Following its Switch launch in July, the free-to-start Pokemon MOBA title is coming to mobile devices in a little over a month.

In addition to providing major new details on upcoming releases such as Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, at the recent Pokemon Presents broadcast, The Pokemon Company also shared some new details on the recently launched free-to-start MOBA title Pokemon Unite.

Having launched for the Switch last month, Pokemon Unite is also due out for mobile devices, and now we know exactly when that’s happening. The game is coming to Android and iOS devices on September 22, and pre-registrations are open now on the Play Store and App Store respectively.

Meanwhile, anyone who tries out Pokemon Unite on the Switch before August 31 will also get the in-game Unite License for Zeraora. This can also be used on the game’s mobile versions by linking accounts.

In our review of Pokemon Unite, we awarded it a score of 7/10 and said, “Pokemon Unite makes enough stumbles that it’s not a total home run; however, the core concept is sound and engaging, and given proper long term support, Unite could evolve into being a fixture of the genre.” You can read our full review through here.

TiMi Studio Group has now opened a new studio in Montreal, tasked with building a new AAA game with open-world and live-service elements.

TiMi Studio Group has recently opened a new studio in Montreal. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the Montreal studio is the third location of the Studio Group in North America. TiMi Studio Group is owned by the Shenzen-based giant, Tencent.

TiMi Studio is behind many popular mobile games such as Call of Duty: Mobile, Honor of Kings, and Pokemon Unite. The Montreal studio is reportedly working on a new AAA title, which will include live-service and open-world elements. The new studio will be working in tandem with TiMi Seattle, which is also a very recently opened studio

Given the amount of popularity games like Call of Duty: Mobile have garnered in regions such as Asia, it’s no surprise that the studio would require more manpower than ever to support these games and work on new projects. TiMi Studio’ Pokemon Unite is available to pre-load on the Nintendo Switch, and will be releasing on both Android and iOS platforms later this year as well.

Everything you should know about Pokemon's debut in the MOBA space, launching imminently for the Switch.

Not long from now, we’re going to get to play two major mainline Pokemon games in quick succession when Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and Pokemon Legends: Arceus launch in the space of around two months. Before that happens though, Pokemon still has some more stuff on offer, and soon, will be delivering Pokemon Unite. And as its launch approaches, here, we’re going to talk about the most crucial details you should know about the game.

WHAT EVEN IS IT?

Pokemon might be a role playing series, first and foremost, but over the years, with countless spinoffs, it’s tried its hand at various other genres, from fighting games to dungeon crawlers to turn-based strategy RPGs and more. With Pokemon Unite, it’s branching out once again, which is a free to start MOBA. Expect real-time strategy-lite battles, and with the game being a free to start battle, also be prepared for significant monetization.

MATCHES

So here’s the big question- how exactly are matches going to be structured in Pokemon Unite? Each match will see two teams of five players each going up against each other, and each team’s goal is to score more points than the other before the match’s time runs out. You score points by moving to one of several control points scattered throughout the map, and will level up and become more powerful as the match progresses.

MOVES AND ITEMS

Before the beginning of each match, you will select which Pokemon you want to play as, on the basis of their unique attributes and what moves they can potentially learn. Interestingly enough, you’ll also be selecting the moves that your Pokemon can potentially learn, as well as the items they can hold during battles, and both those things will, as you can imagine, have a significant impact on how you strategize- so make those decisions wisely.

WILD POKEMON

Since this is, of course, a PvP game, it goes without saying that opposing players will pose the biggest threat to you- but they won’t be the only threat. Also found in abundance across the map in each match are wild Pokemon, which you’ll fight and defeat to level up, grow more powerful, and learn new moves. Interestingly enough, the game also has legendary wild Pokemon, which promises to throw an interesting wrench into how matches progress.

AEOS

So, we know about how matches in Pokemon Unite are structured, and we know about wild Pokemon in the game- put together, that tells us exactly how to win a match. Each time you defeat an enemy Pokemon – be it wild or otherwise – they drop Aeos, and it is by taking this energy into opponents’ goal zones that you score points. Clearly, then, working with teammates to try and break past enemy defences and putting up your own defences around goal zones is going to be key in Pokemon Unite.

EVOLUTIONS

Of course, evolutions are a crucial part of any Pokemon experience, and they will have a role to play in Pokemon Unite as well. Though you will start each match with a low level unevolved Pokemon, battling against opponents and wild Pokemon will help your own Pokemon become more powerful, which means that the Pokemon you begin a match with can evolve as well. Evolutions are temporary, but will make you much more formidable on the battlefield, so use them wisely.

