CD Projekt has revealed that it is in the process of looking into potentially licensing out its IP to smaller studios for mobile games.

CD Projekt—the company known for The Witcher games as well as Cyberpunk 2077—has said that it might be open to licensing its IP for mobile games. As caught by VGC, the company was asked during a Q&A session during its earnings conference for FY2023 whether it would be open to licensing its big IP—The Witcher and Cyberpunk—to third parties for mobile games.

Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski responded that the company was looking at the possibility of licensing the aforementioned IP to external studios. While there are no announcements being made, CD Projekt is looking into whether it would make sense for such a licensing deal to be a one-off deal or if there would be a longer-term partnership.

“The answer is pretty simple here,” said Nowakowski. “The answer is yes, we are considering such a move. In fact, we were pursuing, through conversations, opportunities like that. We have nothing to announce just yet, but when the time comes, we would.”

“As for a one-off or other business model related to any such potential partnership, we would not comment on the specifics here, to be honest, plus there is nothing in place that we’re talking about,” he continued. “But there’s no predesigned business model we’re looking at in this case, whether one-off or shared profits. That’s another story. But when the time comes we’ll definitely share information.”

It is worth noting that, while both The Witcher and Cyberpunk as video game franchises exist thanks to CD Projekt’s efforts, both of the franchises are themselves licensed works—The Witcher from a series of fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, and Cyberpunk from the tabletop RPG of the same name.

We’ve also seen a mobile game based on The Witcher 3‘s in-game card game, Gwent, which also got a single-player spinoff in Thronebreaker. Cyberpunk 2077, on the other hand, hasn’t seen any spin-offs developed for it so far.

Microsoft has announced its slate of titles coming to Xbox Game Pass subscribers in June. Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky has already been confirmed and will also support cross-platform play. We also know that The Bard’s Tale ARPG: Remastered and Resnarkled will be available on June 18th for consoles and PC.

Tomorrow though, the entire back-catalog of Kingdom Hearts will be available for Xbox One players. These are packaged into Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 and 2.5 ReMix along with Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue. If you’ve ever wanted the complete Kingdom Hearts experience on the console after finishing Kingdom Hearts 3, this is the way to go.

PC players can look forward to Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2, Battletech and Dungeon of the Endless (also coming to Xbox One) tomorrow. CD Projekt RED’s Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, a role-playing game focused on GWENT, will join the service on June 18th. Overall, it’s a pretty solid line-up for both console and PC players to enjoy.

Several games will also be leaving Xbox Game Pass on June 15th. These include:

Book of Demons (PC)

CD Projekt RED’s Gwent-based The Witcher spinoff Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales may not enjoy the immense popularity and fan following that the mainline series does, but as those who’ve played it would tell you, it’s a surprisingly good game that bears a lot of the hallmarks that make The Witcher’s main games so good- a great story, solid characters, excellent writing, and meaningful player choices, all of it in the context of engaging card-based battles.

Having launched on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2018, the game is now going to be available to even wider audiences. That’s because with very little fanfare, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is out now for the Nintendo Switch (something that CDPR said wouldn’t happen a couple years ago). It costs $19.99 (which is great value for its 30 hour campaign), and weighs 4.3 GB.

As good as Thronebreaker is, it sadly hasn’t had much success on the market, which has prompted CD Projekt RED to declare that they won’t be making any sequels for the game. Here’s hoping the Switch release brings about a boost in sales.

The RPG/card game hybrid won't see a sequel, unfortunately.

CD Projekt RED have seen unprecedented success with their adaptation of The Witcher series. It really took off with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which spawned a card game spin-off. But it hasn’t all been huge successes, unfortunately, as one of the most underrated entries in the franchise, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, won’t be getting a continuation.

In a Q&A session in a video (which you can view below), community manager Pawel Burza gave a pretty firm no when it was asked if we would see a follow up to The Witcher Tales. It’s not a huge surprise, since the game was said to underperform shortly after it launched, and with Cyberpunk 2077 becoming another key franchise for the company, it will probably mean less time for spin-offs in general.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales was a pretty great game that combined the strong narrative of the main Witcher series with the card game mechanics of GWENT. It was a solid game, so it’s worth checking out even if a sequel won’t be on the horizon.

Maybe it will be a port of Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales.

CD Projekt RED has made it clear that it does not have any projects in the works for Nintendo’s Switch. However, it seems like the Switch’s extraordinary success may have forced them to change their mind, because we have, yet again, an indication that they are working on a Switch game.

YouTuber Doctre81 has stumbled upon a job listing for GOG Galaxy, which CD Projekt owns, for a software engineer. This listing specifies platforms that the developer would be working across, and names Steam, GOG, PS4, Xbox One—so far so good—and Nintendo Switch.

It presumably is not The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which struggles even on stronger consoles, and it almost certainly will not be Cyberpunk 2077. I would suggest that it may be a Switch port of Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales and Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, although who knows. CD Projekt may surprise by putting the older Witcher games on the platform or something.

Even if Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t launch on the Switch, Switch owners have their own cyberpunk action game to look forward to coming this year—Astral Chain, by Platinum Games.

