons of the game, and the three episodes-long side-series, The Walking Dead: Michonne. All seasons will be boosted by graphical enhancements, while there will also be a total of 10 hours of developer commentary, not to mention a behind-the-scenes documentary short.

The collection is coming in the form of three editions, though the priciest one has already been sold out- there were only 100 of the Signature Pack, which was price at $349.99, included the game itself, an Ericson School for Troubled Youth t-shirt, a Disco Broccoli plush, Clementine & Lee enamel pins, a Kenny hat, Clementine nesting dolls, a 10” Clementine & Lee Diorama, an 18”x24” art print, and another art print signed by members of the development team, voice actors, and Robert Kirkman (creator of The Walking Dead). All of this was included in a signature stamped box.

So what’s left, then? There’re two more editions you can purchase (which aren’t available in a limited capacity, so there’s no rush). The Guardian Pack (available for $249.99) includes everything mentioned above other than the signature stamp box and the signed art print, while the Protector Pack (priced at $99.99) is one step down, without the diorama and the 18”x24” art print.

You can make your purchases at the Skybound store through here. Meanwhile, make sure you give our review for The Walking Dead: The Final Season a read.

In keeping with the glut of great game announcements for the Nintendo Switch over the last few days, Telltale has now finally confirmed that all the legacy Walking Dead games will be coming to Nintendo’s Switch this year, too (Season 4, the final season, was already confirmed for Switch, and the first episode has launched simultaneously on the platform with all the other versions).

The Walking Dead: Season 1 launches on the Switch next week, with all five episodes, plus 400 Days included for a price of $25 (they use last year’s enhanced The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series Collection as a base). To be more precise, it will be available on August 29. Season 2 and the third season, A New Frontier should be available before the end of the year as well. As of right now, Michonne, the miniseries that bridged the second and third seasons, has not been confirmed.

It’s a shame that these weren’t released ahead of Season 4’s launch, but that is what it is. At least Switch owners get to play these now.

Everything you need to know about The Walking Dead: Season Two.

The Walking Dead: Season Two is part of an episodic series of video games that are developed and published by the Industry powerhouse, Telltale Games (The Walking Dead: Season One, The Wolf Among Us and Tales of Monkey Island) that is based on a comic book series by Robert Kirkman (Invincible and various Marvel Comics) that’s also titled The Walking Dead. The video games are however written by Nick Breckon. The Walking Dead: Season Two is a direct sequel to the smash hit episodic adventure, The Walking Dead.

The first episode of Season Two was released digitally in December of 2013, the 17th for North America and the 18th for Europe. While further release dates have not yet been confirmed, it is worth noting that upon the conclusion of the season, there is a planned retail release that will collect all the episodes together on a disc, this is likely due to the high sales and success of The Walking Dead: Season One’s retail release that gathered all previous episodes as well as the 400 days DLC onto one disc. The Walking Dead: Season Two is available and will be made available on Microsoft Windows, OS X, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, iOS and Ouya.

The Walking Dead: Season Two is part of a sub genre of adventure games, commonly referred to as a graphic adventure. Perhaps the most famous creators from this sub genre are Sierra (now a subsidiary of Activision) who developed the Kings Quest and Space Quest games to name but a few. But what separates graphic adventures from adventure games is the player interaction. In a game like Kings Quest (an adventure game) the player must interact with the world by using text prompts such as “look” or “go to” and “take”, this point and click style made games significantly more slow and all the more cumbersome.

Graphic adventures instead give the player control over an avatar that can interact with the world through the use of command prompts and situation specific commands (such as the defence of a character and/or escaping perilous situations, this also opens up doors into the world of creative dialogue. Now, when coupled with the improved visuals that comes with a newer generation of gaming devices and this refined control scheme, writers had the ability to create a truly thrilling experience. Whereas you would have told a character to “take object”, “run” and “use object”, you now must choose which object to take, whether to stand your ground or run away and even if you plan to act at all.

These situation specific prompts are what made The Walking Dead: Season One such a success, because players never quite knew what was coming their way and how it would play out. Needless to say, the situational prompt is something that is core to the graphic adventure genre nowadays, and without it the game would have undoubtedly been less favourably received.

