Soulslike games are dime a dozen these days, and while some have garnered great critical and commercial acclaim - these are the games that you probably heaven't heard of before.

The Soulslike genre is one of the more recent ones that we’ve seen gaining traction in the last few years. There have been a ton of great games that take the basic framework established by FromSoftware’s premier Souls series, and put their own spin on this formula to sometimes, great effect. Here are 13 such games that you’ve probably never heard of:

ENDER LILIES: QUIETUS OF THE KNIGHTS

Adglobe’s ENDER LILIES: QUIETUS OF THE KNIGHTS is an incredibly chill game that uses its Soulslike mechanics to great effect. The game’s narrative also has a fair bit of charm to it as you uncover the myriad mysteries of a once glorious kingdom. The game has some great boss designs and is one game worth experiencing for fans of the genre.

A cavalcade of awesome free games will be available next month for subscribers.

Twitch Prime’s latest slate of free games for subscribers in May has been revealed and it includes Psychonauts, Gone Home and Titan Souls. If you sign up for Twitch Prime (or even Amazon Prime), you’ll receive access to these releases along with ClusterTruck, High Hell and I, Hope.

Psychonauts is Double Fine’s classic mind-bending platformer that will be receiving a sequel sometime in the near future. Fullbright’s Gone Home is a first person narrative adventure with thriller elements while Titan Souls is a boss rush title where the player only has one arrow.

Other benefits for Prime members include no ads while watching Twitch and in-game loot. The service itself costs $10.99 per month and $99 per year but on May 11th, it will be raised to $119 per year. Now isn’t the worst time to sign up, especially given the free games provided with Twitch Prime in previous months like Tales From the Borderlands and Tokyo 42. These games are still available for those who sign up today.

Is it really that easy? Yes. Yes it is.

Being a boss isn’t easy, especially in video games. Along with incompetent minions and plucky heroes who want you dead, you might have to deal with other problems like potentially dying in just one hit. Which video game bosses suffer from such a curse? Let’s take a look at 15 of them below.

Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.

Bosses – Titan Souls

This one’s pretty obvious but only because the concept of Titan Souls is such. Basically, every boss – yes, every boss – dies in one hit. The catch is that you only have one arrow in these fights (oh, and the player dies in one hit as well). The overall challenge is in figuring out where to hit said Titan in order to kill it.

One arrow, one life and one giant foe to kill.

Devolver Digital’s Titan Souls finally has a release date – it will be out on April 14th for the PS4, PS Vita and PC in North America while Europe receives it on April 15th. This was revealed by the publisher in conversation with Eurogamer.

Developed by Acid Games, Titan Souls’ is an old-school, overhead hack and slash title that emphasizes guts and tenacity as much as exploration. It features plenty of rogue-like elements and caters to the more hardcore mindset from the beginning itself. Players only have one life in Titan Souls and you must use that to slay an enemy. You also have only one arrow so make good use of it.

Titan Souls may be old-school in its difficulty but it packs some snazzy visuals to appeal to modern players. Will you be picking it up this April? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below and stay tuned for more information.

Designer Mark Foster explains the basic premise and why Titan Souls won't be on Xbox One any time soon.

As a concept, Acid Nerve’s Titan Souls began development in December 2013 where the idea was to explore a world full of various dangers – namely from the Titans – armed with only a single arrow. The arrow is indestructible so you’re not completely helpless but you only have one health point. If you’re struck once, the game is over. To even the odds, the Titans also have a single health point but you’ll need to hit their weak spot in order to properly down them. Through various twists and turns, Titan Souls morphed into a full fledged game for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

What sets it apart from the crowd and will it take advantage of the various features between the PS4 and PS Vita? We spoke to designer Mark Foster about the same and also gathered his input on why the game is only releasing for PlayStation consoles. Titan Souls will be out in 2015 for the PS4, Vita and PC via Steam to stay tuned for more details.

"Each Titan has a weak spot which you need to discover and hit with your arrow to kill. There's no grinding down health bars or anything, the game is set on a knife's edge..."

Rashid Sayed: I am intrigued by the concept of single strike. It can either kill the player or the Titan. Can you let us know how this will work?

Mark Foster: Each Titan has a weak spot which you need to discover and hit with your arrow to kill. There’s no grinding down health bars or anything, the game is set on a knife’s edge, one tiny slip and you will die, but the Titans have that same vulnerability.

Rashid Sayed: How are you making sure that each Titan is unique and challenging at the same time? Will they have a different personality and move set?

Mark Foster: Each Titan is just entirely different, in visuals, movement, attacks, pacing and weaknesses. No fight feels the same in any way and we explore different ways of using the game’s mechanics to get the most out of them.

Rashid Sayed: I find it rather interesting that Titan Souls is not scheduled for the Xbox One. After all, Microsoft did revamp their indie policy. Is there a specific reason why Titan Souls won’t launch on the Xbox One?