TYPES

Another hallmark of the Pokemon franchise is types and type matchups, and the rock-paper-scizzors style strengths and weaknesses that different Pokemon and move types pose to each other can often be a crucial part of any fight’s strategy. Sadly, that’s not going to be the case in Pokemon Unite, with it having been confirmed that there are no type-based strengths and weaknesses in the game.

UNITE MOVES

Each Pokemon will also come equipped with a Unite move- which, as you may have figured out, is essentially an ultimate. Unite moves will vary across the roster of Pokemon available, with each having different strengths and advantages, such as being able to deal large amounts of area and effect damage in your immediate vicinity. Unite moves will, of course, be limited, so you can’t just go spamming them.

ROSTER

Speaking of the roster, exactly how many playable Pokemon are going to be available in Pokemon Unite? Well, it ain’t gonna be the full National Dex, that’s for sure. So far, nearly twenty Pokemon have been confirmed to be in the game at launch, including the likes of Charizard, Pikachu, Snorlax, Garchomp, Lucario, Cramorant, Gengar, Alolan Ninetails, Greninja, Mr. Mime, Venusaur, Absol, Talonflame, Cinderace, and many more.

POKEMON CLASSES

Pokemon in the game’s roster are also divided into five different categories, each with their own unique strengths and weakness. The Attackers like Pikachu and Greninja have low endurance but can deal heavy ranged damage. Defenders such as Snorlax and Slowbro are experts at taking the hits and protecting other Pokemon in their teams. Speedsters like Talonflame and Gengar have high mobility and offense. Support Pokemon such as Mr. Mime and Wigglytuff can heal allies and inflict status conditions on opponents. Finally, there are the All-Rounders like Charizard and Machamp, who, as the name suggests, have balanced endurance and offense stats.

REWARDS AND HOLOWEAR

Of course, it wouldn’t be much of a multiplayer game (especially a free to play one) if it also didn’t reward you with stuff for playing more and making progress, from unlocking new Pokemon to new cosmetic wear your for trainer, to even cosmetics known as Holowear for your Pokemon. From a fancy suit for Mr. Mime to a pirate’ outfit for Cinderace, there seems to be some interesting stuff on offer here that should interest players. Of course, there will be paid microtransactions as well- you can spend Aeos gems to unlock special items, and Aeos gems, in turn, can be purchased with real money in the game’s shop.

CROSS-PLAY

Pokemon Unite is going to launch on mobile devices as well as the Nintendo Switch, and being a multiplayer game, thankfully, it’s also going to support full cross-play. It’s been confirmed that regardless of which platform you’re playing on, you’ll be able to play Pokemon Unite with and against players on all other platforms.

LAUNCH

So when exactly is Pokemon Unite coming out? It’s going to be a staggered launch, with Switch players getting the game first. On the Switch, it’s out on July 21, which is followed by a launch for iOS and Android devices some time in September. An exact release date hasn’t been confirmed for the mobile versions, but it’s safe to assume that we’ll find out soon enough.

The classic side scrolling series is aiming to blow things up this year

Ah, Metal Slug, now there is a name I imagine many have not heard for a good while. The series was once a prolific one and has seen a multitude of different releases and re-releases over the years, but has since been dormant for quite some time now. But it looks like it’s planned for a grand return, and one that is very soon.

As reported by Inven, SNK CEO Jeon Se-hwan announced that new games in the franchise was planned. One of those were for consoles and aimed at the older crowd who are probably more familiar with the franchise, and a mobile title aimed more at younger audiences that will be developed by Tencent’s Timi Studio and is described as a ‘card-type sidescrolling game.’ This lines up with statements near the end of last year that the franchise was being considered for a revival. The surprising thing is that it seems the company is looking to release both of these titles this year, with the mobile title apparently over 80% done.

SNK’s Samurai Shodown revival seemed to be quite the success last year, so hopefully they can strike again with Metal Slug. While it’s a far different genre than Shodown, I would say it’s equally beloved by its fans.

The iconic map will be on the go soon.

Between ongoing content updates to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, its battle royale counterpart, Call of Duty: Warzone, and the campaign release of Modern Warfare 2 Remastered, there’s more Call of Duty ongoing at one time than ever before. That’s why it can be easy to forgot there is another title ongoing in the franchise that’s also getting frequent updates: Call of Duty Mobile. The title has taken the popular shooter on the go, and now it’ll get one of the most iconic maps, too.