For people that had played The Walking Dead: Season One, they had the option of taking their saves over to The Walking Dead: Season Two. What this means is that some of the crucial choices that you make in season one, will carry over and have serious consequence. Given the persistent nature of the game and its vast branching storyline, these consequences can result in an entirely separate story depending on the players, a gameplay mechanic that got the game high praise from various critics. The Walking Dead is played from a third person camera perspective.

Development

When Telltale games purchased the rights to The Walking Dead Comics, the contract that they signed allowed for a multi year, multi platform and multi title license. This license only came into full effect after the hugely successful release and sales of The Walking Dead: Season One. Spurred on by the success of the previous installment and the studios’ recognition as being the team that rejuvenated a near dead gaming genre and sub-genre as well as being one of the best development studios of 2012 , Telltale Games commissioned a second season of the games.

But since then, it has come to light that the writing for Season two is specifically designed and written to contrast the writing of season one. This was accomplished by a switch in player perspective, whereas players would have played as Lee in season one, they now played as a slightly older Clementine. This switch in narrative not only changed the players perspective, but also their priorities. In season one, it fell to Lee to protect the young Clementine, but now in season two it’s up to the player to decide who is trustworthy and helpful.

Given the unprecedented and massive success of the series, The Walking Dead Season One Game of the Year Edition has been listed to release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One during June of 2014. This has lead to an expected current gen port and release of Season Two upon the series completion.

Story

Given the branching nature of the game, we cannot explain with precise detail what the plot of the current season is, nor can we give details regarding upcoming episodes we must instead give a broad stroke view of the situation and what is happening.

Season Two continues the story of the young girl Clementine. She has been left orphaned by the onset of a zombie apocalypse that has left her alone and vulnerable. She must instead fend for herself and learn how to survive on her own in a world that has seemingly lost all compassion. It has been many months since the events of seasons one and Clementine is trying to find a safe haven, and along the way you will meet many returning faces, and encounter some truly gruelling decisions that must be made.

Season Two of The Walking Dead will stretch across five episodes:

Episode one – All That Remains.

Episode two – A House Divided.

Episode three – In Harms Way.

Episode four – Amid The Ruins.

Episode five – No Going Back.

Characters

Given the unfinished nature of the game, it is currently impossible to provide you with character bio’s as they have not yet been realised in a final way.

Clementine.

Michelle

Victor, Ralph and Winston

Luke

Carlos and Sarah

Rebecca and Alvin

Troy, Matthew, Walter and Johnny

Nick and Pete

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.

The new PlayStation Store update is out, and the games in the spotlight this week are… well, they’re a mixed bag.

On the one hand, we have episodes 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead: Season 2 for the PS Vita, which you can buy for the regular price, or for a discounted price if you buy the Season Pass as well. “Watch Clementine’s story unfold as she struggles for survival after the events of Season One,” says Sony’s blog update on the European PS Blog. So, yeah, that’s a good deal indeed. People would want to purchase that.

On the other hand, we have Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. Bizarre indeed. “Tons of characters spanning various arcs of the popular series are thrown into the mix, with gorgeous, colourful visuals and of course, over the top special moves and fabulous battle poses to top it all off,” says Sony. It could be worth a purchase anyway, to see just what the hell it is.

Also on offer this week is Octodad. “Being an octopus while hiding your identity as one from your family can be very tough,” the post says. Even tougher than being a father, in fact.

Any of those games interest you? Tell us in your comments!

Earlier today on Twitter, developers Telltale Games teased the second episode of the point and click adventure series, The Walking Dead: Season Two. The exact words from the Telltale Games twitter were that the game is “just around the corner”. According to an image released with the post, we can see that this latest installment will continue to feature the protagonist from previous episode, Clementine, as she wanders through the zombie-ridden world interacting with other survivors.

This upcoming episode will be the second episodic installment in The Walking Dead: Season 2, following the first episode, titled, All That Remains. The choices that gamers made in The Walking Dead: Season One, along with it’s DLC 400 Days will reportedly have an effect on the way that events unfold in The Walking Dead: Season 2.

The series has garnered quite a bit of attention for it’s intense and addictive style of game play, as well as its overall unique launch strategy. With a new episode being released every month or so, gamers get a chance to beat what’s out there and not have to wait a long time for a follow up, with the end result being longer than your average game.