They also admit that the game’s initial GOG exclusivity might not have gone as planned.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, a single player collectible card role playing game based on the popular Gwent minigame from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, recently launched on PC. It was available exclusively via GOG at first, though less than a month later, it ended up launching on Steam too.

The reason for this was that the game ended up underperforming relative to CD Projekt’s expectations. Early feedback, and the general popularity of Gwent, had led them to believe it would do well, but it seems to have underperformed relative to their expectations. CD Projekt is at least candid in admitting that making the game exclusive to GOG may have had something to do with that.

“The game appealed to the community, which drove up our expectations regarding sales,” said CD Projekt’s joint-CEO Adam Kiciński in a financial call with investors. “Unfortunately, as yet, these expectations have not been fulfilled. Still, we remain optimistic… We expect to continue to sell Thronebreaker for many years to come, even though the initial period may not have lived up to our initial expectations.

“The game appeared on GOG first for fairly straightforward reasons. GOG is our priority platform and we wanted to release the game there first to gamers who support us there. However, the reach of GOG is incomparably smaller than that of Steam. We know that there’s a large Witcher fan community on Steam and that’s why we also released the game there.”

Hopefully, the game does end up doing well in the long run, because by all accounts, it’s a well made game that fans of the Witcher universe will greatly enjoy, as will fans of card RPGs. Maybe the upcoming console release will help as well.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is out now on PC, and launches on PS4 and Xbox One on December 4.

A period of GOG exclusivity for a staggering 17 days, look at that.

CD Projekt RED’s Gwent RPG, which is based on the popular collectible card mini game within The Witcher 3, is out now on PC. However, it has been available exclusively via GOG, which is CD Projekt’s own online storefront, so far. That will change now, because Thronebreaker is, as of right now, available on Steam as well.

The game is available only on Windows, but that’s really the only consideration you need to have for now. Otherwise, it seems to be the exact same thing you can get on GOG, and for the exact same price of $30. It supports Steam Cloud, controller input, as well as Steam Achievements, too, if you’re into any of that stuff, which I know a lot of Steam players are.

In any case, now I imagine more PC players will look into playing this game, because a significant crowd does exist on PC that will not play a game unless it’s on Steam. A release for Thronebreaker on Xbox One and PS4 is also scheduled for the end of this year.

No Gwent on the go for you, Switch owners.

While CD Projekt RED has previously stated it doesn’t intend on supporting the Switch, choosing to focus instead on high end consoles and PC, you would think that stance would change with Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. Unlike The Witcher 3 or the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, this game doesn’t look to be on the cutting edge, technically speaking. In fact, it’s a highly stylized card RPG, and it would be a great fit for the Switch’s hybrid nature.

The initial release is announced for PS4, Xbox One, and PC—but what about a Switch launch? Could it be happening later, maybe? Eurogamer decided to reach out to CD Projekt RED and flat out ask them if a Switch launch was planned, and the answer was not very encouraging at all.

“There are no plans to release Thronebreaker on any other platforms than PC (GOG.COM), PlayStation 4 and Xbox One,” CD Projekt RED said. When prompted further to elaborate on why that might be so, they didn’t oblige.

So here we are, then—while The Elder Scrolls: Legends is due to come to Switch, players of Gwent will have to look to other platforms if they want to partake. Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC this year (tomorrow for PC, December 4 for the consoles).

Dance with dragons, manage an army, and fight off Nilfgaard in the narrative card battler.

CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 is a ways off, but it’s next big release is just next week with Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. Reviews have already started coming in for the “collectible card battler meets Witcher-esque narrative”, and they’re fairly positive. So if you’re thinking of investing in a new age of Gwent, then perhaps some new gameplay footage will help you decide.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, as the title denotes, is set the world of The Witcher. Players will visit different locations, meet intriguing characters ,and have an army to manage. Don’t get too confused though – the essence of Thronebreaker is still very much about Gwent. You’ll collect cards, build a deck, and engage different foes as Meve, a war-hardened queen fighting off an invasion from Nilfgaard.

How the narrative changes with one’s choices remains to be seen, but if it’s anything like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we should be in for a treat. Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is available on October 23rd exclusively for PC via GOG. PS4 and Xbox One players will get it on December 4th.

As we can see, this game has better combat than The Witcher 3.

CD Projekt RED’s Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, the upcoming single player RPG that replaces battles with games of Gwent (which means it will have better combat than The Witcher 3), just got a new video showcasing 24 minutes of gameplay footage today, courtesy of Entertainium.

The video shows us what the game is like in motion— an isometric RPG, somewhat in the vein of classic 2.5D cRPGs, with a cartoony art style. This should, of course, instantly make it accessible to more people than the M rated Witcher 3 could have reached, and also go along far better with Gwent’s art style (which is a more stylized representation of characters and events in the main games and stories).

This is also the first time in a while that we’ve gotten a big budget single player card RPG — most modern ones seem to be mostly concerned with multiplayer — so that’s another crowd that is bound to love the game when it launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 23.