Mark Foster: Microsoft’s policies still have parity clauses which mean if we release it on PS4/Vita first, we can’t bring it to their console later so it probably won’t be on Xbox.

Rashid Sayed: Are you guys planning to include cross buy and cross save for the PS Vita and PS4 versions?

Mark Foster: Yep the game will be cross buy and have cloud saving available.

Rashid Sayed: Tell us about the playable character. He will be facing intimidating enemies. How do you plan to give personality and a sense of bad assness about him?

Mark Foster: The character is simply an extension of yourself, their personality and motivations are simply your own. You find out more about the game’s story as you progress through it.

"You don't gain any extra powers, weapons or anything else during the game, you just become more skilled at playing the game so you can execute tougher challenges as you progress."

Rashid Sayed: How many Titans will the final version have?

Mark Foster: Around 20 in the full game.

Rashid Sayed: Will there be strategic way to take out these Titans or will it be a case of players accumulating powerful weapons or skills to take them out?

Mark Foster: You don’t gain any extra powers, weapons or anything else during the game, you just become more skilled at playing the game so you can execute tougher challenges as you progress.

Rashid Sayed: The game has limited set of gameplay mechanics. Is that intentional by design?

Mark Foster: Yes, restricting the elements of the game to focus on specific aspects means we can use them in different and interesting ways, whilst keeping the game’s core simple and elegant. Variation comes in the form of Titans rather than new weapons or changing central mechanics.

Rashid Sayed: The PS4 version of the game will have more content compared to the PC version. Can you let our readers what they are?

Mark Foster: The full game will be released for PS4/Vita/PC/Mac/Linux and all those versions will be the same, but the game is greatly expanded upon the original flash jam game we made for Ludum Dare back last year. The jam only had 4 titans whereas this game will have 20 and the whole thing is much more polished, balanced and fun.

Acid Nerve may never launch Titan Souls on the Xbox One due to id@Xbox's parity clause.

Acid Nerve’s Titan Souls may never launch on the Xbox One. This is due to Microsoft’s strange parity clause wherein indies need to launch their games on all platforms together or first on Xbox One. This same policy was termed as brutal last week by Krillbite Studios’ Adrian Tingstad Husby.

Now at first look you may not find anything special about Titan Souls but if you watch the 18 minute long gameplay video above, you will definitely feel intrigued by what this game has to offer. Indie games are now more relevant than ever and Microsoft is only hurting its games library by having such strange clauses.

Speaking to Acid Nerve’s Mark Foster, GamingBolt asked him whether there is any chance we may see a Xbox One version in the future. “Microsoft’s policies still have parity clauses which mean if we release it on PS4/Vita first, we can’t bring it to their console later so it probably won’t be on Xbox,” he said.

It’s worth noting that he does not confirm that it will not be released on Xbox One at all in the future but the as you can make out from his response the chances of that happening are slim. We hope that Microsoft will be revisit their policies and make it more open for indie developers and games in the future.

Titan Souls is due for the PlayStation 4, PS Vita and PC.

It's not quite Shadow of The Colossus, but it's certainly something!

Today, Devolver Digital lifted the curtain and revealed a new gameplay trailer for their upcoming PlayStation 4, PS Vita, PC, Mac, and Linux game, Titan Souls. The ambitious indie project that has been compared to Team ICO’s Shadow of The Colossus is a very pretty little game featuring fast gameplay, large enemies and an art style that does indeed resemble Team ICO’s PS2 classic.

Said to be set in a world that I can only describe as being limbo-ish, Titan Souls is a game that has been on the radar of many an indie gamer since its reveal.

The official description is, “Between our world and the world beyond lie the Titan Souls, the spiritual source and sum of all living things. Now scattered amongst the ruins and guarded by the idle titans charged with their care, a solitary hero armed with but a single arrow is once again assembling shards of the Titan Soul in a quest for truth and power.”

As vague as that is, it does make me a little curious and wanting to see more of the game. Titan Souls Will also be at PAX PRIME this week in Seattle, this will be the first time that the game will be available in a demo form and it will mark the titles first public appearance. The developers have understandably said “We are very excited! (and slightly nervous?)”

No, it's not another Souls game by From Software.

Titan Souls is an indie action game by Acid Nerve and Devolver Digital for PS4, PS Vita, and PCs running Windows, Mac, and Linux; the game, which tasks players with conquering massive titans in an alternate dimension to recover lost treasures and relics, sounds, at least from its setup, a whole lot like the Team ICO classic Shadow of the Colossus for the PlayStation 2.

Unlike that game, however, Titan Souls features simple combat that involves fighting with just the one solitary arrow that you get, finding the titans’ weaknesses, and then exploiting them; and all of this to recover the titans’ souls (see how the game gets its name now?), all in order to find the arcane secrets hidden all over the land.

The game looks intriguing, and it is due out in 2015 for PCs, PS Vita, and PlayStation 4. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage and information on the game.