In a post from the official Twitter post, there’s a bit of snarky hint that the Rust map will come to Mobile, most likely as part of its next season. Rust was originally released in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and has been remade for later games in the series. It’s a small map with a huge structure in the middle, leading to a lot of frantic and fast-paced action.

Call of Duty Mobile is available now to all compatible iOS and Android devices.

Only Pokemon surpassed it.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was a game that showed just how big the franchise still is, and that title is still getting updated on a regular basis. But it’s not the only Call of Duty game going strong, as you can take the series in your pocket with Call of Duty Mobile. It’s also gone on to show the strength of the IP.

Call of Duty Mobile has seen consistent downloads and revenue since its launch. It’s added lots of content and quality of life support, such as official controller support returning. According to Sensor Tower, the game was the second most downloaded game of 2019. For its launch quarter alone it managed to amass 180 million downloads. The only thing that actually surpassed it was the ongoing Pokemon GO mobile title, though Call of Duty Mobile did outsell it in the last quarter of 2019.

Call of Duty Mobile is available now for all compatiable iOS and Android devices.

The mobile COD is still going strong.

Call of Duty is a beast. There’s really no other way to say it about a franchise that has stayed so dominant and at the top for nearly 15 years now. Now the series is on mobile devices, which will finally let you play with controllers again, and it’s showing there’s just no stopping this train anytime soon.

As reported via Sensor Tower, the second month for Call of Duty: Mobile may not have had quite the highs of the first month, but it’s still quite good. The free to play app has now been downloaded a staggering 172 million times. On top of the downloads, in November it pulled in $31 million in revenue and added to the first month’s roughly $54 million, which puts it at just under the $87 million mark. The US is still the biggest market accounting for 42% of revenue, with Japan a distant second with 11%.

Call of Duty: Mobile is now available to download on all compatible iOS and Android devices.

Controller support finally returns.

Call of Duty fans have it pretty good right now. Not only is the annual mainline game in the series out and now finding its legs in Modern Warfare, the mobile version of Call of Duty is ongoing as well. The game has already been a pretty major success and now it’ll have one extra thing fans have been wanting back for awhile.

When the game first launched, it did have controller support, but an early patch took it out. Well, Activision has been teasing its return for a good while and now it’s back. Both the iOS and Android versions of the game have their controller support back for those who want it. You will need to enable Bluetooth on your phone and controller support within the game, and you’ll be ready to go. Those who use controllers will only be matched up with other players using controllers.

Call of Duty Mobile is available now to all compatible mobile devices.

It's outperformed the launches of PUBG Mobile and Fortnite significantly.

It’s not surprising that Activision’s free-to-play mobile release of Call of Duty: Mobile has been performing exceptionally (it was downloaded over 100 million times in its first week alone), but even so, a new report from Sensor Tower paints an impressive picture of its successful launch month.

Call of Duty: Mobile has had the second biggest launch month ever, trailing Pokemon GO and surpassing Mario Kart Tour. It’s been downloaded over 148 million times. The United States led the way with a 16 per cent share of that, with 23.6 million downloads, while India was the country with the second highest downloads for the game, with 16.2 million downloads (11 per cent of the total).

In terms of revenue, the game grossed a total of $53.9 million, with $3.1 million being the highest figure it raked in in a single day. 16 per cent of the revenue came from the United States (22.8 million), while 4 per cent ($7 million) came from Japan. The playerbase is spit roughly equally across iOS and Android, but the former is responsible for about 60 per cent of the revenue.

Interestingly enough, Call of Duty: Mobile has also thoroughly outperformed its direct competitors at launch, with more than four times as many downloads as Fortnite and and over twice as many as PUBG Mobile, as well as twice as month launch month revenue as Fortnite and significantly higher than PUBG Mobile’s $3.5 million during launch.

The much requested feature is coming back.

Call of Duty can be in your pocket now with Call of Duty Mobile, the mobile title that captures the COD experience. It’s been a hit, but there’s something that’s been missing for some players in support for traditional controllers. The game actually launched with this feature, but the game was patched because of balancing fears for those that are forced to used the default touch controls. Now, though, it seems it’s coming again.

On the official Reddit, it was announced that controller support would be coming back “soon.” Unfortunately, no time frame was given for when that would be, but the much requested feature at least is coming back at some point in time.

Call of Duty Mobile is available for all compatible iOS and Android mobile devices. Controller support isn’t the only thing coming, either, as the game will be getting its own dedicated zombie mode, which you can read all about through here.
